Artist Review 1
Artist Review 1: Illustrator Rebecca Mock’s GIF works and Brandon Tauszik and his GIF series on "Barbershop"
Find and post images, links, video or other information about each artist.
Create a short bio about each artist.
Compare and contrast their use of the GIF format, identifying similarities and differences.
Choose one work from each to describe in detail and explain why you picked it. (Use your own words. If you chose to include text from an article you should make it clear what text this is and note your sources.)
Ensure you post written response for both to receive full credit. thinking about the their creative approach to making, themes and ideas they investigate with their images.
Rebecca Mock
Short bio:
Animator and illustrator Rebecca Mock is known for her unique, expressive style, which mixes small characteristics with an overwhelming feeling of her state of mind. Her art pieces often feature vivid, intense hues and an important story element that transport her audience to magical dimensions. Mock has collaborated on plenty of displays, including as animated cartoons, book covers, and administrative graphics. Within the art and design worlds, she has gained attention and admiration for her creativity and flexibility.
Image I chose:
Why I picked it:
I chose this GIF from Rebecca's Mock because I felt it was quite relevant and personal to me. Although I don't usually enjoy reading, especially not books, I made a decision to read some this summer and found this GIF to be extremely relatable. Particularly how this GIF's colors are incredibly vivid and how they make me feel at ease, warm, and most importantly, relaxed.
Brandon Tauszik
Short bio:
Photographer and videographer Brandon Tauszik is well known for his perceptive views and powerful visual storytelling. His photography portrays real and meaningful moments that relate to subjects of cultural background, identity, and community. Tauszik's work has been varied in subject matter and media, showing his range and excellent attention to detail. He has become well-known for his ability to provoke strong tales and strong emotions through his photography and cinema.
Image I chose:
Why I picked it:
I chose to use this particular GIF out of all of Brandon Tauszik's "Barbershop" GIF series, since it was the one that really drew my attention. The photographer's technique of taking pictures that gives the impression that the audience is a part of the image itself. Since I'm a photographer, the images almost make me feel like I'm there. He certainly performed a fantastic job catching this moment while developing a series that only features a barbershop as the backdrop.
Similarities:
GIFs are used by both artists to create visually appealing and interesting content. They take advantage of the format's animation and repeating abilities to lure in and engage viewers.
Their GIFs usually employ animation or quiet motion to tell a story or introduce a topic. Their work becomes more immersive as a result of the variable layer that is introduced.
Both artists look for novel ways to communicate their concepts with the GIF format.
Differences:
Rebecca Mock frequently creates GIFs with elaborate, painterly-style images. She gives depth and movement to her complicated, dramatic compositions by using the format to its max. Mock's rich, textured artwork is enhanced with subtle, repetitive motions, which are the center of her GIFs.
While Brandon Tauszik uses material from his film or taking photos to create more realistic GIFs. They often feature real-life events, including candid conversations and interactions of his environment, giving the animated format a documentary-style impression.
