I hate when people act like Percy misses Calypso or actually considered being with her. The “what if” line wasn’t about him being with Calypso in any sort of romantic sense, it was a “what if I had escaped the prophecy by staying on the island”. That man has been wifed up since 12 years old AND his fatal flaw is loyalty, that ho is not thinking about being with some weirdo goddess.

I lowkey think that line was out of character for Percy regardless but not so ooc that he was seriously thinking about “what if I was with her instead the love of life who I would literally kill for over and over again” like let’s be for real people.

Okay so can we take a moment to talk about how Annabeth and Percy both tried to talk about their relationship in botl and tlo:

Yeah it's so heartbreaking... like Sally was barely an adult when Percy was born and she didn't really have any reliable parental figures in her life to learn from. She raised him with pure love and kindness and she tried her absolute best but even so she still couldn't shield him from the dark side of the world (and it wasn't her fault AT ALL it was just the world was cruel. And also Poseidon was a terrible dad). Can you imagine how guilty and lonely and helpless she must have felt? I don't know but sometimes I think about all those hard years in which all they had was each other and I just can't 😭

This sentence haunts me a bit.

Because after everything that Sally has sacrificed to ensure Percy’s safety, after suffering physical, emotional and psychological abuse from Gabe for years, sending Percy to probably very expensive private schools, and still managing to remain kind, baking him cookies, and giving him blue candies whenever he felt bad, and never raising her voice at him, she was still doomed to fail at fully protecting him.

Because to save Percy from getting killed by gods, and monsters, she had to invite a monster into their very home. She had to “condemn” Percy to receive physical and emotional abuse during crucial stages of his life, resulting in dangerously low self-esteem, self-hatred and even suicidal tendencies; issues which follow him throughout every single book.

By the time he was twelve, his self-esteem was so low that Percy even believed Sally didn’t want him around at the start of The Lightning Thief.

Sally, whom he thought the world of. Sally, who is, in his eyes, the kindest, most loving person in the world.

I can’t even begin to imagine how much that thought would mess with a twelve-year-old boy’s mind.

Like, I know we as a fandom see them as the most healthy and best possible mother-son bond ever, and I’m not denying that they absolutely love one another, would do anything for each other or that Sally did not do her absolute best to protect him, but their relationship is in actuality way more nuanced and heartbreaking than we tend to acknowledge most of the time.

When can we just accept that all characters are flawed (which is what makes them so fascinating) and stop criticizing them for it. It's honestly so fucking annoying. My god.

Honestly every time I see someone saying "percabeth is unhealthy and problematic and shit so they shouldn't be together blah blah blah" I can't help but crack up a little. Dude they're literally traumatized teenagers who have been through wars and hell why would you expect them to be healthy lmao. percabeth crit drives me insane. “she demeans him with jokes” have you never teased someone before??? “she judo flipped him!!” it’s very common for demigods to be physically rough with each other. THEY TRAIN FOR BATTLE WITH DEADLY INTENT ON THE REGULAR AND FIGHT ACTUAL GODS. I think Percy could handle a flip or two. “she punches him on the arm,” again, demigod culture is different. not saying she SHOULD be punching him but calling her abusive is an insane reach. “she’s traumatized but still needs to learn and grow from these mistakes,” you JUST acknowledged that she’s traumatized. what are you even trying to argue rn? That Percy can’t handle roughhousing his girlfriend?? that she’s too strong for the actual son of Poseidon??? Why are you both unfairly criticizing a traumatized teen girl while babying Percy? “she’s emotionally unavailable,” have you never heard of a character flaw? Have you ever stepped outside? Yes yes I'm still pissed at how Percy had to be blamed for Bob & Calypso. Yes he made a lot of mistakes but these two, THESE TWO were NEVER his responsibilities. Again I understand the characters blamed him for them, but I hate how Rick also implied that they were indeed his fault, which is just bullshit, and I hate it even more when some of the readers also shit on Percy on this matter. Look I know Percy is not perfect and he has flaws but these two are just really really bad examples.

I will never get over the fact that rick riordan's favorite way of uplifting other characters is to tear percy jackson down

I'm rereading the books and I feel the need to make a post listing all the nice things Annabeth and Percy have done for, or said to, or benefited each other, no matter big or small, directly or indirectly, intentionally or unintentionally. Because I hate to see critiques on either of them, and sometimes I just want to focus on how much they love each other, or in some cases just how much of a good person they are, and how much I love them.

So here's a list for The Lightning Thief (I'm gonna do later books as I reread them one by one). I'm starting with Annabeth because her accomplishments and good deeds get overlooked much much more often than Percy.

And while making this list I also found myself unconsciously including some things they've done that contributed to the quest, because I'm also sick of some people saying bullshit like Annabeth isn't that smart at all and is actually pretty useless... so in general this is more of a list showing their love and care for each other as well as their courage, kindness and wit (and some cute moments I can't bear to drop) which makes it way longer than expected.

Alright, here we go!

🦉 Annabeth:

- Nursed Percy back to health after the Minotaur battle. (I know she did it rather for her own sake to get information from him but still she did a nice thing.)

- Tried to step in front of Percy to defend him when the hellhound attacked. (Yet all some people can focus on is how she tricked Percy during Capture the Flag so she must be pure evil... hello hello she instinctively stepped in to protect him right after that scene do you people even read??)

- Volunteered to join Percy's quest. (Also more for her own sake but again, he needed someone and she was there, which was nice.)

- Offered to cover Percy for him to escape from the Furies (when they weren't even friends!)

- Told Percy he was brave for coming back for her and Grover.

- Figured out Aunty Em was Medusa and warned Percy about it & provided a plan to defeat her.

- Didn't stop Percy from sending Medusa's head to the Olympus. (This is so funny I don't even know why I include this but I believe this was a nice gesture coming from her somehow, like she stood with her friend (?) even though she didn't approve of his act, or maybe she agreed with his opinions on the gods to a certain extent.)

- Tried to talk Percy back from bartering with Hades because she believed it wouldn't be good for him.

- Apologized to Percy after blurting out something mean about his dad. (See? She DOES acknowledge it when she says something that's not very nice. She is NOT that heartless, arrogant, unapologetic bitch some of you people always like to claim her to be.)

- Accepted Percy's peace offering by suggesting that Athena and Poseidon could, in fact, work together.

- Offered to stay with Percy on the Gateway Arch when the elevator was full and he couldn't get in.

- Helped each other climb over the fence of the water park. (This is just cute.)

- Robbed the Waterland souvenir shop so they all got fresh clothes. (Yay!)

- Went into the Tunnel of Love with Percy even though she was embarrassed.

- Did a little math on the boat in the Tunnel of Love and gave out an accurate enough cue for them to jump.

- Apologized for freaking out at the spiders in the water park & thanked Percy for saving her. (Again! She DOES acknowledge her mistakes and incompetencies thank you very much.)

- Comforted Grover together. (My babies 😭 *hugs each of them* *kisses them on the cheek* Mommy loves you so much!!!)

- Opened up to Percy about her dad and the famous "bEcaUSe YoU'rE mY FrIEnD SEaWeEd bRAiN"!!! (I can't express how much I love this scene. They are literally my angles, all three of them ❤️❤️❤️)

- Distracted the truckers when they were about to run into Percy and Grover.

- Used the Lotus Casino credit cards to get a cab to LA.

- Tried to reassure Percy and boost his morale when he was upset about making the deadline after the Lotus Casino.

- Apologized right after she said something snarky to Percy and encouraged him when they were going to enter the Underworld. (She's actually pretty sensitive to people's emotions and she really cares about Percy's feelings!! How do you call this girl abusive I truly don't understand 😡)

- Held Percy's hand when they went into the Underworld.

- Managed to train Cerberus in a gentle and professional way so they could get through. (And she teared up when they left the dog 😭 again how do you even call this girl abusive?!?!)

- Offered to stay in the Underworld for Percy to save his mom.

- Apologized to Percy about his mom after they left the Underworld.

- Gave Percy her necklace before his fight with Ares. (My heart is melting 😭)

- Took care of Percy after he got bitten by the Pit scorpion & believed him about Luke.

- Took Percy's advice to reconnect with her dad.

🦭 Percy:

- Apologized for getting toilet water over Annabeth. (It was kinda his fault but not entirely lol.)

- Agreed to take Annabeth on the quest because he knew how much she wanted it.

- Refused to leave Annabeth and Grover behind when the Furies attacked and managed to save them all.

- Complimented Annabeth on her battle skills shown during the confrontation against the Furies.

- Followed Annabeth's directions when fighting Medusa (and thus the pattern starts here.)

- Offered to take first watch on their first night so his friends could catch some sleep. (This is a scene I want to expand a bit on - Percy also noticed that Grover was upset and talked to him and tried to comfort him, meanwhile Grover mentioned that Annabeth forgave him for Thalia. This scene really shows how the three of them are all very good kids and all care about each other very much... god I love them so much my babies 😭)

- Said hello to the poodle after Annabeth told him to. (I'm sorry this gets me cracked up every time I just have to include it.)

- Tried not to drool in his sleep when Annabeth was sitting next to him. (I really need to stop including these ridiculous little things but they're too funny I just can't help it I'm sorry!! 😂)

- Tried to make Annabeth feel better when she told him about her dad.

- Offered to make peace with Annabeth by asking her if they could ever cooperate.

- Went to the Gateway Arch with Annabeth because she wanted to see it and he didn't want to let her go on her own.

- Was really paying attention when Annabeth was ranting about the Gateway Arch and found it interesting.

- Was willing to stay behind on the Gateway Arch because he didn't want to bother others.

- Saved Annabeth in the Tunnel of Love when she was busy freaking out at the spiders & again followed Annabeth's direction to jump.

- Said it was okay when Annabeth apologized for the spiders.

- Asked Annabeth about her dad and tried to do a little therapy session there. (He actually did that a lot throughout the series. I'm impressed at how often people were willing to open up to him. I know it was mainly because Rick needed to show other characters' issues through Percy's narration, but it also shows that Percy is someone who is always willing to listen and understand.)

- Woke Annabeth up in the Lotus Casino.

- Came up with an idea to save Annabeth and Grover from being strangled by Procrustes's waterbeds.

- Managed to lure Charon into agreeing to get them into the Underworld.

- Let Annabeth hold his hand when they went into the Underworld. (I'm NOT grinning like an idiot when typing this. )

- Refused to sacrifice Annabeth or Grover and made the hard choice of leaving his mom in the Underworld. (And he promised to return Hades's helmet and mentioned Charon's pay raise AND Cerberus's needs to be cared for. God this boy really has a big heart *sighs*)

- Challenged Ares for the lightning bolt, which is basically risking his own life to save everyone the trouble.

- Acknowledged Annabeth and Grover's assistance when getting Zeus's approval for completing the quest. (Zeus didn't really care though lmao.)

- Helped Annabeth (however unintentionally) with making up her mind about returning to her dad.

Annnnd that's it for TLT!

I'm quite amazed at how long this list went, like I knew they were both great and cared about each other a lot but I didn't realize they'd already done so much for each other when they were barely friends.

And rereading the book scene by scene really made me see how many times the trio worked together to get themselves out of tough situations. The three of them were all indispensable to this quest and any attempt to downplay the importance or contributions of any of them should be convicted as a serious crime!! They were literally just kids who were trying their best and actually succeeded which is so, so impressive. Big applause to all of them 👏👏👏 TLT trio always has and always will hold a place in my heart!

And I also think that Percy and Rachel are just two confused demiaroace kids who have mistaken a squish as a crush. Percy likes to spend time with Rachel but it doesn't mean he likes her romantically. When Percy says he likes to spend time with people like Grover or Tyson do we think he likes them romantically? No. And that can be the same case with Rachel.

And Rachel probably has a similar feeling. She is intrigued by and attracted to Percy but maybe not in a romantic way. She just doesn't realize it because this heterosexual-dominated society tells her if she feels attracted to a boy it must mean she likes likes him, which is not true!! She kisses Percy just to test if she really likes him that way and the result is probably not. If anything, she is more attracted to what he represents.

Percy & Rachel platonic friendship is so valid to me and it's a shame it seems to simply disappear after TLO... Rick Riordan I'd never forgive you for erasing their friendship to make way for romantic love :(

It's so ridiculous to blame Percy for Michael and even more ridiculous to think that Will would blame him for dragging him to save Annabeth after Michael's death. Like hello??? They're in the middle of a war?? What else should he do???? Let all the Apollo kids mourn for Michael and just let Annabeth die?? He wouldn't have done that even if it wasn't Annabeth, but some other camper who was wounded and needed medical attention! And neither would Will! Because again, they're in the middle of a fucking war and anyone with a brain would prioritize saving people who are alive and still can be saved instead of wasting time on the battlefield to mourn the dead.

see this is interesting. ive heard this take before and im honestly not sure how i feel.

part of it is like.....i love percy. i have a very hard time criticizing him for much of PJO (although there are few choice things -- his treatment of annabeth and rachel in the later books, for one) because of the sheer amount of good he did, intentionally, while enduring so much active and hostile sabotage. like, nobody told percy SHIT. he was confused all the time in a way no one else was because no one told him anything ever. and when he asked he was ignored or, worse, mocked. percy is at the core of him a deeply kind and caring person who was given the worst possible hand in every possible way.

every time percy is framed as the villain i really just think of sea of monsters tbh. frequently the least favourite book in the series, somehow, but that whole novel was percy desperately trying to work with the information he had to keep the people he loved safe, while his peers and friends were actively turning against him. i think people forget that, for the vast majority of his time at camp, percy was NOT beloved. he had friends, and he liked it there. but people turned on him pretty easily! they blamed him for thalia's tree poisoning, they scapegoated him for the gods' bullshit, they made his quests harder and belittled his accomplishments. percy was and always has been expected to save everyone's ass and then expected to sit there and take it when people list all the ways he could have done a better fucking job. i don't buy it.

percy was friends with michael. he was hurt when he died. he was hurt when ALL his friends at camp half-blood died; he considered the deaths of even those he didn't like as personal failures. percy always TRIED to help, even people he couldn't fuckin' stand. think of how often he has saved clarisse's ass, even though she actively tries -- and, over time, he learned to like the challenge -- to make his life miserable. like, percy didn't personally kill michael yew. he didn't disregard his life. he watched his friend die, too. all while the closest person in his life was bleeding from a poisoned dagger she took to protect him. and while the living embodiment of the end of times was destroying his home and every person he loved in it.

maybe im missing something. was michael not the one to know his own death coming? did he not die laughing, having asked percy to put the events in motion, knowing the sacrifice he was making?

i went back and checked. before michael even died, there was this, from percy:

A hellhound lunged and I sidestepped. I could have stabbed it, but I hesitated. This is not Mrs O’Leary, I reminded myself. This is an untamed monster. It will kill me and all my friends.

and then, a few paragraphs later:

I tried to wound his men, not kill. That slowed me down, but these weren’t monsters. They were demigods who’d fallen under Kronos’s spell. I couldn’t see faces under their battle helmets, but some of them had probably been my friends.

and for michael's death -- i was right. he sacrificed HIMSELF. he was friends with percy, too, and he knew the goddamn cost of letting percy -- their forced savior -- die. michael made a CHOICE. read it for yourself, i'll emphasize some of the more important parts:

I got unsteadily to my feet. The remaining Apollo campers had almost made it to the end of the bridge – except for Michael Yew, who was perched on one of the suspension cables a few metres away from me. His last arrow was notched in his bow. ‘Michael, go!’ I screamed. ‘Percy, the bridge!’ he called. ‘It’s already weak!’ At first I didn’t understand. Then I looked down and saw fissures in the pavement. Patches of the road were half melted from Greek fire. The bridge had taken a beating from Kronos’s blast and the exploding arrows. ‘Break it!’ Michael yelled. ‘Use your powers!’ It was a desperate thought – no way it would work – but I stabbed Riptide into the bridge. The magic blade sank to its hilt in tarmac. Salt water shot from the crack like I’d hit a geyser. I pulled out my blade and the fissure grew. The bridge shook and began to crumble. Chunks the size of houses fell into the East River. Kronos’s demigods cried out in alarm and scrambled backwards. Some were knocked off their feet. like...i want to know every little detail about will solace as much as the next person. but this post is genuinely in direct ignorance of canon 😭😭 not only did percy stay to search for michael -- he was the FIRST to search. percy cared about him. and he recognised the depth of michael's sacrifice, the risk he undertook. he tried to stop him.

this is no one particular person's fault. i think as the percy jackson universe has gone on, percy, as a character, as been (ironically) kind of watered down. it has been easy for people to forget who he is, how kind he is. but i see it a lot. i see percy as this kind of apathetic, uncaring villain too often and it drives me insane. im BEGGING people to love the side characters and the barely-mentioned as much as i do, but to remember whose voice drew us in the first place.

I think one thing this fandom doesn't address & appreciate enough is how Annabeth jumps into a crashing helicopter WITHOUT ANY HESITATION to save Rachel, A GIRL SHE IS SUPPOSED TO HATE. Annabeth-haters never get tired of criticizing her for being mean to Rachel yet never seem to remember that Rachel wouldn't even be alive if It's not for Annabeth's courage, wisdom and decisiveness. Like wdym we don't see Annabeth apologizing to Rachel on page so Rachel shouldn't forgive her?? If I were Rachel I'd forgive her for everything the moment she gets into that fucking helicopter. I'd instantly fall in love with her. I'd be willing to be her best friend forever. Do you not realize how legendary that action is?? Do you not realize that at that moment, Annabeth is Rachel's knight in shining armor instead of that mean girl who treats her poorly because of a boy? (Both identities are valid, that's for sure. But it's so tiring that people keep scolding Annabeth over her mistakes while forgetting all the great things she's done. You know it kinda spells *cough*misogyny*cough*.)

And we definitely don't appreciate their friendship enough either. Like they literally have an instinctive connection even when they don't like each other. Of course they'd become friends when that one problem between them is solved!! Please stop invalidating female friendship just because you can't stand a teenage girl behaving like a teenage girl. My god 👿👿
