“You are suspicious–good! That will keep you alive, especially in Riften. There are con artists abound.”
Dalamus leaned back into his chair, arms loosely crossed over his chest once more, and shrugged. “That said, I have little reason to lie to you. In fact, I could be just as suspicious–how do I know you are not going to turn me in as soon as you have what you want, hm? It is you who needs me, not the other way around, love. Right now, the offer stands at fifty septims, half payed up-front.“
Mithra listened to him talk, inclining her head at the suggestion she’d turn him in once they were done and scoffed. “If you truly thought I would turn you in, you wouldn’t have admitted so openly to being a thief. Doing so would be...” ludicrous, ” naive.”
“You look anything but.”
The Altmer leaned back in her own chair, hands resting in her lap. ”And believe me, I have absolutely no intentions of doing their job for them after the way they treated me today. If they cannot catch a thief in their own city, that is none of my concern,” she continued with a casual shrug of her shoulders.
When he mentioned a price for this ‘help’, Mithra pursed her lips slightly as she eyed him over again. “Before I agree to anything, I want to see what I’m paying for. There’s no point in hiring you if you can’t deliver,” she stated almost matter-of-factly. “Upstairs, through the first door you come to - that’s my room. The door is locked, but I assume that’s no challenge for you. What I want you to do is to go to my room, and retrieve what’s inside the footlocker by the bed. It’s a satchel with things we’re going to need, as well as your payment.”
What Mithra had refrained from saying, however, was that the footlocker had an enhanced lock, much trickier to break into than the one on the door, but she’d let him figure that out on his own.

The vampire smirked. This was getting interesting.
“Mm, stealing implies that the ledger would be kept. But, if such bothers you, perhaps it can be returned once you obtain the knowledge you seek. Call it.. ‘borrowing without permission.’ Either you describe the ledger to the would-be thief, or go with him to be absolutely sure. And as for finding said willing prowler…” He leaned forward, towards her, a glint in his eyes. “Darling, you are looking at the best.”
This whole situation was so surreal she wanted to laugh. No more than a few minutes ago had she been sitting alone, trying to conjure up results out of what felt like thin air, and now she was approached by a mer who claimed he would be able to solve her problems.
It was when he said she could go with him - Him, The would-be thief, that her suspicion began growing in the pit of her stomach and she narrowed her eyes at him slightly. She really had to use all her willpower to keep from scoffing or laughing.
“How do I know you’re telling me the truth? For all I know you could simply be a con artist,” she asked, inclining her head and idly shrugged her shoulder, looking him dead in the eye. “Why would you help me, and how much is this help going to cost me?”

Dalamus leaned back in his seat, arms crossed loosely over his chest as his eyes scanned the various papers. She was friendly. Respectful. Intelligent. In all honesty, it was surprising to hear that the Jarl had thrown her out. Could it be Maven had worked her.. repugnant charm on Laila again? Or perhaps the Jarl was simply in a mood.
“Laila is.. not the brightest,” he stated simply. “If she will not hand it to you, perhaps what you need is someone to take it for you, hm? Then you get your documents, and the Jarl is none-the-wiser. Everyone wins.“
At what he said next, the womer could only tilt her head and furrow her brows. “You mean steal it?” she said, her voice even and quiet. She seemed to ponder the idea for a moment, looking from him and down to her papers. Papers that would prove useless until she got her hands on the document in the city archives. Still, she didn’t like the idea of having to stoop so low to get what she needed. Surely there were other ways?”
“If I were to agree to such a thing, and I’m not saying I do, where would I even find someone willing to help me? Not to mention, how would I make sure they get the right ledger?”

Dalamus knew a fresh face when he saw one. Unlike the regulars of the town, she was not covered in filth or stinking of alcohol. Also unlike most, she seemed to be eagerly working.. on something. He attempted to get a closer look, but was not exactly silent about his approach.
“Do not trouble yourself overmuch, sera. I could not help but notice you are fairly new in town–my curiosity usurped my manners.” He sat in the offered chair, but made no move to take up any of the table space should she wish to continue her work. “It is not often I see Altmer in The Rift. What could possibly bring you to my.. humble town?” His eyes flicked to the pages she had been rifling through not moments before.
Mithra stopped shuffling her papers when the Dunmer seemed uninterested in the table, which suited her just fine. “Well, you’re correct on both accounts,” she said with a small smile. “I’ve only been in town for little over a day, and I’ve already experienced the Riften hospitality first-hand,” she replied, pausing slightly before she ran her index finger and thumb along the ridge of her eyebrow in frustration, “from the Jarl herself, no less.”
“I petitioned her to let me search the city archives for a set of documents I need for my research, and she had her trained lapdog throw me out on my ass. Since then I’ve been trying to make due with what I already have, but it’s... well, it’s not really working out,” she admitted, motioning to the piles of papers in front of her.

Today made for a prime example of your typical Skyrim springtime weather. It was a fine morning, when he left Solitude. A bit windy, certainly, and overcast, but otherwise pleasant. It had deigned to stay that way for most of his journey. It was the last half mile when the sky split and came pissing down with all it had.
On the bright side, it wasn’t snowing. Yet. That’d come after sundown, no doubt.
It was only a short walk from the coach to the inn, but it had left him drenched. He left his cloak on a hook by the door. More people trickled in for shelter from the downpour. Soon, seats would be a rare commodity. He’d better secure one now. There. A table with only one occupant, and a miniature library worth of paper littered around. Well, if he was going to sit out the weather, he might as well do so somewhere interesting. To be readily welcomed was a surprise, but he didn’t miss a beat.
“I need only a chair. You can keep the whole table. Rest assured–” He fabricated a brief, reserved smile, gesturing toward his eyes, “I can’t peek at your work.”
She stopped rearranging her papers to look up at him again as he spoke. It was rude to stare, she knew that, and she quickly averted her eyes. Between the initial glance she had given him and tidying up some of her mess, she hadn’t noticed anything different about him.
“Honestly, I’d gladly have let you have a look. It feels like I’ve read myself blind. I’d give just about anything for a second brain to pick right about now,” she replied with a small laugh, brushing a brown lock of hair behind her ear.
She didn’t want to bother him with her problems, so chose not to divulge any more than that at the moment. After all, he’d come over here to sit down, not to hear her prattle on about her research and future expeditions.

Open RP
Mithra sat in the back of the inn, notes, maps and journals filling the table in front of her to the point of overflowing. She kept going back over her own notes and comparing them to the maps over and over again and was getting more and more frustrated. Quickly swapping one journal fro another she skimmed through the notes until something caught her eye, and she moved the map to sit on top of the pages, the two sketches lining up perfectly. “Finally,” she breathed to herself and flipped open a third, mostly blank journal to fill in the blanks from earlier.
It was when she was nearly done that she noticed someone approaching her table, and she lifted her gaze from her papers to look them over. “Hey,” she greeted with a warm smile. “Need a place to sit? I can pack up my mess-,” she said and already began gathering her papers.

“It’s not that bad, is it?” Mithra asked as she followed the other woman down the unlit flight of stairs. As she caught up with Beck on the landing at the bottom, she immediately regretted saying it.

“ how did you find this place anyway?”
“The carriage I had hired on my first trip through this area lost one of its wheels, and I got bored waiting for the driver to repair it. I paid him in full and walked from there, ending up here,” she explained with a fond smile. The little clearing had a crystal clear lake in the middle, and flowers of all shapes and sizes scattered around.“Whenever I move through this area now, I make a point of stopping here. It’s peaceful, and I don’t think a lot of people know it exists.”
