#ActuallyAutistic Auditory Matrixing and also I Got A New Fan
The human brain is complex, capable of making connections, filling in gaps to create meaning where there is probably none. Take new fans for instance...
I got a new fan and you know how sometimes fans make noises that sound like words? Or even singing? Has that ever happened to you or is it just me? Let me backtrack. The light of day has faded. I’m reading in bed (actual book, yeah) till I get sleepy, it helps me sleep; and the nightlight lamp is on. Shadows and cats and a sleeping dog; and of course the AC is on because we have…

Acquainted with Mr. Murphy
Acquainted with Mr. Murphy
I feel like I haven’t blogged in so long! ((Because I haven’t.)) Some of you may know that myself, partner, and son participated in a documentary a few years ago. For our part, we spoke of the transgender experience. The docu-film isn’t through being edited and produced, but I stop and think of how different things are now, than when we were interviewed in NY and filmed at the beach in…

Have you read Kim's first book Under The Banana Moon? Here's an Update
Have you read Kim’s first book Under The Banana Moon? Here’s an Update
My 12 year old Kerry Annie spoke in a dull monotone now. Maybe it was the medication that flattened her; or something else entirely…because although that was typical for me, (I’m dysthymic) it wasn’t typical for her. The yellow room bugged me for lots of obvious reasons, but in part because I thought it unfortunate that one day when these kids got their lives together, they’d have an association…

#SugarArtForAutism, Kimberly Gerry-Tucker art, Cakes and cakes!
#SugarArtForAutism, Kimberly Gerry-Tucker art, Cakes and cakes!
I recall when my mother discovered how to pipe butter cream frosting roses. It was the first time I’d heard of wax paper, which is what the trays of roses went on when they went into the fridge. At about 7 or 8 years old, I was an adept student of frosting flowers. It (frosting) is still a fave ‘food.’ I got the knack of making frosting roses pretty quickly, as did she, and it was quite fun…

Ranting on random stuff
I sat on my specific recliner couch corner spot; in the Christmas-lights glow-quietness of having been productive and that glow of tired you get too, when you’ve done all you can. And the blanket was soft. And it was Christmas Eve but despite the wrapping and baking and decor (dollar store paper things with jolly faces), it felt like another day. My mind decided to spool out so I let it conjure a…

Covid Pasttimes
My mother used to say “She’s not a gusher…” to describe me when I opened a gift and was not raving outwardly about it. Then she’d laugh nervously as she always did when she was describing me.
Of course I didn’t have a name for me then, (flat affect, autism, dysthymia) there’s many names I’d acquire over time:

I'm Introverted and I'm Different (and also a part of the same human race as you)
I’m Introverted and I’m Different (and also a part of the same human race as you)
Some years ago, I had a stapedectomy, an operation to reverse hearing loss; involving a little implant. I feel as if it hasn’t worked the way I’d hoped, or else maybe the hearing problem is starting in the other ear now. Case in point: My partner, Al and my son Silas were all together in the van when Silas remarked that it appeared there was an older woman involved in a car accident. Silas was in…

Kimberly Gerry-Tucker Reviews the brilliant (autistic) poet Josh Corwin's book: "Becoming Vulnerable"
Kimberly Gerry-Tucker Reviews the brilliant (autistic) poet Josh Corwin’s book: “Becoming Vulnerable”
ART OF AUTISM book review by board member Kimberly Gerry-Tucker
JOSHUA CORWIN’S
Becoming Vulnerable (Baxter Daniels Ink Press/International Word Bank; April 2020)
It is not surprising to learn that the word “vulnerability” derives from the Latin word for ‘wound.’ This poetry collection, entitled “Becoming Vulnerable,” with its real-world themes of autism, addiction, sobriety and…
