joe's father is a bible salesman and supports a very large family on his sales skills. joseph is the oldest of seven children. his other siblings are paul (19), edith (17), judith (17), mark (14), solomon (10), benjamin (5). joseph was often in charge of caring for his siblings, which he did with great care and attention.

TRIGGER FOR PARENTAL DEATH - for as long as nick can remember, he loved performing. in his younger years, he was a frequent participant in community theatre and talent shows as part of a band with either his older siblings or a group of friends. there was nothing like the adrenaline rush following a successful show, the camaraderie with cast and crew mates or friendly competition amongst other people showing off their talents, or the electricity in the air that came from connection with an audience. then the summer before nick’s freshman year of high school, his dad suddenly passed away and seemed to take his love of performing with him. to this day, nick hasn’t uttered a note in public nor has he touched an instrument and he usually serves as a crew member in the drama club.

so, how did nick end up at an arts college considering his unofficial and seemingly permanent retirement from performing? easy. the first factor came in the form of his scholarships, one for academics and the others from the various sports he participated in whilst in high school. the second factor comes from a desire for stability. one day nick will be ready for adventures and to see what the wider world has to offer, but right now, it is an incredible comfort to know that his family is nearby and ready to provide aid while he steps into proper adult life. plus, who says that one needs to attend a more traditional college in order to gain useful skills and a fulfilling education?

being a class clown and prankster comes as easily as breathing to nick. he has loved making people laugh and smile since he was young which has only grown as he has gotten older. however, this particular trait is simultaneously akin to being a suit of armor for nick. not only is he able to verbally spar with the best of them, being one of the resident comedians can obscure signs of something being wrong to untrained eyes. there are people who need the attention and aid more during their times of need, plus nick does not wish to be a reason someone he cares about is worried.

From the outside looking in, Hunter had the perfect upbringing. The perfect family, the perfect home, and the ability and support in whatever he dreamed of pursuing. From the inside though, that was the farthest from the truth. His father sets the rules, and Hunter follows them. With the threat of losing a multi-million dollar inheritance and his father's chain of businesses looming over his head constantly, there aren't many other options, leaving Hunter feeling pretty helpless. His father is a strict man, and one that doesn't mess around. So when Hunter is told to "Jump!", there's no other response besides "How high?"

This incredible amount of pressure is what lead Hunter to take certain matters into his own hands in high school. Stealing the trophy of his school's rival wrestling team the day before a big competition seemed like a good idea in the moment but almost landed him in hot water. Hunter had been told by his father to win at all costs, and what better a way to throw off the other team's focus than taking their most treasured possession? When his father found out, he was able to talk the principal out of a suspension with a nice donation to the school. His father had his own form of punishment though, sending Hunter off to military camp to straighten out his rebellious ways.

Hunter isn't sure exactly at what point things shifted at home, all he knows is that he went away to military camp during summer break of his freshman year of high school, and when he came back his parents were practically strangers inside their own home - purely putting on a front for others in public. His father isn't subtle about the many other women catching his attention these days, and Hunter has no idea why his mother is still hanging around and hasn't left yet. Maybe it's the money - or maybe she's hanging onto some delusion that he'll realise an error in his ways and change. Whatever it is, what Hunter does know is that it's left him with a great bitterness when it comes to love and relationships. Mess around, have fun, and leave in the morning before the other person wakes up. That's the motto he lives by, and it hasn't let him down so far. Some would think it's an incredibly lonely way to live, Hunter would call it safe.

Hunter's main focus now is finishing school, and doing his best to excel in his extra-curricular's with a pretty intense training regime. Maybe if he can do those things, his father will be proud and he'll finally get the love and recognition he's always hoped for.

Sebastian was born and raised in San Diego. When he was 13, his parents had told him they were getting a divorce, and Sebastian took it really hard. When his mother was transferred to France for work, his parents gave Sebastian the decision if he wanted to start high school in Paris, or stay in America with his father. It was the most difficult decision he had ever made, and he was apprehensive about the move at first, but it didn’t take long for him to grow accustomed to life in Paris. He’d fly back and forth to visit with his father every now and then, but after finishing his schooling in Europe, he made the decision to spend more time with his father back in the US. Unfortunately, he didn’t know before he made the decision that his father had relocated to Ohio, a state that was extremely low on Sebastian’s To-Visit list.

All of Kitty’s life has revolved around being perfect. Her father was an extremely successful entrepreneur, and her mother was your typical trophy wife, so Kitty was expected to be the immaculate trophy daughter. She largely took it in her stride, and her mixture of familial wealth, inherited ruthlessness, and the most devastatingly beautiful face her small town had ever seen was the perfect concoction to be mutually adored and feared throughout her adolescence.

(Sexual assault TW) When Kitty was eleven years old, she was assaulted at a sleepover by her friend’s older brother. Being generally maladapted to deal with her own emotions, as well as wrestling with a lifetime of religious shame, Kitty never breathed a word of it to anyone, choosing instead to pretend that it hadn’t happened and enacting her indirect revenge on her abuser’s sister. She tells herself that it’s fine and that she’s moved on, but the truth is that she’s never been further than a chaste makeout session, and it’s not because of the cross she wears around her neck as armour.

Despite this, Kitty has a reputation, and not one that most people would be happy with. It doesn’t bother her though, and she’s never found herself in a situation feeling pressured to engage in any activities she wasn’t enthusiastic about- not that any guy who valued his face remaining intact would ever try to pressure her. She’s never attempted actual dating; her romantic involvements have been sporadic and commitment-free, despite some genuinely trying otherwise. when spencer was young, he was considered to be his father's mini-me. one was hardly ever seen without the other, and a the young porter boy learned a lot of lessons from the older man - including a heavy amount of toxic masculinity in the process. his father viewed the world in a very specific way - one that, unfortunately, as spencer started to become more aware of who he was (specifically, his attraction to the other boys at school) - didn't quite sync up as it once had. uncoincidentally they began to grow apart when he came out at the age of twelve, as his father felt like he could no longer relate to the child he'd once been inseparable from.

though he no longer has the bond he once did with his dad, old habits die hard, and there are times where his dad's voice definitely comes through him - not in the best ways. he can be stubborn and abrasive at times, covering up the sensitive and loving parts deep down, pieces of him that were all but destroyed in the rejection from a man he'd once respected so greatly. he's open about who he is, but there's still a part of him that hasn't fully accepted it all, and fears that he'll be seen as less of a man because of his attraction, something that often results in picking on those who are brave enough to be a just a little more free with their own feelings and interests.

because of his need to prove himself, you can often find spencer in the gym or out on the field after the rest of the team has gone, putting in extra work to make sure he can not only keep up with the other men, but be better than them, desperate to not ever slip up and be caught in a singular moment of weakness, so determined to fight against the allegations of being like "all the other gays" to stop and actually question whether or not that'd be such a bad thing.

Brody grew up in Montana with his mother. His father left them for another woman when he was a young teenager. Since then he & his mom has struggled with low income and putting meals on the table - this struggle and the abandonment of his father triggered reactive anger issues within the boy. If it wasn't for his high school P.E. teacher, who was also his mother's best friend, he would have been expelled from school however he directed Brody into taking up Hockey as an outlet for his energy and also anger, as it could be a violent sport. Thanks to this Brody received a scholarship to Dalton Academy to play hockey and study Music Production.

Alongside his classes and training, Brody earns money from being a social media influencer. A clip of a hockey fight he was in the middle of had went viral and he gathered a fan base who romanticised his reactive on-ice behaviour. He's known as the bad boy of varsity ice hockey and lives up to the persona so he doesn't lose any income as he sends most of his earnings back home to Montana for his mother to live stress-free.

The only thing that calmed Brody down growing up was listening to music - he didn't have a specific taste, he listened to anything with a captivating beat or grounding lyrics. Most people think that he wants to become an artist / music producer to chase the fame that he claims to love but in reality he hopes that one day he would be able to ground someone like music did for him.

They didn't want to be math genius, instead choosing to go back to Lima and go to McKinley Arts to pursue other ventures.

Brittany is openly bisexual and nonbinary. rachel has always been an overachiever, joining club after club, spearheading group projects to the point where she just does them herself, etc. back in high school she had the excuse that it was to get into a good college. now it's simply a habit that she can't break. if her hand isn't up first in class when the teacher asks a question then something is seriously wrong.

rachel knows she's unpopular and she's very much aware of why (she can be too much for people sometimes and she's very focused on her own future, to the detriment of those around her), but it does weigh on her. she is more insecure than one might imagine and she longs to have some of the college experiences that movies have popularized.

her insecurity does not extend to her talent. she knows that she's too good for small town ohio and it kills her that she's wasting away some of her precious ingenue years, but college show choir is a real way to get attention. and it's important to have the training that a college like mckinley provides on a resume, even if one doesn't actually need it.

Jordan comes from a long line of cheerleaders who are also clumsy. It's safe to say that she's been very well acquainted with a doctor since she was very young. While she hasn't always been in a neck brace, it has been a staple of her look since college has hit. She always seems to either have it on or some form of cast on a limb. It's a wonder how she stays a part of the Cheerios or The Troubletones considering she's always hurt somehow.

Moving from Kentucky to Lima was never something that Sam had ever thought would happen until it did. With his father picking up a new job in his Sophomore year of high school that was meant to come with nice commissions, it was a no brainer that the family pack up and move; the peace of mind of the extra money was worth the moving to a small town in another state.

School has never come easy for Sam. Sometimes words blurred together and concentration was hard. Keeping focused on school was difficult at the best of times, and even harder again when the topics were boring. What was easy were sports, music and drawing. When class was a bore, Sam would whip out his notebook and doodle away. Without much thought doodles became full on comics and before he knew it, he was applying for a full scholarship to any school that had a decent Arts program.

Growing up, hoping all round the country, it didn't take Aliyah long to realize that her life was a little different from her friends. For one her mom was way younger, and she never knew who her father even was. Her mom had been a teen mom, and a musician and artist and had passed all of that down to her daughter.

Aliyah took to instruments young, picking up her first drumsticks at three and taking an interest in the bass and regular guitar by the time she was five. At ten her mother had her standing in on drums at her shows and at fifteen she was singing backing vocals and some solos with her mom.

School had never been Aliyah's strong suit, she did just well enough to not cause any problems, but it wasn't anything that would get her a scholorship to college and honestly she hadn't been interested in going to college at all. Content to live off gigs and art commissions for her paintings, it wasn't until she, like it seemed most of Vocal Adrenaline was approached and recruited by Shelby Corcoran, that she even considered it. Ultimately she decided to do it, because why the fuck not, wasn't like she was doing anything else.

Aliyah is a very laid back and unbothered person, who definitely doesn't take show choir all that seriously and thinks the rest of this town could do with a chill pill or a couple puff puff passes on the bowl with her but she does like observing drama and for some reason this random town in Ohio has no shortage of that.
