The problem with divergent:

The 2010’s…often referred to as the dystopian era. After the rise of the film adaptation of ‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins we saw a plethora of young adult (YA) dystopian novels being published and adapted into films, the 2 most popular of the time being ‘The Maze Runner’ series  by James Dashner and ‘Divergent’ by Veronica Roth. Both of these adaptations were successful in their box office opening week with ‘Divergent’ making over $280 000 000 globally. 

Compared to ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘The Maze Runner’ I would argue that the writing and world building of ‘Divergent’ is lazy. 

The ‘Divergent’ series by Veronica Roth was no doubt a cultural phenomenon, I mean it was the time… everyone AND their mothers were obsessed with dystopian novels! However, despite the success ‘Divergent’ had in box office both the book trilogy as well as the film adaptations had encountered many challenges due to the writing of the book itself (I guess you could say).

The first challenge and most likely the one that is discussed the most is world building. ‘Divergent’ being set in a future dystopian world makes world building increasingly complex and difficult…it cannot be decided as you go along, it sort of needs to be thought out, I mean  the world that these characters live in is the reason why they live the way they do. The problems that the characters of ‘Divergent’ are only partially explained and alluded to, the reader doesn't actually know the full reason of why the characters are forced to live the way they do and any assumption or partial explanation that we were given in the first ‘Divergent’ is almost thrown out the window throughout ‘Insurgent’ and ‘allegiant’. Any reason that Veronica Roth had given us becomes increasingly muddled as we continue to read the trilogy.

When I read the first installation of the ’Divergent’ it was gripping and fast paced however as i went on to read ‘Insurgent’ the plot felt drawn out like it was never going to end. The change in pace made it feel like I didn't enjoy myself…it felt like I was staring at the pages of the book for endless amounts of time moving nowhere. The third installation and film adaptation ‘Allegiant’ was the complete opposite of ‘Insurgent’, ‘Allegiant’ felt too rushed almost with many important plot developments not properly explored nor explained. The inconsistency of the pace of both the books and the movies diluted the emotional impact of pivotal moments in the novels and movie series.

Not only was the pace of the novels and film adaptations inconsistent, the character motivations were inconsistent as well, and any character development was non-existent too. Despite captivating the readers with her bravery and complexity, Tris is often portrayed in a less relatable manner in the novels. Some characters lacked depth which made it hard for the audience to connect emotionally with them or feel any empathy for them. Side characters in the first book who were initially interesting, as the books continue, turn into stereotypes with a predictable storyline and no meaningful development whatsoever. 

Most of the challenges discussed above were only in the film adaptations because they were created in the novels. However the film adaptation did have its own set of issues. Despite the first film achieving huge success, the rest of the films were not able to achieve success to the same level. Once again key subplots and pivotal movements in the book were left out in the movie which (in my opinion) took the movie's potential emotional weight away. People always say that the books are better than the movies and in ‘Detergent’s case this is especially true, the film failed to capture the challenges that connected the reader with the books. The selection of actors and choices made by the director also influenced the adaptation's mixed reception. Although some actors were praised for the performance in the film others were criticised for not ‘capturing the essence’ of the character they played. Because of the ‘inaccuracies’ which led to apparent viewing inaccuracies the distance between fans and the original content grew.

Around the time that the last divergent movie installation was released the YA dystopian genre was tired and drained. Boredom and disappointment continued to grow within the fandom due to the lack of originality and depth compared to the earlier works of the genre.

 With numerous films in that same genre being released the audience grows tired of seeing the same thing all the time. Franchise fatigue can be argued to be the ‘Divergent’ franchises biggest enemy…and their biggest mistake being to attempt to split the last movie into 2 parts (Harry Potter franchise is to blame but that's a whole different thing). Because of franchise fatigue the second part ‘Allegiant’ was never released nor picked up again by a production company. 

For me the biggest disappointment of this trilogy is the ending. It was unsatisfactory and left many plot holes unsolved. The dissatisfaction of the novel's ending extended to the film adaptation which can be proved by looking at ‘Allegiants’ performance in box office. The ending was met with disappointment…it felt like a waste, we sat through all that just for Tris to die at the end? How could the ending not be met with major disappointment! 

The "Divergent" series, while it showed early potential and gained a lot of popularity, is now dealing with major obstacles that have impacted how it has been received as both a book series and a film franchise. Concerns about world-building, character growth, adaptation inconsistencies, franchise fatigue, and unsatisfactory conclusions have all played a part in shaping its varied reputation. Although the series made a mark on the young adult genre, its flaws showcase the challenges of storytelling in literary and cinematic mediums. As viewers look for engaging stories, the themes of "Divergent" can remind us of the significance of clear, profound, and emotionally impactful storytelling. Despite my numerous complaints about the franchise with the franchise, the franchise still has great qualities where it almost redeems itself.

Then, I realized the first anniversary of The Truth Is Out There, But So Is Love was approaching, and everything fell into place. “The fuck is all this?”

Levi asked as he stepped into the basement office. Over the past months, he’d grown used to the crampiness of the space he shared with Agent Zoë who — much to her credit — had been trying to keep things clean, even if chaotic. But what he stared upon right now was a different kind of chaos. Colorful chaos.

The document boxes and cabinets were covered in metallic serpentine coils, which spilled to the ground, painting it red, green, and yellow. The wall of newspaper cutouts had some joyful additions: a picture of an alleged alien head now had a tiny pink birthday hat over it, the severed arm that an article claimed to belong to a victim of the Jersey Devil held a little slice of cake over its hand. Dozens of purple balloons clung to the ceiling, trying to escape the havoc, their curling ribbons hanging so low one of them grazed at Agent Ackerman’s cheek. Levi pushed the strip away, only to have it prickling at his skin a second later.

“Tch. It looks like Party City took a dump in here.”

“I know, right??” The excited voice called from the other side of the room. Agent Zoë sat at her table, face turned to the opposite wall, exactly like the day they met. Her hair was chaotic as always, brown strands moving as she lowered her head to fiddle with something. Levi watched as his partner set aside a small box, and the smell of smoke mixed with something sweet diffused in the air. Hange put on a polka-dotted cone hat before swiftly turning her chair in his direction, smiling from ear to ear.

“Happy birthday, Levi!”

The agent frowned as he inspected the rainbow sprinkle cupcake she held out to him, especially the “1” shaped candle that topped it.

“I’m 32.”

He moved his gaze to her.

“And it’s not my birthday.”

“Well,” Hange started, reaching for his hand to give him the sweet treat “Since I don’t know your birth date, I figured we could celebrate your first year in the X-Files. It’s been exactly 365 days since you walked through that door for the first time.” There was a tinge of genuine warmth in her final words. The same warmth that he felt in his chest.

“The monkey case? It’s been one year already?” Levi asked, sincerely surprised.

“Yes!” Hange said, reaching for a desk calendar that was on one of the cabinets. She pointed at the date that was circled in red “July 26”.

When he was first assigned to work with Agent Zoë, Levi was counting the minutes to be done with the job and move on to the top floors of the J Edgar Hoover Building. Now, a mere year later, still buried in the basement floor, investigating all kinds of weird shit by Hange’s side, he couldn’t imagine himself doing anything else. Time flies in the X Files.

The sound of Hange cleaning her throat pulled him back to reality

“So, when is your birthday, by the way?” she said, feigning casualness

Silence.

“Come on, Levi! At least give me a clue.”

“Fine.”

Hange’s face lit up.

“It happened one time since we met.”

Hange’s smile melted into a hilarious betrayed scowl and Levi had to fight hard to maintain his nonchalant expression.

“Wow,” she said, with an exaggerated wounded look “Levi, you just keep unfolding like a flower.”

He couldn’t fight the urge to smile this time.

“I just don’t celebrate birthdays,” he explained, appeasing his partner “so I refrain from sharing this date with people. But if you’re really so curious, I’m sure you can find that information very easily.

“It wouldn’t feel right” Hange explained, shrugging as if she was ready to drop the subject, but then “That means you never had a birthday party?” she asked, bobbing her head to the side. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to!” she quickly added.

“My mom made me a few when she was alive, but I hardly remember any of them” Levi recounted as faded flashes of his mother lifting him from the ground and holding him above a colorful table to blow his candles invaded his mind. “There was one party my friend threw me. The red-haired friend, from the foster home, I think I told you about her once-”

“The one that was like your little sister.” Hange nodded, eyes fixed on him, waiting for his next words.

“Exactly. She bought us two handfuls of candy, I don’t even know where she got the money, probably beat some kids at marbles or something” Levi chuckled “Then she arranged them on the bed, in the shape of a birthday cake. It was a surprise party too, because it was nowhere near the right date.” He smiled, his heart full of love as he reminisced about his friend, and when he looked up, Hange had the sweetest smile on her face.

“Did you ever contact her?” “I planned to. We promised we would stay in touch. But as it turns out, the adults weren’t very keen on sharing the families’ information with a couple of kids. Over time I even forgot her name, I just have a vague memory of someone saying that it was also a flower”

“What flower??” Hange all but jumped on him to get the answer.

“Jesus! How should I know? I know fuck-all about flowers.”

Hange nodded, but Levi could see in her eyes that her mind was elsewhere.

“How about we just celebrate Christmas?” Levi’s proposition caught his partner's attention.

“I don’t do Christmas” Hange answered, puzzled.

“Me neither. Is the perfect middle ground, don’t you think?”

It really was.

Or so he thought when December 25 came and with it an invite to Hange’s apartment.

Levi dreaded he would find over-the-top decorations or — even worse — a bunch of guests with whom he would have to socialize. So when he crossed her door he was relieved to see that it was just her usual place, mess and all, with just a pizza box and one beer bottle awaiting on the small center table. The other bottle was in Hange’s hand, and she used it to point him to the couch, as she went on to feed her fish.

The movie this time was Hange’s choice, and Levi wasn’t surprised when the opening scene of Alien started playing on TV. He was surprised, however, to know why it was her favorite film.

“I like the fact that the cat survives.” She told him “Ripley goes through all that trouble to save Jonesy as she’s running for her life. Then the creature finds Jonesy in his cage and spares him. I think I like the fact that both the human and the alien had to act in a certain way, opposite of what one would think, and that made it possible for the cat to live. I think it means we’re not so different. Or that everyone is more complex than they appear.”

“Maybe it just means cats are fucking scary.”

She laughed, lightly kicking his foot.

As the final credits rolled, Hange propped herself up from the couch.

“I have something for you.”

When she came back from her room, she was holding something flat and rectangular, wrapped in green paper, with a delicate purple ribbon. Levi opened it to reveal a book.

He stared at the gift for a whole minute, knowing what it meant.

“If we don’t find her name in this one, there are four more, for Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.”

Levi gulped, trying to swallow the painful knot that was in his throat.

“We can go through it together.” Hange tried, then added, a few seconds later “Or If you don’t like it I can take it back. Anyway, Merry Christmas, Levi, or Happy non-Christmas, I don’t know” Hange chuckled nervously and stared at him expectantly.

“I think” Levi paused, taking his time to look Hange in the eyes “Happy Birthday is more appropriate.”

Levi patiently waited as his partner peered at him. Then squinted. Tilted her head to the side. Her eyes started to grow wide as realization dawned on her.

Hange gave him the most breathtaking smile, and suddenly Levi wasn’t sure what the best birthday present was.

Postwar Levihan

It's been three years since the war ended. Against all odds, Hange survived & lives with Levi. They found an abandoned cabin in a remote area near Liberio, miraculously spared as well as the bunch of trees that hides it from sight.

Day after day, they fixed up their new home as best they could. It’s not much but it’s their safe, shared home & it’s all that matters.

Once settled, none of them could stay out of the action. Hange works in what remains of Liberio, in a makeshift hospital occupying the ground floor of a half-destroyed building. They help treat sick or injured people several days & nights a week.

There isn’t enough room at the hospital so they managed to set up a lab at home where they can do some research, mostly about new medications or even prosthetics. Levi stays at home most of the time, taking care of the house, growing a vegetable garden, cutting wood & planting more trees around their cabin. In his glass house, Levi enjoys raising flowers, but he also sowed medicinal herbs for Hange’s experiments. Every once in a while, he goes to Liberio to help refugees, mostly children who lost their parents during the war.

Valentine's Day

A couple weeks ago, Gabi & Falco told Levi about Valentine’s Day, a tradition unknown on Paradis Island. As much as it seemed futile at first, Levi couldn't stop mulling over the idea.

After several days of wearying work, Levi convinced Hange to rest properly for once.

Sitting on the bed next to them, he takes a few moments to gaze at Hange’s sleepy face. He finds them beautiful, despite the burns. Or maybe he loves them even more because of these scars, a testament to their bravery. He’s so grateful they’re here with him, brightening his days with their cheerful, beaming smile, the very smile he fell in love with.

Meanwhile they sleep in on their day off, he busies himself getting tea ready for breakfast, packing some food & a blanket in a basket, slicing vegetables for the stew simmering in the pot over the fire. 

Levi is waiting for Hange in the hall while they put the bouquet of snowdrops he picked for them earlier this morning in a vase. They blushed & stammered a shy thank you when he drew it from behind the basket placed on his lap.

He promised himself today would be special. Nothing fancy, but a few hours for themselves without work or chores.

Hange would push his wheelchair along the paths nearby, blabbering about their research, asking him a million questions about the garden or the herbs he grows, about the pain in his leg. From time to time, they would lean down to kiss him on the cheek, giggling like a shy teenager. They would find a nice place to spread a blanket on the grass & enjoy their picnic. They would spend the afternoon watching clouds, Levi listening with fondness to Hange’s explanations about their shapes or how they form. When the sun would start to set & the breeze to be too cold, they would go back home & take a bath to warm themselves. 

Hange would stuff their face with the most delicious stew they ever tasted. They would settle with a contented sigh & a glass of wine in front of the fireplace, snuggled up against Levi under a warm blanket.

Levi would say he's not good with words. Levi would draw a little box out of his pocket & simply give it to Hange. Levi would gently slide the jewel on Hange's finger, not a proposal but rather a promise.

The promise to spend the rest of their lives together.
