I need you to know that "I was raising the *knight of time*" got stuck in my brain so badly thay at moments I wonder if it's a canon line but then I remember that the only thing bro canonically said is proabbly that one note that tells dave to go to the ruff and then I'm like Oh right.

Homestuck is great for. A multitude of reasons, but specifically, i love homestuck for being *so* aware of its audience.

The felt works because we are told it does. There’s nothing particularly suave-looking about crowbar, but we know he is, and we treat him as such. The midnight crew works because when we see four mobsters with their various demeanors and weapons, we know these character archetypes and we know what to expect of them.

Don’t get me wrong- Hussie has done an *immense* amount of planning and writing, but still homestuck feels.. for lack of better term, bigger on the inside.

Dave’s character constantly repeats that he is not- and does not want to be- a hero. It should be glaringly obvious from the first few panels! Bro strider is abusive and dave is miserable. But we don’t notice, at least for a while, because that’s not what the audience is told to look at.

Dave cuts through his nametag with a samurai sword and we are told that dave is too cool for this, so we accept that dave is too cool for this. We’re told he’s a hero, so dave is a hero.

This isn’t to say that homestuck is all some elaborate hat trick, and we as the audience aren’t looking close enough. I mean to say that homestuck sets up characters while remaining extremely conscious of the people reading it. Classes are named after character archetypes that couldn’t be more up front with their symbolism and still you’ll spend hours trying to parse the minutae of why Aranea is a sylph but Vriska is a thief and a thousand other trivial character moments. You get far enough into classpecting and you start to notice themes and patterns that could not have *possibly* been planned out, but that work specifically because of how sound the world building is.

The epilogues, however abominable, work because homestuck’s timelines and dancestors and whatever else work hard to blur the line between canon and fanon. Homestuck is at its best when you find yourself wondering not “is this canon?” But “does it matter either way?” A good headcanon is just as valid as anything else because most of homestuck is just one extremely elaborate setup to a joke that only *implies* its punchline.
