I finally watched the first Gladiator film and my main take away, and I don’t think this was what Ridley Scott intended, was that I wanna fuck that crazy emperor.

I think the appeal of the male protagonists in things like Heathers and Labyrinth and Lisa Frankenstein is partly because... they take the female characters' emotions seriously. Like I'm not saying that they always make the best decisions about helping, but they take their girls seriously. Veronica is stuck with her image as a vapid party girl when she's slowly beginning to deeply loathe herself and those surrounding her; Sarah has her privacy dismissed by her stepmother simply because she's older than her toddler half-brother and shouldn't want to be selfish for once; Lisa is expected to just stop grieving the deeply traumatic loss of her mother because it's time for her to start playing happy families as a normal sister and daughter. And JD and Jareth and the Creature all listen. JD encourages Veronica to break free from what's expected of her and stands with her when no one else will. Jareth appears and offers to fulfill Sarah's unrealistic fantasies with magic. The Creature devotedly listens to every word Lisa says and protects her from anyone who has hurt her. Yeah, JD kills three people and has Veronica forge fake suicide notes to cover it up, and Jareth kidnaps Toby with the intention of turning him into a goblin, and the Creature goes straight to murder as his method of protection (in particular using methods that might even retraumatise Lisa), but that's all for plot reasons. There wouldn't be a story if there was no conflict. The fantasy is found in the way they listen when no one else will, and how the female protagonists have their negative emotions taken seriously when everyone else dismisses them.

Diy doesn't have to be Make A New Jacket From Scratch btw, it can be turning Jacket You Don't Wear into Jacket You DO Wear by adding a simple patch, adding a cool charm to your zipper, or dying it a new color! :) diy is about doing whatever you can do, with what you have, however you feel comfortable.

Don't psyche yourself out of a good thing! It takes time and practice but you can Get There!! what the practiced diy-ers with all the coolest projects don't tell you is they were beginners too once upon a time!

I love absolutely all of the costume pieces in Hackers, they’re all such unique pieces and are so fitting for each respective character but i just wanted to share just a few of my favs that i saw on hackers curators!!

Dades party pants - “Dade wears these checkered wide-legged bondage pants to Kate's party. They were designed for Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren's World's End label, for the 1984 Hypnos collection. Dade's pants are blue and orange checked with orange details, but a light blue and yellow color was also produced.”

Phreaks BW jacket - “Phreak wears this black and white Pierre Cardin leather jacket on top of the Empire State Building during the hack battle and again when the Hackers gather around a pool table to score the battle”

Cereals velvet underground Tank - “Cereal wears this ripped 1980s The Velvet Underground tee during both Cyberdelia scenes and at Lord Nikon's apartment when he shows up to watch Hack The Planet. The shirt features the cover art from Michael Leigh's controversial novel from which the band got their name.” (i made a version of this for a cosplay awhile ago)

Curtis’ Jacket - “Curtis wears this jacket by Solar-1 to Cyberdelia on the night Dade beats Kate's top score.. It is an EMT jacket that is available in several colors and has distinctive silver reflective stripes to help Curtis look slick all day (and night).”

Kates backpack - “Kate's "backpack" is a USAF C9 Parachute quarter deployment bag. The straps were added for the film” extra: “Deepdive information is coming soon, but in the meantime, check out the video process of our recreation.”

Razors Boots - “Razor wears these long "yeti" fur boots in the club scene when he and Blade agree to help hack the Gibson. These boots are vintage goat fur après ski boots by Italian label Oscar Sport, likely from the 1970s. Oscar still makes this style, called the Capra 01, although a few small details have changed in the past few decades. If the current model is any indication, the boots are handmade in Italy out of Tibetan goat fur and are wool-lined. Razor must be cold-blooded to dance all night in these babies!”

Youtube Blackout (important)

I’m basically just restating a couple of other posts so that hopefully more people will be aware.

Tomorrow, August 13th, Youtube rolls out a new policy that uses generative ai to guess whether a user is 18+ based on the maturity of the videos they watch. Anyone who watches ANYTHING related to cartoons, video games, kids media, etc, will be targetted.

If you continue to use their services once you have been warned, they will “request” your ID and other personal information from you. This is a major privacy violation. If you do not give your personal info, you will be banned.

Starting tomorrow, until the decision is reversed, there is going to be a blackout where (ideally) nobody uses Youtube to force their attention.

I want you all to participate, if possible. Download videos beforehand if you need something to watch during the blackout. Censorship will continue to get worse if we don’t retaliate.

Adult medias that feature gameplay and/or animation are just as susceptible. This affects everybody.

note: this post has been sitting in drafts since the release of sotm so i’m just gonna polish it up a bit and release it. take my kind of dogshit opinion boy

potentially controversial post but i don’t necessarily always hardcore fuck with the implication and idea that william afton was a fake genius who ripped off all of his work from other people-slash-just took all the credit for freddy’s (like with edwin and henry) from a horror writing standpoint.

like i feel like there’s a certain terrifying edge to the thought that a man who was basically a savant at creating works of mechanical brilliance and an innovator of popular characters and whose whole purpose in life was to bring joy to children with his machines and mascots essentially became a disturbed killer for the sake of those machines.

let me cook about batim for a second. okay so obviously batim was released way after fnaf 1 but i think it was released before henry was a major player in the games- well that’s not important. i’m just bringing up batim for the sake of contrasting joey drew and henry stein to william and henry. i feel like joey drew as a character is a far better fit into the role of ‘entrepreneur manipulating and milking ideas from his actually creative business partner’ purely because joey drew as a character has more sturdy, straightforward characterization than afton (because the natures of their games are slightly different- meaning batim was written by someone who was Not Scott Cawthon). he’s greedy and in possession of stinking riches, yet insecure enough about his talent and success that he feels the need to be able to pay his way to the top. and he abuses henry stein for his ideas, like bendy.

i just feel like that general dynamic is largely absent in mainline canon fnaf william and henry since their power dynamics are obviously not that of joey’s and other henry’s. but also that relationship works best with joey and henry because the nitty gritty of it feels very fleshed out compared to what we’re supposed to assume about william and henry’s dynamic.

and i’m not complaining about how the games and novels actually incorporate william since i’m a big fan of henry emily’s characterization as a quiet genius contrasted with afton as the outgoing family man but i think it would be equally as interesting and far more psychologically provoking if william was equally skilled with machines and the characters he created to the point where he was also kind of ‘consumed’ by them like henry was in the novel trilogy.

i don’t know something about the horror aesthetic of someone who knew and loved every detail of the machines so clearly that he eventually became one before he even physically did, and when he does become a bizarro pastiche of man and robot he is so much more powerful for it

i actually don’t think this is necessarily one of my big brained posts but i’m just curious as to if this is an immature opinion or something people would agree with me on
