what does it mean to be human?
what does it really mean to be human? i guess from a biological perspective classification is easy. walks on two legs, predominant communication is verbal, has apposable thumbs, specific bone stucture, eukaryotic cells and respires through two lungs. the recipe of a homosapien. a checklist of characteristics determining what consists of a human. but consistence is limitive, for what makes a human and what a human is made of are two very different questions. humanity, at the core of it, is relative. there is no deadset checklist as to the behavioural characteristics of any human. some speak of being humane - that is, by dictionary definition, the act of being considerate and/or empathetic - as a part of being human. i mean, it literally consists of the word itself. however, that notion is contradicted by the simple fact that not all humans are humane - begging the question on whether we, as a species, are really worthy of titling the word. that aside, we are still left pondering on the definition of our very existence. as a community, a species and a whole - what does it mean to be human? perhaps humanity is not obsolete. perhaps we should stop searching for something that cannot be found. perhaps we must realise there will never be a universal answer for an impossible question. past, present and future alike - all destined to divulge in difference. never will humans as a race ever be the same, for with the loss of diversity brings the loss of humanity itself. it is our differences that bring us together, that form our communties, species and selves as a whole. to be humane is to be empathetic, and to be empathetic is to embrace and understand our differences. as the societal devlopment of humans has become more and more prevalent, we have become more and more humane. by definition, our flesh and bones are what makes us humans by default. but as each individual forms and their personality flourishes, another human is made.
