"We live in times of high stress. Messages that are simple, messages that are inspiring, messages that are life-affirming, are a welcome break from our real lives." -- Simon Sinek 🌅 Repost @harvard_business_review • • • • • • Have you been spending too much time staring at a screen lately? Though video chat apps and other technologies connect us while we work remotely, they can also cause mental, emotional, and muscle fatigue. Finding ways to proactively disconnect throughout your day can help you maintain and regain your energy. Here are five ways to take a break from your screen: 1) Don’t default to video. If a meeting doesn’t need it, consider other options. A phone call will often work just fine. 2) Block out time on your schedule where you’re not available for meetings. This can temper how much virtual communication you have each day. Set aside most of a morning or afternoon, or block out a few one-hour chunks of time throughout the day. 3) Choose physical over digital where you can. Brainstorming for an article? Write out your thoughts on paper. Creating a road map for a big project? Sketch the initial draft on a whiteboard. Reading a book? Pick up a print copy. 4) To counteract the fatigue caused by sitting rigidly in front of your computer, move around as much as you can. In between meetings, take a walk to the kitchen to refill your water or coffee. When you need a quick break, do a few simple movements like rolling your shoulders to get the blood flowing. 5) Take tech-free breaks over lunch and find activities to do that don’t involve a screen at the end of the day. Stepping away from technology not only gives your brain a break; it also gives you the added bonus of perspective. — Adapted from "5 Tips to Reduce Screen Time While You’re WFH," by Elizabeth Grace Saunders. "I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts." -- Abraham Lincoln ☀ Repost @harvard_business_review • • • • • • It is often said that a strong vision makes a good leader. But in a crisis, people don’t need a vision to inspire them — they’re already raring to act. Instead, they need what psychologists call “holding," or leaders who acknowledge people’s emotions and give them a sense of context and reality. Holding allows people to channel their desire to act into something purposeful — and it allows them to more fully be themselves (and thus to be more mentally healthy). To provide institutional holding, tell your people what will happen to their salaries, health insurance, and working conditions. What will change about how they do their work? What are the key priorities now? Who needs to do what? Dispel rumors. Encourage and protect everyone’s participation even more than you usually do. Do these things before you recommend the usual regular breaks, meditation, or exercise — otherwise you will just be neglecting your duty of care. Now, turn your attention to interpersonal holding. To do this well, you need to be in the present. Your impulse may be to focus on the future but that will be little more than escapism if you cannot witness and understand people’s immediate experience and concerns. Give people permission to feel whatever it is that they are feeling without shame and to be curious about the future. Don't be afraid to model those behaviors, too. The core of holding is acknowledging distress and difficulty without giving into powerlessness. It is leaders who hold through this crisis who will keep their organizations afloat and to whom we’ll turn when time comes to articulate a vision for the future. — Adapted from "The Psychology Behind Effective Crisis Leadership," by Gianpiero Petriglieri. "The most important thing in changing human behavior is the person's motivation." -- Milton H. Erickson 🔥Repost @harvard_business_review • • • • • • Government and public health organizations have been tasked with the challenge of changing behavior — getting people to not only practice social distancing and shelter in place but do it for weeks and potentially months. Not surprisingly, almost everyone is relying on the standard approach to drive change: Tell people what to do. Issue demands like: “Don’t go out,” “Stay six feet apart,” Wash your hands,” and “Wear face masks.” But while directives have been a standard approach to changing public behavior for decades, they often fail because people hate being told what to do. This can even be seen today: some people are still or have resumed congregating in groups, and protesters have even begun to demand that businesses reopen sooner than experts suggest. This begs the question: Is it really possible to persuade people to change their behavior? Researchers say that, yes, it is, if you follow three steps: First, you can increase people’s sense of freedom and control by pointing out a disconnect between their thoughts and actions, or between what they might recommend for others versus do themselves. Take staying at home. For young people who might resist, ask what they would suggest an elderly grandparent or a younger brother or sister do. Second, pose questions, rather than making statements; when you force people to figure out their own feelings or opinions on the issue, it is more likely to drive action. Finally, ask for less; start with small requests and ramp up to big ones. Government officials responding to the pandemic are already doing this to some extent by setting initial end dates for social distancing measures, then extending them. — Adapted from "How to Persuade People to Change Their Behavior," by Jonah Berger. "The blockchain is going to change everything more than the Internet has." -- Brock Pierce 🔥 Repost @forbes • • • • • • Tesla and BMW are taking the lead in innovating a supply chain renaissance with blockchain. In the past week, BMW released details about their project called PartChain that utilize blockchain technology in its logistics operations. Tesla Inc was involved with a blockchain pilot project that provided improved sea waybill information and thus efficiencies for all participants in the project ran by a large shipping consortia. The benefits driven from using blockchains, like improved cost savings, enhanced traceability and increased transparency, are strong drivers for such innovations. 🔗 in bio to learn more. The risk is that when trust is lost its almost never restored 🔥 Repost @harvard_business_review • • • • • • Trust has three core drivers: authenticity, logic, and empathy. When trust is lost, it can almost always be traced back to a breakdown in one of them. Academics call this idea a “trust wobble.” In simple terms, it’s the thing that’s most likely to fail you. Everybody has a "wobble," and it can be different for different people. To build trust as a leader, you need to figure out what yours is. Try using this exercise: Think of a recent moment when you were not trusted as much as you wanted to be. Maybe you lost an important sale or didn’t get a stretch assignment. With that moment in mind, do something hard: Give the other person in your story, let's call them the "skeptic," the benefit of the doubt. Assume that your skeptic’s reservations were valid and that you were the one responsible for the breakdown in trust. If you had to choose from our three trust drivers, which would you say went wobbly on you in this situation? Did your skeptic feel you were misrepresenting some part of yourself? If so, that’s an authenticity problem. Did your skeptic feel you might be putting your own interests first? If so, that’s an empathy problem. Did your skeptic question your ability to execute a plan? If so, that’s a logic problem. Now stand back and pick three or four similar interactions that stand out to you. Do you notice a pattern? Sharing your analysis with a close friend or colleague can be clarifying — even liberating — and will help you test your hypothesis. This conversation alone can be a powerful way to rebuild trust. When you take responsibility, you reveal your humanity (authenticity) and analytic chops (logic) while communicating your commitment to the relationship (empathy). And once you identify your "wobble," you can take steps to overcome it. — Adapted from "Begin with Trust," by Frances X. Frei and Anne Morriss.
