Are there any names you can’t legally call your baby in Australia?

It’s a question many wanted answered by the ABC’s new show What the FAQ, says Kirsten Drysdale, a journalist at the public broadcaster. So when Drysdale gave birth to her third son in July, she decided to put it to the test.

Drysdale said she had been deciding between “Methamphetamine Rules” and “Nangs Rule”, referring to the Australian slang for nitrous oxide canisters used to get a fleeting high.

But she decided against Nangs Rule in case the approver at the registry didn’t know what Nangs were and it was approved.

For the folks outside Aus, and for the ones over here who slept on this show: It was for an informational comedy show called WTFAQ. They take viewer questions, research the facts, and present them in in an entertaining way. They cover everything, like:

Does feeling cold making you more likely to catch cold?

Does my dog love me?

If dolphins are mammals, where are their tits?

Do the Sovereign Citizens have any basis in legal reality?

Why do Greek statues have such little pee-pees?

Some of the stuff is Australia-specific, but most of it is internationally applicable.

So a show on the national broadcaster wanted to demonstrate how outlandish baby names will get rejected by the government.

Only problem is, when they had one of their journos submit a name that should have absolutely been rejected for her newborn kid, the government just... approved it.

Which means her newborn baby child is now legally known as 'Methamphetamine Rules' and thanks to how NSW operates even if she changes the name it'll still be on the kid's birth certificate for life.

Just to clarify, her baby does have a normal name (which hasn't been revealed because people deserve privacy!), this is just the name on the paperwork. And the journalist and her husband are working with the Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages to change the baby's birth certificate.
