Yona of the Dawn Chapter 12
The Valley that The Voice of God Calls
Enter Ik-Soo and (more officially now) Yoon! Previously Soo-Won rejected the gods in favor of the power of the people, establishing an ongoing theme of gods/heavens vs. humans + old ways vs. new.
"I want the power of people, not god"
"I will restore the Kingdom of Kouka to the strength and glory it possessed...anything that stands in my way...even the heavens...will be crushed"
Tumblr media
Now–through Ik-Soo, the subject of priests, and the prophecy–we get more about these topics. Ik-Soo presents himself as someone who shares the voice of god–who knows all that is happening and will happen in the world–with the people. In learning more about why the priests were kicked out of the palace temple and arrested or executed, Yona is told that the priests were once deeply involved in political matters with "an authority even the king couldn't overrule," meaning they could pretty much do anything and justify it as "the wrath of god." Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
Tumblr media
We’re told Soo-Won's father was focused on expanding Kouka and perceived the priests as a threat to that goal and the crown's power in general, so he got rid of them. Is the expansion of Kouka by annexing other countries' territory a good thing or a bad thing?
As with the once authority of the priests, this information is presented somewhat neutrally rather than ascribed a moral position. Interesting! As it is, Ik-Soo is seen as "good" while Soo-Won and his father are more aligned with "bad," but they are also clear individuals not representative of entire groups. Arguments both in favor and against their point of views and actions are easily understood. Right now this feels more like an exploration of an idea instead of a definitive stance, but we shall see where it all goes.
Expansion of Kouka's territory and power seems like a good thing for Kouka but that does not necessarily mean it is morally  good. And the tangled history of priests and war (and what we haven't learned yet) has led to a country in which "the towns are packed with poor people" and "a few folks in the capital are the only ones who're well-off." Things are not good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This history lesson comes from Yoon, whose resentment of royalty and nobility is something he takes out on Yona. But though ashamed of her ignorance and saddened by the state of Kouka, Yona takes Yoon's criticisms in stride and actively seeks out the knowledge she lacks.
Ik-Soo and Yoon's personalities and characters are made very clear to the reader through their words and actions–this is a very good introduction to them–and likewise, Yona's character and growth are made clear through hers. After her symbolic death, she is like a small child learning about the world for the first time. Her tiny world was shattered and now she's learning about the larger world that her father and her status kept from her.
Tumblr media
Along with death/rebirth, the hair symbolism also continues for Yona. Cutting her hair was like a rebirth and an establishment of distance from Soo-Won and her past. But as Hak notes, she is still holding on tightly to the hairpin–she is surely growing but hasn't fully let go. She also can't completely shed how her past and upbringing shaped her. She crossed over to a new world but is bringing some baggage!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And speaking of Hak, their dynamic continues, but with their near-death experience and all that has happened, that dynamic comes with an increased closeness and care. Yona's expression of that closeness and care gets to Hak, but she remains oblivious to his feelings. But even if she doesn't get things on the romantic end, Hak is intensely important to her and part of her goals.
"I need you right here with me"
"I wanted to live. I wasn't going to let anyone take away my life, or Hak's. That's all I wish for right now"
(they are also just adorable here)
Tumblr media
Seeds of a larger goal to help Kouka and its people have been planted, but for now, Yona has shifted from barely surviving to wanting to live and her focus is on preventing the death of another loved one. Like Soo-Won, she rejects god in this moment. As she has decided what she wants, she does "not see much point in asking god" what her path should be.
Tumblr media
However, as Ik-Soo states–for Yona, "living means calling up a storm that will shake Kouka to its very foundation." Her "burning blood...can't be controlled"–if she is to live, she cannot live a normal life. There is something inherent to her that makes it impossible; her very existence will cause change. So along with Yona's personal goals, there is a larger fate being established for her.

Chill reading update - juggling all my holds on queue at the library
Various things over the years have really decreased my ability to sit down and churn out in depth analyses. Partly due to my current job, and volunteering in three local organizations that I am passionate about. And really trying to keep my brain from burning out on the news.
The point of my meta aren't overtly political but if you read me over the years, you can likely glean some aspects of where I fall on the spectrum. I have deliberately pulled back a lot of spending outside of the necessities since November 2024. Another effect of this has been my increased use of my local library. I'm still supporting local bookstores by purchasing manga here and there, now I'm really taking advantage of how many books are available through the library and celebrating that books I'd only dreamed of in my youth are readily available.
With my increased library use I've been reading the following series:
Witch Hat Atelier - read through volume 12. I love this series and it got heavier faster than I'd anticipated. I'm a little nervous about the upcoming anime adaptation. The art really lends itself to the page! Not surprisingly, my two favorite characters are Olly and Agott. The entire cast is amazing but yeah I have a thing for anal retentive work-a-holics with dark hair. Looking forward to picking up volume 13 soon.
I was at my local anime con a week ago - I made sure to pick up some art from the artist's alley. Turns out everything I got was from the series! A wooden charm with all the girls and two acrylic ones of Agott and Olly. I also got a Coco riso print and a beautiful Qifrey as well.
Tumblr media
I also got a picture of a Qifrey cosplayer with a brush buddy on their shoulders! So cute! I was expecting more people to be involved in the series or more cosplayers but only saw the one all three days.
We'll see how this series plays out in the greater fandom community when it gets an anime. Compared to the standard popular shounen, it really might be pushing people to really think about grey areas and how one finds a purpose in life. I got sucked in since I love me morally grey areas, personal growth and development and questions about using powers for good or not.
Honey Lemon Soda - read through volume 6. I've watched the anime which was good. They skipped a few manga chapters here and there. The series really speaks to my bullied middle school self, who struggled to find footing in high school. And I didn't get a fresh start since the same people were still there. It is that classic by the book plain Jane girl with the flashy bad boy but somehow keeps it fresh. I think being in Uka's head and the struggle to learn new habits while being true to your best self is difficult in your teen years. It likely is a relatable tale for a lot of readers young and old.
Yona of the Dawn - I'd read through about volume 20 several years ago. Life got busy, and I got sucked in the Golden Kamuy with no brain space for anything else with my busy work schedule. I'm now up to volume 29. It is a great series - the character development is solid and rewarding as they navigate difficult situations. The continued focus to always keep the revolving cast fresh as well as having a lot of women playing key roles through the stories just makes it such an enjoyable read.
Yona - amazing. Hak - amazing. Yun - amazing. Gija, Sinha, Jae-ha and Zeno - amazing. For secondary cast members I've grown to love Riri, Tae-jun and Tae-u and we cannot forget the Earth tribe general Guen-tae and his bubbly wife Yun-ho.
I'm chugging along, reading about 4-5 volumes per check out. For some odd reason the library has few copies of the volumes from around 25-mid 30s on the shelf.
Nina the Starry Bride - read up to volume 8. This is my guilty pleasure read. I watched the anime and have been reading the manga to get further into the story. I do enjoy it - don't get me wrong, but I don't get Nina and Az. Sure Azure is a total dreamy ideal hot guy - yet their initial romance didn't do it for me. They barely knew each other and somehow fell for each other. There is no sweet build up or payoff for them; they defaulted into wanting each other. My controversial take is that a Nina-Sett endgame would be a better payoff. That is a relationship that actually required investment!
However, Sett is also such a trope-filled dumpster fire of a person that really Nina should not do the emotional labor of a trained therapist. I'm interested to see where it goes but let's just say I very well may have further complaints about how it plays out. Yet, I'll keep up with it because it is such a good series for fluffy, candy, political drama shoujo romance. I also really like the style, it's a bit more on the minimal side and gives the panels space to breathe as opposed to the sheer shoujo-ness of something like Honey Lemon Soda.
Yuwu - not a manga, but the meatbun series that I enjoyed reading as a fan-translation. I have strong opinions on 2ha - some of them positive, some very negative. Yuwu was much more what I wished 2ha would have been. Yeah, there are still some very cringe plot points in the story and meatbun really know how to write terrible humans being horrible to other humans. However, when I first read about Murong Lian in the early chapters and noticed that meatbun put him the linernotes/footnotes, I knew he was going to become important even though he'd been introduced as a shit individual. That investment in waiting to see what his role would be paid off. This is directly due to the fact that I am a sucker for pretty boy characters who are bitches. Or really just men who are bitches. Plus, the fact that Murong Lian, "Greed" plays up being a bitch to his advantage. I also really liked Jiang Fuli as they made up 2 of the 3 "poor" traits of Chonghua, as "Wrath". I'm up to volume 4 on with a physical book which makes for a more comfortable read. I'm doing it all for Murong Lian. Mo Xi and Gu Mang are fine - I'm all here for a chain smoking bratty bitch. That's it for now. Doing my best to juggle various series as I put holds on them and wait for pick up.

LITERALLY NONE OF THE INFORMATION IN THIS POST IS CORRECT
first of all, dungeon meshi isn't released bimonthly? it ran in harta, a magazine which, while originally bimonthly changed to a monthly schedule w two hiatuses a year in february 2013, a full year before dungeon meshi began publication in february 2014. if dungeon meshi really was published bimonthly, it'd finish publication in 2030, and it should go without saying that that isn't the case bc it finished last year.
second of all, WEEKLY PUBLICATION IS NOT THE FUCKING INDUSTRY STANDARD, esp not in the shoujo, josei, and seinen (which is most relevant bc it's the one dungeon meshi belongs to btw) demographics. (for the uninitiated there are four main manga demographics which each target a diff age+gender group, shonen is targetted at tween/teen boys, shoujo is targetted at the general idea of girls, seinen is young men, and josei is the general idea of women, seinen, and shonen tend to draw a line between themselves but shoujo and josei tend to bleed into each other and josei can err towards more of a subsection of shoujo than its own thing, also worth noting that there's a significant overlap between shoujo and seinen which is why shoujo will be used as a point of comparison more than shonen will). once or twice monthly publication schedules are far more common. while there are a lot of weekly manga magazines and they appear in every manga demographic, the vast majority are in shonen, and thus not that relevant to the discussion at hand bc it should be obvious that there's a p big difference in quality concerns between manga targeted at 12 year old boys and manga targetted at actual adults (big disclaimer that this is not a knock on shone and my all time favorite manga is a shonen series goes here). also, a series running in a weekly magazine doesn't necessarily entail it having a new chapter in every issue, the number one example i can think of off the top of my head is the current state of one piece which publishes a few chapters and then takes a week off.
apart from harta, a lot of other seinen magazines run on a monthly schedule, such as young ace (publisher of bungou stray dogs) and its digital counterpart young ace up (publisher of the summer hikaru died), monthly birz (publisher of rozen maiden), and monthly big gangan (publisher of the manga adaptation of the apothecary diaries). as do magazines catering to other demographics, off the top of my head i can point you to THE shoujo magazine of all time, hana to yume (publisher of yona of the dawn, fruit's basket and kamisama kiss) which publishes twice monthly, shoujosei magazine cookie (publisher of nana) which publishes bimonthly, monthly shoujo magazine lala (publisher of ouran high school host club, natsume's book of friends, and snow white with the red hair), and the shonen magazine monthly gfantasy (publisher of black butler and toilet bound hanako kun). harta isn't fucking special for its publishing schedule.
now, we move to the statement "Imagine Dungeon Menshi qualify manga as a rule not the exception" and i'd like to ask the class what it's called when you lump an entire medium from a specific country together and dismiss it as low quality slop (oh but i guess this one good one is an exception)? that's right! racism and xenophobia! as someone who, unlike op who, from an inspection of their blog, seems to only have interacted w dungeon meshi and no other japanese or even east asian in general media, has actually read other manga, i caqn confirm that this is wildly untrue. followers will note that i've spent the last several months pointing out the similarities between dungeon meshi and the apothecary diaries (or more specifically, their protagonists laois and maomao) so that's the obvious comparison to make as i guarantee you if you liked the one you will probably like the other, but i can rattle off at least 10 other manga of an equal quality writing wise and why they are as such off the top of my head (which i will do under a cut as i value your dash space and didn't realize how long of a tangent that'd be, and if you don't want to read all that but are willing to just trust that i know what i'm talking about, let's keep going).
now that you've scrolled down and have decided to read yona of the dawn or have decided to just take my word for it, back to the specific manga at hand. i find it incredibly insulting to ryoko kui to boil the quality of her work down to her schedule and not her own talents as a writer. a monthly schedule doesn't necessarily mean work will be good quality, fucking black bird, one of the trashiest manga i've ever had the displeasure of contact w, ran on a monthly release schedule. and, vice versa, running on a weekly schedule doesn't necessarily lower a manga's quality, weekly manga include chainsaw man, kaguya sama love is war, and goodnight punpun, all of which are widely beloved award winning series.
tl;dr not how the manga industry works, there's a decent amount of dungeon meshi fans who've never touched any animanga before, actively look down on it, and thus feel the need to justify why they like this one specific series by making sweeping statements about the creative output of an entire country bc of it.
ultimately, while it is the instinct of my fellow seasoned otaku to point and laugh before looking at the 56k+ notes from ppl who actually believe this and begin to slowly die inside contented only by the knowledge that you know better, i'd like to ask you if you've ever made a sweeping statement abt the mecha genre while having only seen evangelion, or abt mahou shoujo while only having contact w madoka magica, or visual novels with doki doki literature club, or actually said anything generalizing shoujo manga as just romance, in which case you are no better and it's important to remember that anyone can fall victim to this line of thinking fairly easily as long as you remain averse to trying new things
also it's shocking that almost 57k ppl were willing to take the word of someone who can't even spell the title correctly as an authority. i'd usually let this one slide but i really can't when in combination w everything else there's it's not 'menshi' there's no n it's spelt meshi.
if you've made it this far read yona of the dawn you'll like it
first there's my dearly beloved, source of my blog url yona of the dawn, a long running shoujo action adventure series w a mature approach to worldbuilding and fantasy politics (sigh. which is similar to ryoko kui's approach if that sweetens the pot enough to get the most widely beloved still-running shoujo series some eyes from non-shoujo readers), then there's my all time favorite manga, black butler, which despite its piece of shit anime adaptation and rocky first few volumes caused by originally being allotted a short run as a comedy manga which then got allotted more chapters due to positive feedback until eventually gfantasy just decided to let yana toboso loose to do whatever she wanted for as long as she wanted, which ultimately lead to a slow burn mystery series w supernatural elements and some of the most precise foreshadowing i've ever seen leading up to a twist that is shocking regardless. there's goodnight punpun, an incredibly insightful coming of age seinen series w gorgeous art and a fascinating character study, there's nana, a shoujosei (its demographic is hotly debated) drama w a v mature view on interpersonal relationships, there's 7 seeds a post apocalyptic shoujosei (it switch magazines mid-publication) w several different storylines happening concurrently and a massive web of 35 different characters w complicated relationships which all manage to be strategically and expertly balanced (and a v bad anime adaptation which ruined everything), there's the summer hikaru died, a seinen bl horror series with stunning visuals and an incredible sense of tension and atmosphere abt a boy in conservative small town japan w a longtime crush on his best friend who sounds and acts and looks like himself but has been replaced by... something... that came from the mountains. there's chainsaw man, a shonen action series all about autonomy control and the lack and violation thereof, there's the rose of versailles, an incredibly culturally important historical fiction shoujo manga which revolutionized and shaped manga as we know it, natsume's book of friends, a supernatural shoujo series about a boy who can see yokai w an incredibly compassionate and empathetic outlook on the world, kaguya sama: love is war, a hilarious seinen romcom w a complex view of teen relationships and class dynamics based on one of japan's oldest folktales, and finally snow white with the red hair, a fantasy shoujo series w a vividly immersive world (and a special attention paid to food which readers of this post might find appealing.
“Omg dungeons menshi is so good! The characters and the worldbuilding and the art and the hu—“
It’s because the author had TWO MONTHS between publications instead of the usual week. 8X the amount of time to plot her story and see where she had been and where she was going and figure out how best to get there. Imagine if this was the industry standard instead of the crushing gears of weekly publication which grinds the minds, bodys, and souls of mangaka to dust until there is nothing left. Imagine Dungeon Menshi qualify manga as a rule not the exception. Imagine stories that did not destroy their creators. Imagine—

Prologue
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/KlZczXN
by EvanlynLifemercy
It began with two teenagers who became close friends and then fell in love during their years in high-school. One of them was Liv Addams, gorgeous girl from a well-off family. The other was Theron Gavrila, a handsome but a bit clumsy boy with quite the proclivity for getting into various kinds of trouble.
They faced a lot of obstacleson the way to their “Happily Ever After”.
They eventually got married, happily surrounded by close friends and family members, and had a beautiful daughter soon after.
Eleven years went by and their little family very unexpectedly expanded.
The Gavrilas welcomed a new daughter in their lives, Theron's niece, when his brother and sister-in-law died in a car accident, leaving their baby behind. And then, just a few weeks after the adoption was finalised, Liv found out that she was pregnant again.
And then, Theron and Liv became the parents of septuplets. All girls.
And the peace had never returned to the House Gavrila again.

12, 17, 21? (sorry if its too late)
no worries anon!!
12. Do you have any cute sketches or doodles you especially like?
Tumblr media
eoh to be a funky guy dancing in the rain
17. Are there any pieces that didn’t work out? Do you think you’ll ever return to them?
lots!! I'd say at least 40% of the stuff I start is stuff I don't finish, more than half if we count my sketchbook. you still learn a lot from art that you don't necessarily finish, so it's not a problem, but it can haunt me sometimes fdjfkd. I do want to revisit some, like the Mortis family as one of those awkward Christmas photos with a goth kid because that makes me laugh
21. Did you return to any old fandoms or inspirations this year?
oh yeah, a surprising amount!! for example I ended up reading recent chapters of a manga I was super into when I was 16, Yona of the Dawn, which it turns out I still love. and when I was in quarantine I rewatched Your Lie in April, sobbed at all the same parts that made me cry at 14, and thought of like 15 things I wanted to draw which I,,, also didn't finish,,,, but yeah. what is taste if not your middle school self persisting eh
