Well, I started this blog 7 years ago with great intentions, and had a great almost 7 months posting and then I started grad school and anything other than grad school sorta fell by the wayside.

In the years between then and now, I’ve thought about picking up where I left off, but haven’t really found the motivation at the right time of the year.

So I’m sort letting the daily writing prompt/daily writing tip thing go after 7 years (it’s time 😂). While I stopped posting, I did continue writing (sporadically) and now that I am done with grad school I am actually taking a creative writing class for the first time ever and I am so excited!!!

It’s only just started, but one thing that my prof said that I’ve been ruminating over and want to share with you all is that a lot of people use backstory solely to justify a character’s actions. And if used like that, then it’s really easy to fall into common tropes and make your character feel very two dimensional. Instead, backstory should give your character depth. It can (and likely will) explain some of the character’s attributes/decisions/etc, but it should also add to the character in some way.

Idk I hope I’m explaining that right and in a way that makes sense.

For me, the example that comes to mind is from the show Miraculous Ladybug (I’m not caught up yet with what’s been released on Disney+ so PLEASE NO SPOILERS), where we have two characters, one of whom is a villain and one of whom is a superhero. Character one is a rich fashion designer with a wife who mysteriously disappeared and since then has rarely left his house and still grieves her. Character two grew up isolated, lost his mother as a child and his father is very distant, he was essentially raised by his father’s personal assistant. He was homeschooled, almost completely cut off from the outside world unless it was convenient for his father to parade him around.

Character one seems like he’s set up to be a Batman-like superhero, while character two is set up to be the villain with a chip on his shoulder.

But in reality, character one is the villain terrorizing Paris by preying on people’s negative emotions, while character two is an absolute cinnamon roll of a human who wholeheartedly accepts his role as second in command of a superhero duo, then a superhero team, led by a female superhero. He’s not even an antihero, he just absolutely loves Ladybug and is absolutely willing to accept that she is in charge from the get go. It does also explain some of his attributes/actions (why he loves being a superhero so much bc he finally gets the freedom he never got before; his worst nightmare is being locked up) but it *explains and adds*.

Like. They could’ve used his tragic Disney Princess background to justify making him an asshole. But they gave him the backstory while also making him the sweetest, kindest, ladybug simp possible.

There’s so many things this show gets right (this is just one of them) and even tho it’s a kids show I recommend everyone watch it (at least the earlier seasons… jury’s still out on what Disney has decided to do with it since they acquired it lol)

Anyway. Am hoping to share any other tidbits that I learn along the way, but based on that 7 year gap I am not making any promises 😂

And then again there she was, embracing me into her warmth, always inviting always kind, her eyes shone like embers in the darkness engulfing us, but it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.. I could swear hundreds of times that it will be the most beautiful I’d ever see till the day I die.

She held me tighter for a second and let go, my arms were lonely again, but then she sat across from me, took my hands in hers and gave me a small toothy smile, I could see her barely as the clouds released the moonlight to filter through the darkness and onto us, we were glowing, we were glorious,

She spoke to me of times past, of times to come, of the lonely nights after lonely days and the longing to be seen, I sat there completely lost in her brilliant gaze– she never broke eye contact, and her amber gaze shifted like a storm as words flowed continuously, soft and harsh and cold and lonely, I wanted to reach out and stroke her head, but all I could do was hold on tighter to her hands, fingers intwined— “I am here” sign.

When she was done I knew the night was nearing an end, and that was all we had, I rarely ever see her but when she does appear to my eyes it’s always the most astounding memory anyone could hope for, the connection between us, the sensation of breathing and being alive— it was all her.

We spent the rest of the night naming stars that show up occasionally from the gaps in the clouds, ages have passed in a few hours but her warmth still surrounds me even now, after the cold days, during the blue and dry ones, and just like a high tide memories of her eyes wash over me and take me back, to her, to her smile, to our hands embracing tightly—her stormy eyes.

And I still hold on to that, when I look in the mirror on days when everything seems vain I can see her shadow within my eyes, a blessing and a curse of sorts, she stays beneath my skin, on sunny days I can hear her shouting out to the blue bright skies, soul raging and glorious as always— but in the end, they still call her monster.

They still curse her when she wears my face.

But to me she’s always the one who held me together, and the one love that held on the longest–the furthest.

and they just call her monster.

What are some effective ways to improve academic writing?

Academic Writing is basically scholarly writing which is written at university level for various research works by the individuals who are working in research field. It has a purpose targeting a specific audience.

It is descriptive in nature and therefore needs to be simple to read. One should not use a lot of difficult words and long sentences in academic writing. There should be a clear idea about the topic and the purpose of writing it. A proper format should be used for any kind of academic writing. For instance, introduction, body and conclusion can be used.

A basic outline should be made beforehand, so that there won’t be any confusion at any stage of writing the report. If a basic outline is made before starting, it would made everything clear and easy what all things needs to be covered, what is objective of writing and what should be the conclusion.

One should keep in mind the grammar rules and punctuation marks in academic writing. Because it would really be a turn off if the grammar is not correct while writing by the scholars. Spending so much of your time, efforts and hard work in it and using wrong grammar will waste all your hard work.

Using a good vocabulary is also important for a good academic writing. But a good vocabulary doesn’t mean including technical jargon or big words just for the sake of using it. How you use the language and words is essential for academic writing. And using obscure language just to look different and smart can take away the clarity from it. Therefore, one should keep in mind the right use of words.

Academic writing is generally descriptive and long, so there is a chance of using the same things, words or language. It should be noted that there is not much repetition of same context.

These are all basic things that one should follow to improve the academic writing but to improve it more effectively, one should read a lot of academic writings. If anyone wants to improve on something, he or she should be observing the same kind of work by other experts before starting their own.

It will also improve your thought process for academic writing. You would know beforehand how you should be writing and if there is any mistakes that you should avoid making.

One should keep in mind that he or she is not copying the ideas or sentences from anywhere because these days it is very easy to check for plagiarism online. Therefore, it is required to be creative and self made ideas should be used with proper evidences supporting your research work.
