Today's Date is May 8th, 2024, and today's card is Wurmcoil Engine
[ID Wurmcoil Engine's art depicts a massive winding black metal wurm with green accents. At its mouth there are many sharp metal fangs forming an open roaring maw. Interestingly it looks like it has spit (phyrexian oil maybe?) and on the inside of its maw it holds a foggy green light source. The background is very vague and foggy/dusty/smokey but it doesn have some vaguely pointy architecture around.
It's an artifact creature that costs 6 colorless mana. It's subtypes are Phyrexian Wurm and its rarity is Mythic Rare.
Its rules text reads "Deathtouch, lifelink
When Wurmcoil Engine dies, create a 3/3 colorless Phyrexian Wurm artifact creature token with lifelink."
Wurmcoil Engine's power and toughness are both 6.
Its artist is Raymond Swanland and its print year is 2022. Its from the set The Brother's War Retro Artifacts. Its originally from the set Commander 2014. End ID.]

Hi Mark! Yesterday is my birthday. May I get trivia among one of my favorite cards - Worldfire, Wurmcoil Engine, Radiant Performer, Sundial of the Infinite, or Vizzerdrix? Or a random card from MH3 not covered by your previous Making Magic articles?
Vizzerdrix got created as a card for a product called Starter. The reason we made it is we had a series of TV commercials, one of which featured Kezzerdrix from Tempest (it involved mixing a wrestler, a chainsaw, and a bunny in a machine). A different ad in the same campaign used an Orgg. So to tie to those, we made a simpler Orgg and Vizzerdrix, as the original cards were too complicated for a beginner product.
Happy Belated Birthday!

Feldon, trying *really* hard to make a duplicate of his wife: Aw shit. Another Wurmcoil Engine. Back to the drawing board.
Feldon of the Third Path is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of storytelling in Magic: The Gathering.
Tumblr media
Every part of this card comes together to tell you Feldon's story without ever overtly saying anything.
The art depicts him as a sturdy man, used to labor, and the workshop around him supports that. His hair is dark, but his beard is gray. He's getting older, but there's life in him yet. He gazes intensely at at the machined face of an automaton's head.
His ability doesn't do anything so gauche as bringing a card back from the graveyard. No, he targets a card in the graveyard -- someone, something that has died -- and and creates a copy, a facsimile, that's an artifact in addition to whatever it was before. But his creation is imperfect. It doesn't last. At the end of the turn, you sacrifice the copy. Greater magics than what Feldon posseses are required to make it stay more than a moment.
And then the flavor text. "She will come back to me." Powerful. Defiant. Sorrowful. Broken? Who can say, we haven't heard Feldon himself speak the words. But he lost someone, and he is determined, driven to bring her back the only way he knows how.
We're never told what the first two paths are, even if we can assume, but Feldon very clearly indicates what the Third Path is.

Máquina a Vorme Espiralado/ Wurmcoil Engine
Tumblr media
Criatura Artefato - Vorme

There's a frog-themed Midweek Magic this week where you make a historic brawl deck with any cards (even ones you don't own) and you get two emblems. One is a gimmicky sacrifice ability-manipulation thing, and the other is THIS FUCKER
Tumblr media
So obviously, everyone is stuffing their decks with frogs and changelings to take advantage of this absurd cost reduction effect. Except they're not. It seems like everyone except me is stupid and is playing a regular historic brawl deck that just happens to have a frog commander, and they're all getting stomped by my pile of frogs, lead by Grolnok to make sure I never run out of frogs to cast.
This is the first time I've ever done well in a constructed event
btw @thatonebjp you probably want to get in on this if you haven't already. If you'd like to jump right in, here's my decklist to copy for importing:

I am chaos - Deck 🔴
Canadian Highlander or Commander - 100 cards
Way back when, I built a Singleton deck for use in group play. It was 60 cards and mostly just used cards that changed how the rules worked. The deck was named after the quote on Maraxus of Keld from Weatherlight.

This deck plays in the same space but aligns to the current Singleton formats of Canadian Highlander and Commander.

Slamming a Wurmcoil Engine down on the bar and demanding the bartender make me the two best drinks he's ever made
wrenny and i spent all night coming up with a cute story idea for a cyberpunk-esque fuckedworld that uses magic the gathering as currency and social standing and dispute settlement. i just wrote the first page and a half tonight, mostly detailing the setting and main character's backstory, and wren read it and i was like do u like it? and she was like yeah i like it a lot!... i feel kind of bad for pooltoys in this world though. so i think im doing pretty good

I just wanted to be a voice in opposition to those upset about reprints like Oko, Elesh Norn, and Wurmcoil Engine. I think it’s awesome that some of these truly legendary cards can exist in an ordinary Limited format for which they are thematically relevant. I have no difficulty understanding that such cards appear so rarely that their impact on the format is minimal, certainly less so than even just the top common of the set. I also understand that Play Boosters are created with more than just Limited in mind. Without Stoneforge Mystic’s history on Constructed, no Limited player would have given it a second glance.
Often I put up someone complaining and it can read as if many people are making this complaint. Many more people are expressing happiness to get the cards than frustration that they potentially can show up in limited games.
