I have to be basic and go with Slaughterhouse 5. Something about the line of "Billy Pilgrim has become unstuck in time" always gives me chills, and I love the use of repetition through out the story (I mirrored some of that style in one of my longer fics).

I do also enjoy Breakfast of Champions, and I've been meaning to read some more of his work this year (Sirens of Titan is on my tbr for obvious Tralfamadorian reasons).

Also, it's not Vonnegut PER SE but essentially a synopsis of his writing workshop - but I also really enjoyed Pity the Reader.

Dean Winchester, Angel Hunter had a nice ring to it. It was the kinda title that had people clapping him on the back in hallways and begging to hear stories from his hunts. Huntin' angels was no easy work but Dean made due, and he was damn good at his job. There was no angel he couldn't put down, no hunt he couldn't handle. That was until he got his latest assignment, the seraph: Castiel. What starts as just another hunt turns into something much more when Dean learns that Angel Intelligence wasn't just keeping an eye on Heaven... Heaven was keeping an eye on Dean.

Post 15x18, Cas is both touch starved and touch sensitive, and the sensory overload of the world can be a bit too much. He craves Dean's touch, but resists asking for it. A really beautifully written, metaphor laden examination of chronic pain, disability, trauma and the physicality of the body and nebulous presence of mind. All wrapped up in an abundance of love and devotion. Absolutely gorgeous.

Prayer to a False God by K_A_Mindin (@katerinaalianovamindin, art by @gaytedlasso for @spnbangbang) It’s been two years stuck in the Empty, where the Shadow showed him his worst mistakes over and over again. Then he's brought back, to Jack and to Dean, and silence continues to rein, the unspoken acknowledgement of the confession lingering in the air...until Cas decides he needs to stop letting silence rule. Alongside the emotional pull of this thread, the D/S dynamics which grant Dean the permission to speak his truths, through prayer, and through physical release, are a joy to behold.

i like your shoelaces (thanks! i stole them from the president) by @you-cant-spell-subtext-without is a brilliantly funny take on Misha's "Dean is a custodian in a fast food restaurant. Castiel is the President of the United States" fic prompt from a convention, told through the narrative hook of a Cinderella story. Delightfully tongue in cheek, and laugh out loud, this is currently a wip but a must read to bring joy to your inbox each update.

FROTUS by kathscradle takes the very same prompt but approaches it in a very well executed slowburn that says ok but seriously what if? My favourite thing about this fic is the importance of family, Cas being the widowed single parent of Jack and Claire, and Dean stepping up in his new role as step-Dad. Add in the slowburn relationship unfolding through long distance hyper-monitored correspondence, and all the national security matters at hand, this longfic gave my The West Wing/Scandal/Destiel brain a great big hug.

birthday candles by rhinestoneangels (almondrose/@pinknatural) is a super cute, ever so charming Dean's birthday ficlet in which Castiel's sister Anna drags him to a birthday party for a friend of hers who he has never met. He googles what to bring to a birthday party and settles on baking cookies...one fire later and fortunately, the firefighter who shows up to save Castiel from himself is very dreamy, and what a coincidence! It's his birthday, too….

I've also fallen down a rabbit warren of destiel and spn poetry, and I really really love this one by @whatladybird and this one by @eyelinerdean, @donestiel's incredible poetry gif edit series and I'm very excited to keep reading more on the @spnpoetryrenaissance blog. I still don’t understand the logic behind everyone urging guts to go on his own path and leave griffith after they rescued him, it annoys me to no end. It makes sense from a pushing-the-plot-forward standpoint but as in-universe logic i cant make sense of it. Casca saying if you want to be griffith’s friend and equal you should leave liiikkeee..….i dont think griffith gives a fuck about that anymore hes crippled!!???? The only explanation i could come up with is not so nice….and its that they dont care about making sense they just want guts out of the picture because it benefits them personally, like casca not having to share griffith with him anymore, and judeau maybe not having to see casca and guts together all the time? Idk it sounds mean so i dont want it to be that lol, but its like why is everyone acting like griffith lost all agency and doesnt get to have a say in who he wants in his life? why is everyone deciding for him knowing full well that's not what he would want? everyone knows how dependent his well being is on guts and yet….they dont care?

Just a heads up, it's my understanding that the term "cripple" or "crippled" is often considered dated and offensive these days when not being reclaimed, so it's probably better to say Griffith is disabled.

But anyway yeah I get what you're saying and I get why it can feel contrived. I've talked to other Berserk fans who have the same issue with these scenes.

But like I actually do think it makes sense both from a characterization perspective, and thematically.

Thematically everyone has to tell Guts to leave, because that's the consequence of the decision he made. And it does make sense imo because he did a very good job convincing Judeau and Casca that it's what's best for him and what he desperately wants and needs to do for himself and his own sense of worth etc. While they do theoretically have enough knowledge to realize that Guts doesn't need to strive to be Griffith's equal after he spent a year in a torture chamber because of Guts, it makes sense to me that that's not what they're thinking. They're not reading the story and picking up on the subtext, after all, they're just trusting what someone told them about his own goals without overanalysing it. Guts said he wants to pursue a dream the way Griffith did because he feels inadequate, and it makes sense to me that they take that at face value.

So to them it makes sense to think that Guts offering to stay and take care of Griffith isn't him realizing that the whole equality thing was bullshit, but him sacrificing his future potential glory because he feels like he owes Griffith.

Then on another level you do have those darker characterization notes that also, imo, make sense and help make it believable that Casca and Judeau would tell Guts to leave. Judeau has been trying to get Guts and Casca to hook up for a while now, he's personally invested in them having a relationship, and the two of them being in a relationship is contingent on them going off together without Griffith. We can deduce from a few clues that Judeu is invested in this because he doesn't feel good enough for Casca himself and he wants her to be happy, and he thinks Guts can make her happy.

So Judeau telling Guts to leave with Casca while he takes care of Griffith himself is basically Judeau making a sacrifice for Casca's sake, as well as thinking it's probably better for both Guts and Casca, based on what he knows about them. It's not better for Griffith, but his priority has never been Griffith, it's been Casca.

And Casca telling Guts to leave also fits their love triangle, and Casca's own jealousy and residual feelings for Griffith. Even if she could potentially put two and two together and realize that Guts genuinely wants to stay with Griffith, it makes sense to me that she wouldn't want to make that leap, because the three of them together spell jealousy, and if only two of them can be together without devolving into resentment, well, Griffith just demonstrated that he needs her the way she's always wanted him to need her, and Guts has his own dream to pursue, so this way she at least gets to have something she wants. And she can tell herself that Griffith will get over Guts, that Guts isn't good for Griffith anyway considering what happened, etc.

But yeah ultimately the reason they tell him to leave is because Guts made his bed and now he has to lie in it. So it is to drive the plot towards the Eclipse at the end of the day, but idk, it works for me. Both Casca and Judeau have their own priorities that aren't Griffith and Guts living happily ever after together, and those contribute to them telling Guts to leave, and setting off the Eclipse. I find it believable and interesting for the characters.

Love Me Undone

Hello everyone! The first chapter of my canonverse fic has now been posted to ao3! It is part of a series and the first part acts as a bit of a prolouge. You can read it here. The description for the main fic is below:

It's been quiet since Chuck's defeat; things have gone back to normal in the hunting world. Castiel has been out of The Empty for six months and Dean has taken his angel and found a nice little house to retire in. But where retirement might look good on paper, Dean struggles to adjust to this new life. When strange signs begin to show that something might be brewing on the horizon again, Dean is quick to jump right back into the fray, dragging Cas with him. After all, maybe all he needs is one last hurrah, even if it might kill him. He's not as young as he used to be, you know.

This fic is 100% complete and I will be posting a new chapter every FRIDAY!

I was scrolling hhawkeye's "tv stuff" tag because HELLO M*A*S*H SCRIPTS and then I was punched in the face by this reblog of that time Sunnyweebles had a Very Good Day on eBay and we won two scripts that spawned a multi-year project that ended with us building a collection of 187 scripts from 169 episodes (along with lots of outlines, arenas, revision pages, call sheets, casting sides, storyboards, and other misc. production paperwork).

Tombstone helped us raise over $7,000 for The Trevor Project

Red Meat helped us raise over $5,000 for World Central Kitchen

We still had so many scripts we did a third fundraiser and raised over $10,000 for RIP Medical Debt/Undue Medical Debt, which abolished $1,180,348.38 in medical debt for 621 people.

We thought we were done...then Kripke resurrected us:

Kripke sent us seven scripts (including his annotated "Lucifer Rising" director's script).

Thanks to @you-cant-spell-subtext-without we got two copies of Gotham Knights "Daddy Issues" from Natalie Abrams and James Stoteraux dm'ed the spnscripthunt Twitter offering scripts from the first and last episodes.

Thanks to sadiewit.bsky.social we got scripts from the first and last of The Winchesters from Robbie Thompson.

We raised $25,644.30 for RIP Medical Debt/Undue Medical Debt, which abolished $4,174,244.70 in medical debt for 3,678 people.

Unfortunately there aren't a lot of fics between Dean or Cas with Jensen or Misha's other characters. But here's one with Jensen's Soldier Boy that we've liked:

When his dad goes missing, Dean follows a trail that leads to a small town seemingly plagued by monsters in the nearby woodland. Motivated by the growing count of missing persons and tales surrounding a terrifying beast, Dean embarks on a hunt to investigate the mysterious forest. The last thing he is expecting to find is an enchanted castle with talking furniture and cutlery. It's straight out of one of those Disney movies Sammy used to make Dean watch when they were kids. But Dean’s life has never been a fairytale, not since that dreadful night when he was four. Now trapped within the fortress’s walls and with no way to contact the outside world, Dean turns his attention to finding a way to break the curse and free himself and the castle's inhabitants. Dean is certain this Beast, Castiel, is the source of the mess they’re all in. But he can’t shake the feeling there’s something more in those too-blue eyes and ferocious demeanor.
