Steve Murphy: Oh definitely the old Lone Ranger television show. After that Steve always knew he wanted to be a cop, but that “hero cowboy” image never left him. He wants to help people, and have friends like Tonto! And maybe ride cool horses too! In his ideal world it’s just him and his super-intimate bestie/partner, going around restoring justice to lawless places.

Donald Pierce: This is sort of a two-part, because I think as a kid the most formative media for him was absolutely X-Men comics, and Wolverine, specifically, shaped his image of masculinity and what a man should be (and also, what an ideal male partner looks like…!). *But* Pierce also watched Clueless during a sleepover with his high school girl BFF, and the character Christian made him feel so many things; this is someone that got to be gay with no repercussions, who got to stay friends and go shopping and be sassy with the pretty popular girl, and also got to be tough and masculine and heroic when the situation called for it! It seemed like an awesome life, but so unattainable and embarrassing to want that he tries not to think about it. He hasn’t watched Clueless since, but it’s still lodged deep in his subconscious.

Cap Hatfield: When he was a kid his mom used to tell him fairy tales to soothe him to sleep, and the one that stuck around in his head the most was Little Red Riding Hood. Except, he never knew for sure if he was supposed to relate to the woodsman, the wolf, or the girl – when he ran around the woods with Jim and his brothers he’d pretend to be all of them at different times.

Clement Mansell: The Cat Stevens song Father and Son made Clement cry *so* many times as a kid. It’s stuck in his brain forever, and he sometimes fantasized about his dad singing it to him if he found him again. Also, when Clement was googling this song one day he ended up running across the Russian film Father and Son, about a father and son who live together and love each other so deeply it becomes borderline incestuous. He… really, really likes this one too.

The Corinthian: I think Corinthian *is* the formative media.

Eli Klaber: Some Like it Hot! This one is a bit of an anomaly because Klaber would’ve been in his late 20’s when it came out, but I think this was still *very* formative for him. A man who crossdresses and is deemed beautiful and desirable enough to be pursued by a millionaire who still considers him a real woman even after he finds out?? Yeah, this changed Klaber’s brain chemistry forever.

Ty Shaw: For Ty, it was the Boxcar Children. Even though his mom was *technically* in the picture, he and Abby had to learn to be independent real fast, and they both latched onto this series because it made independence and abandonment feel a bit like an adventure. And he especially really liked how all the kids took care of each other and make their own home. (Ty always stops reading before they go to live with their grandfather, that part always takes away the magic for him.)

Quinn McKenna: You’d think it would be some fast-paced action movie featuring buff 80’s superstars, but no, Quinn found his dad’s copy of Battle Tactics of the Western Front: The British Army's Art of Attack, 1916-18, by Paddy Griffith and was hooked ever since.

oh you- you knew what you're doing. another installment of these awesome asks again. aka I can't shut the fuck up about my son...

Justice: How does Rook feel about the circumstances that led to them leaving their faction? What does returning feel like?

What point of the time are we talking about because there are many of such circumstances that accumulated prior to what happened and since we’re stepping into heavy HC territory I need to elaborate first.

First of all I don’t believe Shadows concentrate in Minrathous only, it makes absolutely no sense. And while it is confirmed in game that there are “local” Shadows, I firmly believe the revolutionary cells are scattered across the Imperium, gravitating, aside from the capital, to larger cities, such as Nessum, Vyrantium, Neromenian, (formerly maybe Ventus). Each of such cells is organized differently, has their own leaders, and consists differently racial wise. It is possible to “transfer” but no one in their right mind wouldn’t just go from Minrathous to Nessum and be like yolo (that screams de Riva backstory to me) and it will have the rammies.

Lucius transferred to Nessum after the breakup™ (aka about 2-3 years prior to the events of Veilguard) out of multiple different reasons, but he felt mostly very melancholic and dramatic at the same time. Despite the breakup™ mostly happening quietly and on more or less good terms, it was physically painful to be around the base sometimes. It spurred him into action more than necessary, made Lucius more restless than before out of guilt and need to “prove” himself with said actions. He needed to reset his boundaries too and clear his head. Looking back on it he would probably say he was a bit overreacting, but at the same time it was the right thing to do. He’d say it was his decision, but mostly Mae suggested he redirects that vigor elsewhere.

He had built himself quite a reputation prior that point of time and it was a rocky start but he rubbed off on Nessum Shadows eventually and that was one of best times of his life actually. That, in turn, allowed him to operate within the city eventually with enough knowledge to pull off what he pulled off.

He’s not particularly remorseful about what he did, actually there are crumbs of pride about the scale of things (nepo ego). Especially concerning the freed slaves, which always did bring Lucius enormous morale boost. And, of course, exitus acta probat. In retrospect, Luc’d admit that was spontaneous (and with a bit of flair), but that’s how he operates when things need to be decided quickly. His only true regret would be putting other Shadows at continuously higher risks as before.

He probably wouldn’t let himself be “exiled”, but Mae and Dorian did take the matter in their hands personally as he was this close to ruining his anonymity. And since Luc doesn’t take well of being de-anoned, not generally, not amongst Shadows (last time he did, the breakup™ happened, okay? Baby’s traumatized), he had to comply.

It was…not easy. Luc contains such conflicted emotions over practically abandoning a good chunk of his life that he devoted to the cause due to a single “mistake”. Being away again, removed from what he wanted to do. Watching things go on without him. His alias as Mongoose had to go ever since, and he actually quite misses it.

It has to be yet another "him" from scratch: another name, another story, another lie to settle in for the vague best.

As for the return, it felt…shallow.

Not only because he has to pretend to be this silly purple acting “Rook”, but it’s because it feels similar when you’ve been away from your hometown and you come back to it changed.

Yes, there’s Viper, but Tarquin is no longer a rookie (good for him actually), there are mostly new faces at the base, some of the ones he knew are nowhere to be seen. Things are not where, not as they are supposed to be. Neve walks him around explaining things like he’s a newbie who’d never been at a job, but he has to play along. This time he actually quite hates it, there’s only this amount of stupid he likes to be perceived as.

He doesn’t feel particularly welcome, not in a significant way at least, maybe only by a few people including Ashur, but each of them still encourages him to stay away for now. To focus on fighting the gods. They have things settled, under control, stable without him. Yes, there are some chunks of good he still might do, eventually helping here and there, but that feels insignificant, he can’t participate in the community he felt part of for so long in a meaningful way, in a way he wants to participate.

This is such an unexpected alienation that makes him both numb and a little bit bitter too. While part of Lucius is happy things are going well and the cause is not lost, other part of him feels too removed from it now after a year, especially seeing Neve being so active on it as an informant. (Forgetting that’s her role as a detective and she’s been on it for as long as him. But she, unlike him, doesn’t have to make public appearances and mask THAT MUCH, but does he care about it? Of course not. And Neve never “left” nor was forced to, so.)

He does, of course, still do things through his connections and partially anonymously, but it feels not enough and he inevitably misses people (they share that same sense of loneliness with Ashur actually, will elaborate one day).

There’s some unresolved underlying tension between him and Viper, which does not help even if they are happy to see each other while staying 5ft away from each other due safety reasons. It does absolutely not help the situation too because “I’m fine”, this is fine, everything is fine and instead of a proper talk they waltz around each other very carefully pretending they moved on (does Lucius entertain that thought? NO.)

The weight of his own nostalgia does quite a disservice to Lucius, it makes him feel out of place in his own faction, doubt his own conviction - does it now stem from good intentions or ultimately not - and he drowns in those doubts. So much he does not realize how his help is actually, crucially needed when it matters.

okay my official opinions on the‏‏‎ ‎endings for the‏‏‎ ‎repurpose‏‏‎ ‎routes in the order in which i did them (and the ending to the overall story). spoiler alert: this definitely goes in my top 5 dating sims but that's not quite as big an honor as it seems because the amount of lesbian inclusive dating sims out there is truly just depressing.

overall story: kinda cheesy but also fun. i liked that our character actually got to do stuff for once. my biggest issue with Most dating sims is having a protagonist who just stands around and it was cool that we actually got to do stuff even if the big mecha god battle would have been a lot neater if there was like...gameplay. of any kind. this isn't a "visual novels are a lesser form of storytelling" thing it's an "anime style battles are just straight up not as satisfying in a written format" thing.

irene: in the camp Better Than I Thought It'd Be. she's the only character with no real tie in to the main story which made her flashback scene pretty unsatisfying in comparison but i thought it was kind of sweet that they stressed the platonic relationship between her and the player really was as important to her as a romance would be. even if we came across like we were lesbian baiting the audience.

ramon: listen he's fine as a character but i am SOOOOOOOO not attracted to him romantically at all. multiple times during his route i had to recoil because of how much I Wouldn't Fucking Do That. best part was the fact that we got to canonically get him (a cis man) pregnant because of demon biology. that's awesome.

noel: i still only like him in a strictly platonic way but i really do like him a lot. he's really such a sweetie pea. i like how many references were made to the fact that he used to be a girl in a genderfluid way. he will be one again one day...fandom didn't even need to genderfuck your white boy this time he did it to himself

kalei: sweet....also not attracted to him in a romantic way but i love his positivity and the fact that the mc is the fighter between the two of them. very niceys.

mitts: also better than i thought it'd be!! her early routes really didn't do her justice tbh i really liked seeing her leading the charge to reform utopia and getting more glimpses into her past. really sweet she definitely came into her own with this update

dj: had cute elements but also disappointed me in some ways...i knew their pronouns had been changed to he/they instead of just they/them and i was fine with that but they kept calling him a man which i didn't expect and was kind of weird. i guess nonbinary people can call themselves men that's fine but i don't know why the change was made in the first place. also the issue of them treating you more like a friend than a partner persisted sometimes. i like them enough as a character that i still had fun though.

rosita: REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD!!! my goodness!!! PINK FEMMES AND GOTH BUTCHES ON TOP FOR THE REST OF ETERNITY!!!! it feels so silly to say a cutesy dating sim made me feel more butch but i just love the fact that we got a genuine femme for once i'm literally still riding the high. oh rosie i love you forever let's go on a milkshake date...

cheri: really cute :) i wish we had gotten to see her true form at some point. interesting that this is the only route where the angel that was our parent gets revealed. that combined with the fact that you have to do her route last and the fact that she can present as any gender for you just makes me feel more like if any of the routes is supposed to be the True Route it's this one which usually ticks me off with dating sims but i do like cheri so it's okay

faye/luci: a lot of it was really good i liked fighting alongside her and her encouraging you and the sweet bits with lilith but. okay i'm finally going to talk about the hordes thing. turning him into adam was a MASSIVE DOWNGRADE IMO. literally his best quality was that he was really funny and now he's not funny and goes around naked all the time. Sir. Put a Fucking Shirt On. i did not sign up to see this naked guy and his abs i want to see my wife. the polyamory thing doesn't bother me very much on its own i like that they navigated it to find a satisfying solution for everyone and this is the first dating sim i've ever played where you get to have a metamour but WHY IS HE ALWAYS FUCKING NAKEDDDDD.

thoughts on each of the characters’ families? sunil’s parents, russell’s dad, gail, cheep-cheep and grinka, penny’s relatives… idk if pepper or vinnie had any mentioned or shown.

Oh, oh, I do, in fact, have many thoughts on most of them at least.

Sunil's parents - they're great and I love them! Genuinely would like for them to have more scenes because they're awesome. It's quite unclear whether they knew the rest of Sunil's friends before they came to lps, but they do know Vinnie, which is always a plus in my book. I headcanon that they invite him to dinners pretty often and he really, really likes them, in fact, to them he is considered family, they treat him like their son. Sometimes he visits them even when Sunil's not there, just to chill, he even helps with chores often. He pretty much treats them as if they were his parents too. Their only bigger fault is that they made Sunil believe they wanted him to be a doctor, when in actuality it was just a thing they mentioned once or twice but Sunil being Sunil thought they were 100% serious and kept stressing about it. Only later it came out that while they thought he could be a doctor and would make a good one, it's not that they will pressure him to become one, it was just an option they thought he could consider, but nothing more.

Russell's dad - as I said somewhere before, I'm a big fan of Jerry and he has his own little spot in my mind :D. I admit, he was pretty annoying in his episode at points, but he also had really funny moments and the ending was pretty heart-warming. My love for him does stem mostly from how I headcanon him to be though, and that is: being really open at others and whenever Russell's friends come over he always has some cool stories that he is more than willing to share. Sometimes he embarasses Russell and makes him roll his eyes but he does love his dad, and all of his friends love him too. As a bonus, I think he keeps up with some of the modern or trendy things, not in the exact same way Russell or his freinds do, he just knows they exist and in what context.

Gail - I love her, askjdsjka I love all of them, but what can I say, she's super likeable, even if she had like what? 2 minutes of screen time? Probably not even that. But what she had I really liked, would have loved to see her again in the show ;-;. I headcanon her as the "cool older sister", she's kinda like Zoe just more mature in her choices and personality and I think she's also really supportive, towards Zoe and her friends too. Justice for Gail, damnit.

Cheep-Cheep - okay, so first of all, he honestly didn't have that much screen time either (still more than Gail though 😭), I mean, he was shown on the screen a lot, but a big chunk of it was when he was going to that unversity and there was no dialogue. Anyway, I don't actually have any stronger feelings for him, he's just kinda neutral for me. However, the way I see him is basically 1:1 how he is presented in those Wattpad fanfictions I keep referring to, because he's a lot in there. So if you want my interpretation of him - there you go.

Grinka - his name so similar to Minka, I realized it only upon seeing it written down, daaaamn. That's pretty cool actually. Besides that not much to say I suppose, he was the first monkey on the moon so that's pretty cool. I do however like his design, not even sure why, but he looooks good, slay.

Penny's relatives - liStEn I have soft spots for a lot of minor characters simply because they are from lps, and they are those kind of characters. Plus, their episode was great and had a nice message, I don't care how repetitive the "Your friends can also be your family" message is, it's super sweet and heart-warming and I'm a sucker for it. I am SO happy that the episode didn't go for the "Hmm my family doesn't really feel like family so I will just cut them off once again but my friends are my family so I'm happy!" direction, no, it went for "My real family is different than I expected and I don't always understand them but they are still my family as well as my friends and I'm grateful." As for the characters alone they would be rather neutral to me, if not for those two scenes:

Like look, they are so nice and cute. But especially this scene:

This just sold them to me, look how comfortable they are with everyone, I'm especially talking about Zoe just casually sitting on one of their heads. That's just so cute, and that episode was great. Plus, I like that although they were shown causing Penny distress it's not like they were villains of any sort who were doing it on purpose, they were actually really nice pandas, just different than she expected.

As for Pepper and Vinnie? Pepper I'm pretty sure never had any relatives mentioned. Vinnie... well, he's technically the same, except that not necessarily? There were those two situations that I remember by heart: once when he was trying to return to lps with Pete and when they were attacked by those dogs he called out "Mommy!" and then in the museum episode when he and Sunil were running around scared and Sunil pointed at that mummy guy and said "Mummy!" Vinnie was like "Yes, I want my mommy too." And like... maybe it's just complete coincidence, in fact, it most likely is, after all, that is something that characters sometimes say when scared, it doesn't have to mean anything, and mummy does indeed sound similar to mommy. But listen to this, because I have a whole theory on this.

So those are things that I remember from my biology classes back in high school so some things I might get wrong, but the point should be correct. Listen, animals in general use either of the two parenting strategies, I rememeber them being named after letters but I don't remember what those letters were. But what's important here is that reptilies as well as many other animals (but not mammals!) are more about quantity than quality when it comes to offspring. So, mammals for example (including humans) are more about having less offspring (like one or two) but they will take care of them for years - quality. Other animals, like lizards, do the opposite - make as many babies as possible but don't take care of them, just hoping that they will survive - quantity. Except since the eggs and then (if the eggs manage to hatch aka don't get eaten, destroyed etc) babies are from the very beggining left on their own most of them will die. Out of this huge number of potential babies most of them will not make it. And those that make it have to take care of themselves, there are no parents to do that.

Let's say that all those real-life rules apply to lps universe as well. So, in this scenario lizards and other animals that use the strategy I described don't know their parents - just like in real life, but the difference is that in lps unvierse animals are self-aware and have higher brain functions. They basically think in the same way that humans do, plus have emotions etc. Going from this, Vinnie knows he doesn't know his parents and has emotions about it. If we combine that knowlegde with him calling out to his mom in moments of fear what image does it paint? He knows he doesn't know his parents, but is aware that normally they are supposed to be there and be your support (and he is surrounded by mammals that do in normal scenarios have parents so that feeling might be amplified by that clear difference), that in turn makes him wish he had parents and so he instinctively calls out to them in moments of distress.

Do I really think that's what happened? Well, no, of course not. I highly doubt anyone working on lps ever had that idea and then they decided to use it just to throw in those two lines of dialogue that realistically very much might a coincidence and/or not supposed to mean anything. But technically there is nothing that denies that, and it lines up a bit too well with how lizards behave in real life if you know all that. So, just potentially, Vinnie canonically might have no parents (and a bunch of (dead) siblings).

But hey, that's just a theory, an lps theory.

It's hilarious and sad that all the 'leftist' (blagg) complaints about the 'leftists' and critiques of cancel culture and generational spite and what the hell are you even talking about 'taking resources from the queer community' and you're proposing to eat the doctor stuff comes down to in group out group thinking gaffs. And this is said and expounded upon and rolled out to tell young people hurt people and idiots this again and again in different specifics. And I'm just like can we go to the heart of this issue please can we start there. In school perhaps. That would be best. In group out group thinking - and the dehumanisation humans do along with it is the root of all evil, has killed billions of people, makes bullies think they're hot shit at school, and it's a fundamental human DESIRE. We're good, you're bad. We're awesome, you're shit. And so we can treat you like it. Oh because it feels so good. All CONSISTENT solidarity, justice, equality and peace is born only from denying that impulse, though I wonder if it is absolutely possible sometimes, at least we try to do a job of softening the boundaries of these groups, tamping down on our sadism and sense of superiority, and working on expanding our in-groups to include ideally all of humanity.

I just think it's extra embarrassing to have this crop up in a wing of humanity that proposes that all humans share a fundamental dignity and should be treated as such and having to endlessly address out-group rhetoric in its endlessly regenerating new forms by saying 'its wrong to dehumanise people' (though the argument more often goes: you've got the wrong guy, idiot, which I suppose works on the short term). I wonder then whether right wingers have to deal with people repeatedly starting to feel too empathetic towards the 'bad ones' and being forced to stamp that out every year.
