This response got long, sorry for sidetracking! I'm just floored with how much more Yi City makes sense through this lens; I had no idea this interview of MXTX existed.
With Xue Yang being a direct parallel to Jiang Cheng (that too, confirmed by the author), it makes the tragedy and the parallels of all the other characters involved in the subplot even more apparent.
Namely in that Xiao Xingchen and A-Qing are both parallels to Wei Wuxian, and Song Lan shares many similarities to both Lan Wangji and Wen Ning.
Xiao Xingchen, like Wei Wuxian, is an incredibly righteous and kind cultivator with a sense of humor. Plus they both have ties to Baoshan-sanren's mountain. MXTX says herself that Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian's relationship is complicated like Xue Yang and Xiao Xingchen's. Xue Yang is obsessed with keeping Xiao Xingchen attached to him and getting revenge; Jiang Cheng likewise blames Wei Wuxian for his insecurities and grief and is constantly pursuing him almost entirely to nurse his own grudges.
People tend to say that Xue Yang also having origins as a mistreated youth on the streets makes him a parallel to Wei Wuxian, but that's not true. He's far more vengeful and selfish in his thoughts and actions; A-Qing, who is brash but still good at heart, is much more similar to Wei Wuxian if you ask me.
If Xiao Xingchen represents Wei Wuxian's initial reputation as a good cultivator, A-Qing is the other half: someone who spent the majority of her life as a street orphan. Like Wei Wuxian, A-Qing ultimately chooses to do the right thing to help others even if it causes her harm in the end.
Furthermore, A-Qing distrusts Xue Yang's demeanor and intentions the whole time she knows him. She maintains a bantering rapport with Xue Yang while they all live together, knowing that she cannot risk genuinely angering him or arousing his suspicion out of fear for how he may retaliate against her and Xiao Xingchen.
After all, A-Qing isn't a cultivator. She has no backing, no real strength that she can fight and actually win with. She only has her wits, and when push comes to shove and she does reveal her own exhaustion, fear, and hatred of Xue Yang, she dies at Xue Yang's hands.
Xiao Xingchen, on the other hand, is more willing to trust and believe that Xue Yang is a good person. He has strong cultivation ability and moral character, and is both literally and metaphorically blind to Xue Yang's cruelty until Xue Yang makes the deception clear. XXC is so distraught by the selfishness and senselessness of Xue Yang's violence towards innocents with him as a proxy that he flat out kills himself.
I think both A-Qing's and Xiao Xingchen's feelings existed in Wei Wuxian to an extent when it comes to Jiang Cheng. The gratefulness to the Jiangs for being taken in, knowing he could be made to leave at any time. The playful banter with someone you've shared space with for so long, while also maintaining an acute understanding that you aren't on the same level socially. The discomfort of having to live with someone's casual callousness, seeing and thinking it but unable to truly voice a complaint or confront it until it's far too late.
As for Song Lan, he can be best described as an interesting mix of Lan Wangji and Wen Ning. All three are upright and pretty serious individuals. Song Lan's attachment and devotion to Xiao Xingchen resembles Lan Wangji's love for (wanting to make him laugh, for example) and Wen Ning's loyalty to Wei Wuxian (in life and after being turned into sentient fierce corpses).
Song Lan is the one who Xiao Xingchen was doing things for; their goal of starting a sect not tied to clan bloodlines mirrors Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning's intent of protecting the Wen remnants in the Burial Mounds.
Wei Wuxian gave up his position to do what was right and help the Wens, including Wen Ning. Meanwhile Xiao Xingchen gave up his eyes to help Song Lan, but Song Lan was furious both with the grief of the massacre of Baixue Temple (most likely paralleling Wen Ning's grief with his family's annihilation, though Song Lan is a lot more expressive with his anger) and of Xiao Xingchen hurting himself in such a way (Lan Wangji angry at Wei Wuxian using ghost cultivation). In both cases, they are separated for years because of the fight, though the exact details do differ.
As Jiang Cheng holds a grudge is against Wei Wuxian, Wen Ning, and to a lesser extent Lan Wangji, Xue Yang holds a grudge against both Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan.
Song Lan (Wen Ning) is the one who kills (verbally tears down) Xue Yang (Jiang Cheng) by the end of their respective stories for how Xiao Xingchen (Wei Wuxian) was treated.
Can you tell I'm on the verge of tears!? So much of the story lines up with these eight characters all paralleling each other, I'm dizzy. I may have missed or misinterpreted some things since I haven't read the novels in a while but I'm honestly so amazed at the level of detail that went into MXTX's writing.
Xue Yang and Jiang Cheng are Parallels
I wanted to make sure I covered this in my Yi City arc reread since it became such a hot topic on my blog for a minute. Wei Wuxian and Xue Yang are not parallels; Xue Yang and Jiang Cheng are. Here are two quotes from each individual about their never-ending hatred and perpetual thirst for vengeance paid over and over in blood:
Wei Wuxian retorted, “He’s already a dead man. I’ve also died once. What else do you want?”
Jiang Cheng pointed at him with his whip. “So what? He can die a thousand times, or even ten thousand times, but it’ll never appease the fury in my heart! Since he wasn’t destroyed then, then fine! I’ll personally destroy him today. I’ll go and torch him now, then scatter his ashes in front of you!!”
–Chapter 23: Malevolent Part 1: Running into Gunpoint, taming wangxian
“If you wanted to avenge yourself on Chang Ci’an for breaking your finger, you could have just cut off one of his and been done with it,” Xiao Xingchen said in disbelief. “If you absolutely cannot get over your grudge, then break two, or ten! Or you could have even cut off his arm—even that would have been better! Why did you have to kill his entire family? Don’t tell me you think a single one of your fingers is worth more than fifty lives?”
Surprisingly, Xue Yang pondered this carefully for a while. As though he found Xiao Xingchen’s question very strange, he replied, “Of course. The finger was mine, while those lives were other people’s. No matter how many I killed, it wouldn’t have repaid the debt. It was only fifty or so people—how could it make up for my single finger?”
–Chapt. 41: Flora IX, fanyiyi
Both of them use their trauma to lash out at innocent people who have done nothing wrong to them: Jiang Cheng chasing after Wen Ning (who, in fact, aided the Jiang heir at risk to his own life) despite having already successfully murdered his entire family for the crimes of the long-dead Wen Chao and Wang Lingjiao; Xue Yang chasing after the Chang Clan despite Chang Ping being the clan leader and not his father who hurt him.
At the same time, Xue Yang’s response provides a deeper look into why they have this mentality. “The finger was mine, while those lives were other people’s…” he says, “It was only fifty or so people—how could it make up for my single finger?” At the end of the day, Xue Yang and Jiang Cheng consider themselves above everyone and everything else, including laws and morality. In fact, this is their morality. In their world, they are justified in kidnapping and torturing people to death for reminding them of someone they do not like and are validated in annihilating whole clans because they consider an individual to have committed an offense against them. The lives of others mean nothing in their worldview; it is only their lives that hold any and all intrinsic value that must be protected at all costs.
#anyways i'm tired of people claiming that jc was never 'meant' to be seen as a bad guy#he certainly is!#mxtx saying he's not the worst guy on the docket#is not in any way shape or form saying that he is a good person#there is a whole world between 'misunderstood uwu baby' and 'devil incarnate'#jc through a combination of cowardice and the virtue of jin ling's existence#*just* misses out on the 'devil incarnate' side of the spectrum#and falls squarely into the 'bullies the weak but fears the strong' zone#xue yang on the other hand is devil incarnate on account of him actually having the spine to do what he wants#regardless of reputation or appealing to superiors#deserving of hell absolutely#but commendable for at least going after what he wants without crying about what others will think of him#if you're gonna be a villain then *be* one#grow a fucking backbone and take a stance on *something* without glancing over your shoulder to see if the audience will applaud your choic#<- prev tags i adore you yes yes yes absolutely#this is honestly one of my favorite metas now. so much clearly clicks together when you view yi city through this lens#this was the first time i saw mxtx's interview too i wish it was more available/commonly spread...#addition#my addition was such a long derail but by god IT ALL MAKES SENSE#mdzs#danmei

nie mingjue taking his little brother to live in a new area, and suddenly being surrounded by a series of very willing, very sexy twinks. the catch? each of them already comes with a kid!
(inspired by dream daddy simulator) (in this au nie huaisang is a teenager, while the rest of the named cast (excluding the kiddos) are adults)
introducing! jin guangyao and his obsessive chatter about his dad, and his job as finance manager at the family business! his adorable toddler, jin rusong, whose mother remains a mystery to this day! standing a whole head and a half shorter than nie mingjue, the man is observably hanging on by a thread! nie mingjue finds his hyper-competence very attractive, and, paired with his lack of self-care, it creates a titillating balance between teasing material and genuine concern.
lan xichen as a *secretly* insane, young adult who wants nothing more than a large family! he by-mistake-on-purpose gained full custody over his cousin, several times removed, lan jingyi, four years ago, and, to his chagrin, his love life seems to be the One Thing to suffer long-term consequences. he's extremely attractive and well-spoken, plus they're both fitness nerds, so they get along well! and. let's just say: lan xichen is not unpleasant to look at. (not really a twink but. suspend your disbelief. the hook of this post was just doing it's job.)
wei wuxian as nie mingjue's loud, gorgeous and annoying neighbour, and his equally loud but significantly less annoying kid, a-yuan! wei ying is a total flirt, and a total mess, which nie mingjue finds comedically endearing, but if he ever catches wei wuxian chatting with his best friend, lan wangji, the intense glaring might convince him to keep his hands off...
mo xuanyu as some college-age Dude who rents with wei wuxian, and is definitely too young to be talking to nie mingjue like that! his advances are extremely forward, unnervingly so - but nie huaisang likes him, so nie mingjue tolerates him. for now...
jiang cheng as an extremely proficient young lawyer who just got out of an intense custody battle for his beloved nephew, jin ling! he's stressed, well-dressed, and a complete asshole, but honestly? all that rage? it's kind of sexy! especially when nie mingjue sees him lifting weights at the gym, with that cute, concentrated pout on his face, and mcr playing so loudly it might be giving him hearing problems.
jin guangshan as an eternally revolting worm. nie mingjue would NEVER consider him EVER, but jin guangshan sure will try!
xiao xingchen as the long-suffering boyfriend of xue chengmei, and father to their fostered kid, a-qing. xue chengmei is mostly terrible, but at least a little bit intriguing. xiao xingchen is cute and seems(?) to be flirting with nie mingjue, but his 'taken' status makes nie mingjue uneasy, and he hesitates to flirt back.
so, who will nie mingjue end up dating? will he end up dating any of these men at all?
#mdzs#please please please reach the right audience PLEASE#nie mingjue#nie huaisang#wei wuxian#lan xichen#jin guangyao#mo xuanyu#jiang cheng#xiao xingchen#its hard to explain why I like this#dream daddy simulator au

Where did the theory of mxy bring a 17 year old come from? Like I watched the untamed, read the novel, watched the donghua and not once did I think he was even THAT young, Like its genuinely one of the small amount of theories that have me fighting the urge to pull my hair out cause I've seen ppl use it as a way to slander lwj.
People who can't read.
And wangxian antis who like to throw out the response that Wangxian is pedophilia.
Mo Xuanyu is 14 years old when Jin Guangshan summons for him again. We have the VERY narrow timeframe of 13 years, since he must have been brought into the Jin Clan just after Wei Wuxian's passing, and not in clan long enough when he was blacklisted by Jin Guangyao (who meticulously killed those who were against him starting with the He clan, Jin Guangshan and finally Nie Mingjue).
I'll go on a tangent here that it makes sense for Jin Guangyao to target Mo Xuanyu being a potentially claimed heir of Jin Guangshan, who after he died, they had no choice but to name Jin Guangyao as Chief Cultivator after Mo Xuanyu is defamed and having nothing in his name for the Jins to bother keeping him unlike Jin Guangshan the serial rapist and sexual harasser protected due to being an actual named heir and clan leader. Jin Guangyao does love his ironic revenge. We'll say Mo Xuanyu is thrown out 3 years after Wei Wuxian is killed being 17 years old at most generous, but I like to think Jin Guangshan died within the year post siege after we see Jin Guangyao with Xue Yang through the Villainous Friends extra making Mo Xuanyu 15 and without a secondary name that would be granted to gentry cultivators for turning of age and all the more of an embarrassment and failure he can't recover from socially.
This makes Mo Xuanyu 27 at time of present day story. It's roughly estimated that Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji were 21-22 years of age after the Siege of the Burial Mounds. Making Lan Wangji 34-35 in present day story. Potentially having an 8 year age gap between Lan Wangji and "Mo Xuanyu".
MXTX is fond of that play with an age gap of 8 years for her pairs but in each and every instance due to dying, having stopped physically aging, and literally being a whole different person, the age gap is pretty much so blurred it makes no sense to try arguing about it and kicking a fuss up. And still doesn't make Mo Xuanyu of Lan Sizhui's and Jin Ling's generation as he is literally a generation older than either of them. And why he is even addressed as "senior" Mo-qianbei (lit. Of the older generation).
Mo Xuanyu was of Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji's generation. Not the "new" that we specifically can point Jin Ling as. We get textual confirmation the upcoming Jin generational naming convention is to use the "ru" 如 character for their children, outright said by a 19-20 year old Wei Wuxian when he was talking to Jiang Cheng. Remember Jin Zixuan/Jin Zixun specifically have "zi" 子 in their generational names. Jin Guangyao was purposely given his father's prior generational Jin character of "guang"光 to add insult that he wasn't considered a part of his brother's generation of claim to the clan. Mo Xuanyu being brought in at 14 because Jin Guangshan hated Jin Guangyao getting anything from the Jins being a petty hateful person regardless of Jin Guangyao's loyalty to the clan.
This all takes very simple logic to parse out if you, ya know actually read. But then these are the people that claim to have read the story for "other" reasons because they don't like that Wangxian is the focal point and anyone who reads it for the focal point are the stupid ones while they're much more above for being not like other girls for fanficcing about side character A who's life was ruined by focal point of book and MXTX is main character syndroming wangxian and justifying how they can do no wrong next to my xyz baby that got called out in her story for being a loser, creep, unbecoming (and I don't like that because me projecting into the bad guy can't be wrong, I'm a good person, so let me slander the author and call her stupid and creepy and biased now).
#mdzs#mo dao zu shi#mo xuanyu#lol mxtx antis#lol wangxian antis#lol lwj antis#a lady that doth protest too much and all that

Daemon!Au where everyone, cultivator as normal people, has daemon. I had seen fanfics where daemon were tied to golden core but there i would like to read a story where they are tied to the soul. Because the idea of Wei Wuxian losing his daemon in the same time that his golden core is too sad.
Some ideas:
Wei Wuxian has a fox. her fur became all black after the episode of the Burial mounds (both because of the shock of losing the golden core + the ressentement energy).
Nie Huaisang has a Red Panda (of course Huaisang would have one of the cutest thing ever as daemon). For months, people thought that it would be a bird because she loved to fly.
Huaisang's daemon is the one who realised (too late) that the song of clarity was not played the same if it was Xichen or Meng Yao.
Nobody ever suspected someone who has a Red Panda as daemon to be the best actor ever and to plan a revenge for years.
Mingjue had a tiger. Unlike Mingjue, she was very patient. Like a predator watching her prey for a very very long time. She was also affected by the twisted song, so she didn't realize that Mingjue became unstable.
When Huaisang was little, Mingjue's daemon often hold Huaisang's daemon like a kitten while Mingjue was carrying his little brother to the training ground.
Jiang Cheng's daemon fought all his being for NOT become a wolf or a dog (because Wei Wuxian was SO scared by them) and managed to become a cat (Madam Yu wasn't happy because it looked too sweet). His daemon is a cuddler and is very sage. A shame that JC doesn't listen to her a little more. She has a doubt about the new golden core but never dared to speak about it.
Yanli would have a sheep (a Ram) and her mother was really annoyed because of it (not enough impressive). She spent years to feel guilty because of that, while loving deeply her daemon.
Madam Yu would have a Viper. She was very pissed about it and blamed her daemon about it. Barely spoke to him. And when she was speaking to him, she was verbally abusive. He tried to tell her to not hurt the children, to be more patient but after a while, he gives up. This bad relation had repercussions on her mental state, and so she was even more volatil.
Jiang Fengmian would have a Ibis or a otter.
Jin Zixuan would have rooster (because he's loyal and brave) and would be annoyed that Wei Wuxian keep calling him a peacock. "no Zixuan, it's you he call that" "what?" OR Zixuan HAS a peacock as daemon. The two are good.
Wei Wuxian parents had a horse for his father and a phoenix for his mother, because she has been raised by a immortal. All her students have mystical animals (dragons, unicorn, phoenix, etc...)
Lan Qiren would have a deer.
Meng Yao has a rabbit, which help his innocent act.
Xiao Xingchen would have a unicorn (symbol of justice in China) because he's the (son) student of a immortal.
Xue Yang would have a snake too. Who would always been wrapped around his neck. He's as much sadistic than his human.
Wen Qing would have a ox, determined and rebellious.
Lan Sizhui would have a white fox. He never knew why but Fox always make him nostalgic. He was very happy when his daemon took this form.
Lan Jinyi would have a panda.
Jin Ling is too young for his daemon to have a definitive form, but she often take a dog form, until they realize how much Wei Ying is scared of dogs.
Song Lan would have a dog, who are symbol of sensitivity and sincerity and loyalty.
A-Qing sadely died too young for her daemon to have settle on a definitive form. But he often took a bird form.
Wen Ning, like Yanli, would have a sheep. Because this animal is a symbolie of innocence, purity, sensibility.
Sadely a daemon vanishes when their human die, so ghosts and people like Wen Ning or Song Lan didn't have it back when they awaken in their new state.
Lan Xichen would have a dragon, even if he has not been trained by a immortal. His dragon always thought that Mingjue's death was suspicious and tried to explains Xichen that someone wasn't right. But Xichen trusted Jin Guangyao.
Mo Xuanyu had also a fox (black and Ginger). So When Wei Wuxian is bring back to life, his daemon also come back in the body of Mo Xuanyu's daemon and they both play a role to not be recognized buuuttt they can't fool Lan Zhan and his daemon.
Lan Zhan would have a lioness.

Here's a cool detail about Su Yishui's curse in Love of the Divine Tree.
When Ranran finds information about the Face-and-Heart Burning Curse, she learns that there are only two ways to remove the curse: (1) the cursed person must ask the caster for forgiveness, or (2) the cursed person must reach ascension.
Initially, Ranran thinks that Su Yishui plans to turn her into a Tonic Core that he will eat to increase his spiritual power and reach ascension. This method is also what Mu Qingge likely had in mind for Su Yishui to remove the curse, as Zeng Yi points out to him. At the time that she placed the curse, he was near the Transcendence stage, so the curse would naturally be removed once he sealed the Spirit Spring and ascended.
Of course, that's not what Su Yishui wanted. He sacrificed half his Golden Core to resurrect Mu Qingge, causing him to drastically decline in spiritual power and forcing him to recover in seclusion for 18 years. He chose love over ascension. Funnily enough, this is the same choice Mu Qingge made by dying in his place.
Su Yishui never intends to remove the Burning Curse. u/ElsaMaeMae points out in this excellent episode discussion post that when the curse is placed, he looks like he has been given a parting gift by his lover.
That's why he's so caught off-guard when Ranran somehow manages to remove his curse. It seems random and inexplicable, and I definitely glossed over this on my first watch of the show. But it's actually perfectly in line with the previously established rules for this curse. Look at this part of the conversation that leads up to the removal:
Master, I've always had a question. I'm cultivating for Ling Xiao. But given your overwhelming power, you still practice diligently every day. What is it for? Because of a person. I made some mistakes in the past. I want to make amends for these wrongdoings.
Ranran then offers Su Yishui some of the sweet yams she made, telling him to smile a little. He accepts, and the curse is lifted.
It's not done on purpose, but in this exchange, Su Yishui implicitly asks Mu Qingge for forgiveness, and Xue Ranran gives it to him. Thus, the first method for removing the curse is achieved. It is the method that requires communication and trust, as opposed to ascension, which requires a selfish acquisition of power.
Su Yishui spends so much of the show's duration in atonement, convinced that he can never repay what he owes Mu Qingge, but in reality, he's had her forgiveness for a long time.
(Side note: I know these kinds of dramas never want to make their actors look anything less than ethereal, but the way they made the Burning Curse look like a bunch of sick tattoos removes some of the impact of this scene. I think some part of Su Yishui believes that Mu Qingge only took interest in him because of his good looks, but Xue Ranran proves otherwise by loving him even though he is disfigured by the curse. It's a proper Beauty and the Beast situation, complete with a cure by true love.)

Tag Nominations OPEN!

Tagset | MXTX Exchange
Any tag or ship pertaining to an MXTX work will be acceptable! Broader tags with themes will also be accepted! Please just ensure that the concept you are attempting to convey is clear.
Nominate now!
Nomination Guidelines:
Please nominate all relationships under
人渣反派自救系统 - 墨香铜臭 | The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System - Mòxiāng Tóngxiù
天官赐福 - 墨香铜臭 | Tiān Guān Cì Fú - Mòxiāng Tóngxiù
魔道祖师 - 墨香铜臭 | Módào Zǔshī - Mòxiāng Tóngxiù
For the purposes of this exchange, do NOT nominate a relationship tag under a specific adaptation. As an example, if you would like to nominate a character from Chen Qing Ling/The Untamed adaptation of Modao Zushi, do NOT nominate your relationship tags under that adaptation. This is to avoid relationships being tagged twice. You WILL have the opportunity to request a specific adaptation when you are filling out your request in sign ups. But this is not the place for that. Any relationship tags that are nominated under an adaptation will be automatically rejected. Again, you will be absolutely welcome to use your specific preferred adaptation later in the sign up process, this is just not the place for it.
Relationship tags will need to be alphabetical and using ao3's current canon tag for the character. If you would like to nominate a character for solo adventures rather than a relationship, you must add "Solo: " before the characters name. Crossover ships are accepted so long as the crossover is within the MXTX characters.
Additional tags need to be prompts for a story. The prompt can be as specific as "Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan are twins and go conquer the northern desert together" or as vague as "Soulmates AU". But there needs to be a prompt described with the tags.

Examples of relationship tags that will be accepted:
"Meng Yao | Jin Guangyao/Nie Mingjue"
"Solo: Xie Lian"
"Shen Jiu | Original Shen Qingqiu & Shen Yuan | Shen Qingqiu"
"Hua Cheng/Wei Ying | Wei Wuxian"
Examples of relationship tags that will NOT be accepted:
"Nie Mingjue/Meng Yao | Jin Guangyao" (REASON: the ship is not in alphabetical order, this increases the likelihood of accidental double tags)
"Xie Lian" (REASON: missing the "Solo: ", this is a formatting choice by the mods to make the tags clearer)
"Shen Jiu & Shen Yuan" (REASON: the courtesy names are not included, this increases the likelihood of accidental double tags as the official tag for both character uses the courtesy names)
"Chu Wanning/Hua Cheng" (REASON: crossover ships are accepted for this event, but only within the MXTX bubble. Please wait on this delightful crackship for future danmei events that would suit it!)
(these rules exist to avoid doubling ship/character tags and therefore make the matching process smoother)
Examples of additional tags that will be accepted:
"Xie Lian tops Hua Cheng for the first time"
"Character A is in love with Character B but their parents don't approve!"
"Fandom AU: Liu Mingyan and Nie Huaisang participate in a big bang together"
"stuck in a time-loop together with your mortal enemy"
"Arranged Marriage AU"
Examples of additional tags that will NOT be accepted:
"Top!Xie Lian shippers should all die" (REASON: this has nothing to do with the event, this is your personal opinion, unnecessary drama, and not a prompt)
"Don't make Qi Rong a bad person" (REASON: this is a DNW, not a prompt)
"BingQiu forever!" (REASON: this is a declaration of your love for a ship, not a prompt)
"Warning: Xue Yang | Xue Chengmei" (REASON: this is not a prompt, please try rephrasing)
"so this one guy sees this other guy and then they like do purple elephant blanket tree sky yesterday walking pizza and aliens" (REASON: I have no idea what you're talking about, please try rephrasing to make your prompt easier to parse)
Please just try to avoid character bashing, ship bashing, fandom wank, and general bullshit in your tag nominations. Please focus on what you WANT to read, not what you hate seeing.
Please think carefully about your tags! Matching will be done via relationship + additional tags.
PLEASE NOTE: This is an 18+ event and therefore some tag nominations may be 18+. Do NOT nominate tags if you are not 18+. Do not engage with this event if you are not 18+.

hello! for the wip name game, may i ask about "jiang yanli x xue yang h/c"? 👀
this one has been in my brain for a while but only recently actually started on virtual paper. it's basically set up as a kind of sequel/follow-up to this world is gonna break your heart, which really doesn't need either but I thought it might be fun. the concept is basically just "years after disappearing from jiang yanli's life after murdering jin guangshan, xue yang turns up again" and I don't really know where it's going to go other than there. probably nowhere, I don't expect there to be a plot to this one.
It’d been five years since Jin Guangshan’s death – five years since she’d negotiated her return to Lotus Pier from Jinlintai. A-Ling had grown (so fast, what a difference five years could make in the life of a child), and so had her fledgling sect. Still barely a shadow of what it had been before, but the Jiang name still carried some weight and she had to start somewhere. Five years of (at least relative) peace and security. She wondered sometimes about the man who’d made it possible. What he was doing. Where he was. If he was even still alive. But she’d long-since resigned herself to never knowing. All she could do was hope he was well, somewhere. Most likely that was too much to hope for, but she would anyway.

Phoenix Song 17
In the end it took Shen Xue four days to finish it. It would be a direct battle, and he could only hope that it wouldn't destroy him doing so. If Luo Binghe turned against him he could end up aiding the system. Luo Binghe would work with him if his precious shizun told him to of course, but that would require cooperating with the imposter. Shen Xue would rather take the risk, confident he could handle it.
Shen Xue spent some time singing to Liu Qingge as a phoenix before he left that evening for Qing Jing Peak. It would be the last thing he could give to the war god. He waited until the imposter went to sleep, and slipped in. He silently activated a talisman that would keep the imposter asleep until he was discovered. Someone would come looking for him, but it would be enough to keep the imposter from disturbing him.
Shen Xue slipped over to the little beast's room next. The half demon brat woke up at the intrusion, and clearly was ready to raise the alarm. Shen Xue was too swift however, using a paralysis talisman. He grabbed the boy and headed out. "You may not believe this one, but this is a 'gift' for your master," he told the little beast. "He will be pleased if this array works."
Luo Binghe struggled, furious at the ice beast's presumptuous actions. How dare he assume anything! He was just a filthy beast that killed people! He was nothing like Binghe's beloved shizun! Shen Xue brought them into Ling Xi caves, and quickly began to lay down the array. He drew blood from Luo Binghe and added it to the ink he was using. He needed as much power as he could in setting all of this up. He worked quickly, sealing them from intrusion from the outside world before finally setting down his creation. He activated the array, and Luo Binghe gasped as he became aware of something new inside himself. The battle began.
Shen Qingqiu’s eyes cracked open as he awoke. He felt oddly stiff. He went to shift, to stretch, anything only for his muscles to not respond. His eyes snapped wide at the realization. He couldn’t move. Even his lips felt sealed shut. A rather undignified whimper tore itself from his throat. Was this Binghe’s doing? No his little lotus hadn’t been blackened yet it was way too early!
There was a knock on his door. "Shizun?" Ming Fan called inside.
For once in his entire transmigrated life he was blissfully happy to hear Ming Fan’s voice. He tried to call out but his mouth wouldn’t work. He tried to scream but all that came out was another high whimper. Come on, come get your Shizun. You’re the head disciple surely you have permission to come in!
There was a long pause. "Shizun, are you alright?" Shen Qingqiu cried out once more. It was far too quiet. Ming Fan wouldn’t be able to hear him from the front door. He’s not alright! Come check on him!
Ming Fan opened the door. No one was in the front. He looked around carefully. He kept periodically calling out for his teacher, willing to leave if it was unnecessary. No one had seen Shen Qingqiu this morning. They hadn't seen Luo Binghe preparing breakfast either. It was odd. He entered the bedroom and saw Shen Qingqiu paralyzed in bed with a talisman on him. He rushed forward and pulled it off. "Shizun!" He'd been attacked!
Shen Qingqiu threw himself upright once the talisman had been removed. “Where is Binghe?” He demanded. If he’d been attacked then surely Binghe had been too. The only one he could think of that could do such a thing is that Shen Xue.
"No one has seen him Shizun," Ming Fan quickly reported.
“Begin a search.” He waved him off. “He must have been stolen by the same one that attacked me.” He was down to his sleeping robes in front of a disciple, oh this is miserable.
Ming Fan nodded. "Yes Shizun!" He ran off and began to organize the search. Alarm rang through the sect.
Yue Qingyuan arrived a mere half hour later eyes blown wide. "Xiao Jiu!"
Shen Qingqiu resisted the urge to flinch at the name. He flicked open his fan and coolly fanned himself. “Zhangmen-shixiong,” he greeted.
"Are you harmed?" Yue Qingyuan looked over him as if he would be able to locate hidden injuries with just his eyes.
“This master is fine. He thanks Zhangmen-shixiong for his concern.” He turned his head away from him. The way the sect leader looked at the scum villain made his stomach churn.
Yue Qingyuan nodded. He remained intensely focused on Shen Qingqiu. "Do you know what they were after? How they got in? I promise I'll have the security updated immediately." This place was supposed to be safe for Xiao Jiu, not a place he was attacked!
“Considering my disciple is missing he is likely what they’re after. I am unaware of how they entered or what they wish from Binghe.” He knew way more than that but he couldn’t just tell the sect leader who he really was!
Yue Qingyuan frowned. "I will alert Liu Qingge and Lian Qingliu." They were the Sect's best trackers, hopefully they could find Shen Qingqiu's disciple and the culprit.
“This master would greatly appreciate it,” he dipped his head to the sect leader. “He is very concerned for his disciple.”
Yue Qingyuan nodded. "I will keep you informed." And stay close while the search happened so Shen Qingqiu couldn't be further harmed. The messages informing Liu Qingge and Lian Qingliu of what had happened arrived swiftly.
Liu Qingge wasn’t sure why he was being summoned to hunt down a single child but still agreed. This was for Shen Qingqiu after all. It wasn’t particularly difficult to track down the remnant traces of the brat’s qi. It was intertwined with something vaguely familiar. It seems he went willingly as there were no signs of a struggle.
A short distance into the cave was a blocking array meant to keep others out. "They found your disciple's trail," Yue Qingyuan informed Shen Qingqiu.
Shen Qingqiu nearly blurted something distinctly out of character. He cleared his throat and held his fan in front of his face. “Is that so? Where has he gone?”
"Lingxi Caves," Yue Qingyuan answered. "But it's been blocked."
“So we need to open them,” he replied firmly. Oh fuck. He’s supposed to be a talisman expert. He’s grown decent but he can’t compare to the real Qing Jing Peak Lord!
Yue Qingyuan nodded. He was more than fine escorting Shen Qingqiu to the caves. "How lo g do you think opening them will take?"
“I can hardly decide such a thing without seeing the caves myself,” he replied sharply. He didn’t know if he could. He’s so screwed.
Yue Qingyuan nodded. They headed into the caves and stopped at the blocked entrance Liu Qingge had found.
Shen Qingqiu studied the array with a pensive expression all the while screaming internally. He’s never seen this before. This is far more complex than anything he’s read about! “It will take some time to unravel this.” By the time he did Binghe would likely be dead.
Yue Qingyuan nodded. "If you need anything just let me know."
“This one thanks Zhangmen-shixiong.” He left for Qing Jing once more and gathered all the books he could find on unraveling arrays. The original goods had to have something on it!
Time passed. On the second day the System window weakly flickered. Shen Qingqiu flinched as the system flickered. "Hey- damn system- now's not the time to be glitching out," he hissed as he worked.
[The protagonist has entered {Hidden Quest} plotline! Pay 10,000 B points to reveal {Hidden Quest}?]
What kind of ripoff- he doesn’t have that many points! “No! Just tell me what’s going on!” He snapped.
The System flickered again and closed itself.
“System- hey- aren’t you supposed to have constant service?” He tried to open the system again.
[This System is happy to offer Host 24/7 customer service!] The System chirped.
“Is there anything I can do that I can afford?” He demanded. The System again closed itself. Attempts to reopen it were only met with brief flickers.
“Glitchy fuckin thing-“ Shen Qingqiu buried his face into his hands.
Yue Qingyuan came that evening with a meal. "Shen Qingqiu," he greeted softly. "How is progress?"
"Slow," he replied coldly. "The person that built this array is an expert." Please leave, he can't face the sect leader like this.
"I am sure you will solve it."
"I have to." Otherwise he'll be exposed as a fraud to Yue Qingyuan. Shen Xue's likely planning to do that anyway. Yue Qingyuan hesitantly touched Shen Qingqiu's shoulder once before retreating.
The third day the System started throwing up error messages, and informing Shen Qingqiu he needed to reconnect with the protagonist.
Shen Qingqiu began painstakingly unraveling the array. He barely knew what he was doing. Prodding at the array served to weaken it but the progress was far too slow. The spam of error messages didn't help. Something was happening to Binghe.
The fourth day the System released the fake jade pendant. It was the last response the System gave. The morning of the fifth day the array was released. Shen Qingqiu could finally go in.
Shen Qingqiu sprinted inside with the pendant clutched in his grip. Binghe had to be alive. After everything he couldn't lose him. Surely the scum villain didn't kill him.
Luo Binghe was walking towards Shen Qingqiu. When he saw his teacher he burst into a run and embraced him. "Shizun!" Oh, his teacher looked awful! It had been so long, but he had defeated the demon parasite within him, and they were together again.
Shen Qingqiu nearly sobbed with relief. "You're alive!" He clutched Binghe close. "I thought-" He shook his head. He tried to prod at the System. The protagonist is back! Surely you should start working again.
"I thought we would finish before you noticed," Binghe said guiltily. He hugged back tightly. "I'm sorry. I just wanted to help."
"What are you talking about?" He gently pat his head. "What have you been doing in here?"
"Shen Xue said he finished the research. We just needed to activate the array." Binghe looked at his teacher eagerly. "There was something inside me Shizun!"
So that was why the System started freaking out. Shen Qingqiu slumped in relief. It's gone. He'll never have to hurt the precious white lotus. "Is it gone for good?"
"It is," Binghe promised. "It won't ever touch you again Shizun. This disciple promises!"
Shen Qingqiu nodded and held out the false jade pendant to him. "This belongs to you." No point in keeping it anymore if there's no more points to be deducted.
Binghe froze and looked at the pendant. "You...you found it? Shizun." He teared up taking the pendant back.
"That's another thing- I- I'm not your Shizun. That Shen Xue is the real Shen Qingqiu." Might as well rip the bandaid off. He's going to have to flee the sect soon anyway.
Binghe's mouth dropped open. "Shizun?"
"I died and the thing inside of you- the System- it placed my soul into Shen Qingqiu's body and forced his out. I had to act as him or risk being killed by the System. I never wanted to hurt Binghe." That should be enough to dissuade the protagonist from hunting him down! He's not the real scum villain.
Binghe clung tightly to his shizun again tears of relief escaping from him. The first shizun he had met had been a monster. The one he loved wasn't him, it was someone better. And he had helped to rescue him. Shen Xue's part in that was immediately discarded. It was only what he should do to repay what he did to Binghe. "I'm so glad you're my Shizun now." Binghe looked up at him. "You're far better than the other one. I'm your disciple, not his."
"Binghe-" He faltered. This isn't what he expected at all. He's glad the protagonist doesn't hate him but still! He sighed and hugged him close, gently patting his head as he did. "I can't be your Shizun anymore. I'll have to leave Cang Qiong. Shen Xue is going to reveal that I'm not the real Shen Qingqiu."
Binghe frowned. "I'll go with you." Shizun couldn't go out alone! He needed someone to look after him!
"Binghe, you have to keep training in cultivation. Please don't feel like you have to follow me just because I was your Shizun." He pulled away from him. He doesn't want the sect to think he kidnapped a disciple on top of everything.
"I'll keep up my training!" Binghe promised. "I won't disappoint you!"
"Cang Qiong can help you more than I can. I barely know anything about cultivation," he tried to reason.
"That's fine," Binghe said firmly. "I only want to stay with Shizun."
Shen Qingqiu faltered. He couldn’t say no to the protagonist when he gets like that. “…alright fine. Let’s go.” They’d have to pack and flee swiftly.
Binghe perked up. "Yes Shizun!" He would make sure Shen Qingqiu had everything he could possibly need as they traveled. Shen Qingqiu returned to the bamboo house and drafted a note to the rest of the peak lords explaining the situation and telling them not to come find him or Binghe. After that he packed a bag and grabbed all the money he had. He trusted Binghe to take the rest.

I’d be inclined to think that Jin Guangyao was keeping him around in case he needed him. His reputation is in the dirt so he’s not much of a threat now, and he was trusted enough to be able to get into the Jin treasure room to learn the ritual that he used to bring back Wei Wuxian.
It’s probably something between like Sisi and Xue Yang, he doesn’t want him there anymore, but he hasn’t fully played out his uses for Jin Guangyao and thus he’s left alive and hidden away. While CQL made the last cut on Wei Wuxian’s wrist dependent on killing Jin Guangyao, he’s notably absent from all of Mo Xuanyu’s revenge wishes and writings in the book itself.
They probably had a better relationship than it looked like at first glance, but we all know how Jin Guangyao treats the people he likes*, if Jin Ling, Qin Su and Sisi are anything to go by.
(*For a certain value of like, of course, everyone is expendable eventually, but they do last quite a bit longer than anyone else that close to him without as granting him as many benefits as Lan Xichen’s friendship does)
When I said “kept him around,” I wasn’t asking why Jin Guangyao didn’t kill Mo Xuanyu but why he kept him in the clan for so long. I don’t think that he was kept alive because Jin Guangyao felt there may have been some use to him but because he knew (and possibly ensured) that Mo Xuanyu would be tortured once sent back to the Mo family. Since it wasn’t a secret that the Mo family treated him horribly, and they made it very public that he had “gone mad” (whether this was a real or rumored madness), I doubt Jin Guangyao sent him back there with the intention of hiding him away for future use. I think that was specifically to torture him for having been brought into the clan as Jin Guangshan’s new favorite. I just don’t understand why he’d wait until, likely, Mo Xuanyu’s adulthood to kick him out.
#mdzs asks#admirableadmiranda#xy still had use to jgy#and sisi was someone who had never done anything to jgy and was only incidentally caught up in his schemes#mxy fits neither of those bills#cause he has no use as an ‘insane man’ tortured by his natal family#and there is no former affection like between jgy and sisi#jgy doesn’t honor relationships with people just because they may like him#they have to *do* something for him which i doubt mxy did#jgy treats mxy like he did jzx just without killing him

Enemies/Rivals to Lovers recipe
(with the mild version aka Pride and Prejudice and the tragic version aka Romeo and Juliet) Step 1: The main heroes are on the opposite sides of any scale (the grumpy one vs a cheerful one, a kind and stupid one vs a cunning and vile one, a demon vs a god, a master vs a servant, people of enemy states or absolutely different cultures etc.).
A cheerful and funny little bird demon-yao Qing Qing and a grumpy and stone-faced deity of Netherworld Xue Qianxun Step 2: They are forced to communicate with each other without a chance to avoid it (e.g. an arranged marriage, being trapped somewhere together, working as a mole in the enemy camp etc.).
Asura King Xuan Ye plays out damsel in distress to get undercover into Heavenly Realm and his future lover Ran Qing is the one who "rescues" him.
Step 3: One party get impressed by unique character features of other (e.g. the person is the only one who isn't terrified by other's scary reputation, the only one who treats other party well etc.).
Even kings and princes are in absolute terror seeing Gwi - an immortal all-powerful vampire, and only Hye Ryung hates him so much that dares to bicker, scold and deny him. Step 4: One of the parties takes the first step towards another and that melts another`s heart.
Even if Hou Ling Changjin hurt Princess Bao Zhu for her miraculous blood, she still cares for him and doesn`t hold a grudge.
"You are injured!"
Step 5: Here come mutual pining, UST and moral sufferings "what is more important: to fulfil the mission / to be accepted by the society / whatsoever or to love?"
Gong Shangjue doubts if he can indulge himself being gentle with the girl he likes if she is an assassin from the enemy clan.
Shangguan Qian adds Shangjue`s favorite flowers into her tea and thinks about her mission of taking him down.
Step 6: It`s time to confess the feelings.
Leader of a diabolic sect Li Chenlan comes to save his beloved who hated him and tried to kill him and promises her to be her sword and shield. So romantic!
Step 7: The parties try to solve the problem that keeps them apart. If the problem is internal (it has something to do with beliefs and prejudice of a person), here it will be solved and «happily ever after» begins.
Despite of his low social status Hao Du ventures to participate in the competition, wins the right to marry the princess (who he is in love with) and dares to be honest explaining that he did it not only in order to save her from a Barbarian prince but because he truly wants to be with her. Step 8: If the problem is external (there is a large-scale conflict and the parties are just some insignificant participants of it), one of the parties sacrifices themselves to solve the problem.
Before saving the world by the cost of his life Demon God Tantai Jin engraves his name on his own tombstone placed next to his beloved wife's one, so in the future she could mourn him in a suitable place.
Step 9: In a satisfying story there is a magical reward of party's brave deed, which is a happy end.
Demon Lord Dongfang Qingcang sacrificed himself in order to save the girl he loved and died but his girlfriend (who happens to be a Goddess with abilities to resurrect the dead) nurtured a piece of his primordial spirit for 500 years and brought him back to life. Side note: If you want to add some chili pepper into your story, you can break this scheme any step from Step 4 on: pining could be one-sided, UST could never ever be resolved, characters could prefer their goals to love or maybe death or other circumstances would do them apart against their will.
The Wolf and Ma Zhaixing finally got together but the cruel world couldn`t allow it to last anytime long.
Bon Appétit! Your Enemies to Lovers story is well-baked!

MDZS Shapeshifting Cultivation AU plans
this is mostly just a note for my future fanfic writing, because I have a lot of fic ideas surrounding these ideas and plan to link this post in their notes. posting this publicity for any feedback (pls i beg any ideas) and if anyone wishes to use this as well for fics go ahead!!
Non-cultivators do not have animal traits. These traits come through by learning shape-shifting cultivation.
Not only is it extremely difficult to learn to hide their traits, it is extremely rude to do so for many reasons. The main and biggest reason is hiding your traits as a cultivator is like a big “fuck you” to your ancestors.
While there is A LOT of genetic factors, that is not always the case. The genetic factor is usually just upon the main clan families. A cultivator can never gain traits from the main clans, so they are seen as mythical beings even within this universe.
For rogue cultivators it’s USUALLY random, and can even be from the outer clan types. This is because somewhere in their family tree far back there would have been someone from this clan.
Cultivator children born within a main clan branch have their animal traits from a very young age, and they do not typically change beyond a FEW exceptions. If these changes ever happen, even to outer branching families it’s seen as negative, as they have “abandoned” their clan.
Qishan — Wen family are wolves, outer branches are based on house dogs
lmao wwx is scared of dogs it’s perfect
Wen Rohan — Black wolf (like a Tiangou)
Wen Chao — Brown wolf
Wen(Zhao) Zhuliu — Asian Black Bear, often confused as a dog bc he was taken in by the Wens and all that
Wen Ning — Siberian Husky
Wen Qing — German Shepherd
Wen Yuan — Rabbit (??? i’ll explain it in the fic. maybe. maybe it’s better to just leave it a mystery LMAO)
Yunmeng — Main Jiang family wild/big cats, otherwise house cats
Jiang Fengmian — Leopard
Yu Ziyuan — Spider
Jiang Cheng — Lynx
Jiang Yanli — Tiger
Wei Wuxian — Black Fox
Wei Changze — Maine Coon
Lanling — Main Jin family are Peacocks, otherwise birds
Jin Guangshan — Peacock, normal coloring
Jin Zixuan — Peacock, normal coloring
Jin Guangyao — Peacock, white coloring
Qin Su — Peacock, Red coloring, was thought to be a phoenix so… yeah that. happened.
Mo Xuanyu — Peacock, Charcoal/Black colored, often called a crow to belittle his heritage
Jin Ling — Qiongqi
Xue Yang — an actual crow
Qinghe — Main Nie family are Qilin, others are other horned beings (deer, moose, sheep, ect.)
Gusu — Only main family are Dragons, others are bunnies (how does this make sense? it doesn’t but it just is how it is.)
Also, eastern dragon, not western. Wormji.
Lan Wangji’s mother was a White Long-tailed weasel.
Other
Song Lan — Black bat (it’s funny bec–)
A-Qing — a mole
Baoshan Sanren and her disciples become Nine-Tailed Foxes through cultivating. One of if not the only exceptions to changing attributes the cultivation world has ever seen. Nobody knows how it’s done, and only her disciples have ever become nine-tailed foxes.
This pisses off the Wens no doubt, because they think as canines the Nine-Tailed Fox should belong to them.
Cangse Sanren was a grey nine-tailed fox
Xiao Xingchen was a white nine-tailed fox
