hello! first of all i love your blog.

the problem i need help with is troubleshooting fcitx5 to allow cjk input methods on my ubuntu laptop.

i'm a newbie to linux, i started getting into it around a year ago. i have a desktop running linux mint cinnamon and chinese input worked out of box, but on my laptop i have been attempting to set up the input method for... about 3 months. i am out of my depth and feeling so disheartened!

it's a Lenovo ThinkBook 13s G2 ITL running Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS. happy to send the diagnostics i'm getting and the help articles i've been referencing.

When was the last time you updated fcitx5 since beginning this journey? Linux often updates frequently, and being an update behind could make further troubleshooting a nightmare!

Did you install the environment variables with {export XMODIFIERS=@im=fcitx5}, {export GTK_IM_MODULE=fcitx5}, {export QT_IM_MODULE=fcitx5}

Did you fully install it using sudo apt install?

Did you turn it off and back on again Not Applicable

I’ve also found that when struggling with a Linux program, sometimes the easiest method after a while is to fully uninstall the software and start from the beginning again!

(Additionally in my research, I found you can access extra fonts by using {sudo apt install fonts-noto-cjk fonts-noto-cjk-extra} and {sudo apt install xfonts-way}!)

Most games that have a dialogue system making use of more than one text style have an internal markup system (similar to e.g. HTML tags) used to determine properties of the text, such as size, color etc. inside the message.

In the Super Mario Galaxy games, some of these tags are not merely redundant but outright self-defeating, so that one tag may change the text properties only to be immediately undone by a different tag changing them to something else.

The image shows a baffling example of a message in Super Mario Galaxy 2 that visually changes color 5 times (starting with black, to red, to black, to blue and finally back to black), which would normally need no more than 5 color change tags.

However, internally, the game instead changes the color 10 times, including multiple times in a row into the same color. This messy implementation is likely a remnant of various rewrites of the original message whereby the tags were never cleaned up between revisions.

A non-passing trans man isn’t inherently read as a cis woman btw.

Like. At one point, maybe this was the case. That was a time when the average transphobe thought being trans was “when a man was so gay he decided to be a woman” and the closest thing in their mental image to a trans man was a butch lesbian.

We don’t live in that time anymore.

We live in a day and age where the trans flag gets shown as part of the visual on news networks covering some major story that involves trans people. There are trans politicians. You can say “trans man” and for many people there’s a mental image that pops in their head. You can show top surgery scars on an advertisement and enough people will know what that means well enough to be angry that they’re “encouraging young girls to mutilate themselves.” We literally had a very well known celebrity come out as a trans man and watched the reaction from the public.

You can be a trans man who doesn’t pass as a cis man or a cis woman and is definitely read as a trans man.

You can be a cis man who gets mistaken for a trans man because you “kinda look like it”.

If you want to acknowledge the reality of trans men’s lives, you can’t pretend anymore that our existence is some total mystery to transphobes that hasn’t been discovered yet. They know about us. Stop pretending they don’t.

The terms “computer bug”, “software bug”, and “game bug” all have the same predecessor- moths!

The first recorded instance of a “computer bug” was in 1947, when engineers were working on the Mark II Aiken Relay Calculator, the grandpappy of modern computers! (bonus fun fact: we learned how to make computers by watching people weave on looms!)

Why run a tech support blog?

The goal is for r/techsupport to merge with my home town of Tumblr, where i’ve resided since 2014. I can’t fix every issue but I can sure try, and while it helps fix your issue, I get some real-world experience in fixing things!

What differentiates you from google?

Not much, actually. I am better then using an AI, though, because I can research your issue and not provide you an endless feedback loop of “hm, try this!”

This question is phrased this way for a reason, though! Currently I am a Google certified IT support specialist, with 6 overall pieces of paper that say I know how to handle cybersecurity, operating systems, sys admin, computer networking, and one that’s just called “tech support fundamentals”.

Basically, i wasted 8k on a program to attempt to get a better job and still work retail, so I made this blog to try and help some people!

not to worry, though! Things like malware and viruses that would affect you are usually pretty harmless, or if they are harmful, get caught by your systems protections. The big bad and scary ones that are constantly being improved and developed tend to go after big boys themselves- like how a certain grocery store chain just got hit with ransomware!

However, you should still ALWAYS practice internet safety. Don’t trust the beautiful women on Tumblr.Com, or the links on their posts. Configure your firewall (recommended settings are best if you don’t know how to configure a firewall! it comes pre-built in most windows and mac, and most distros of Linux), keep an antivirus (NOT MCAFFEE), or run Malwarebytes every so often!
