"He has arguably seen her in the most tender light out of everyone in her life" is the reason why I refuse to sit back & watch people treat his friendship with Penelope like a flaw. He sought her out, confided in her, defended her, LISTENED to her (something that no one else did, and just because she & the audience didn't like his response to some of the things she told him doesn't mean he wasn't listening), appreciated her wit and just altogether enjoyed her company. He always had time for her & she'd always been worth it to him. "Didn't see her" my arse cheeks.

I will never tire of repeating that there is absolutely NO WAY one who actually honours Colin's friendship with Penelope could ever treat it as a character flaw on Colin's part. If you believe Colin is an idiot who didn't see or appreciate what was right in front of him, you hate their friendship. If you consider the fact that he didn't reciprocate Penelope's feelings as something he needs to face consequences for or learn some lesson from, you hate their friendship. If you think every moment he spent not being in love with her is a moment he spent not really seeing her, you hate their friendship. If you interpret every moment he spent living his life in a way that didn't cater to Penelope's romantic feelings for him as him being flippant, cruel & careless towards her, if you interpret it as him making her suffer & think he should atone for it, you hate their friendship (but also, you don't really care for Colin as a character of his own, which you are allowed to do I guess, but then understand that that's a you problem & don't paint it is a short-coming on Colin's part. that shit is all you). If you believe that every moment he spent just being her friend is a moment he spent treating her as if she was less than, you hate their friendship. If you believe that every moment he spent not reciprocating her feelings is a moment he spent taking her for granted, you hate their friendship.

I guess I'm just thoroughly confused that supposed friends-to-lovers fans seem to have a very poor opinion of friendship and ultimately believe that it is inferior to romance. Because that's just the crux of it all, right? If Colin is supposedly lacking for offering friendship, then the implication here is that there's something wrong with friendship.

Another very confusing implication from all of this is that Colin isn't a good person and/or a worthy partner. Because all the things mentioned above aren't things that someone who'd be considered a good person or a sound choice for a potential partner would do. Those are not ways they'd be described. Colin, as interpreted by many (dare i say most) Polin fans, is essentially dull, cruel & shallow, among other unflattering attributes. And that leads to the conclusion that many (dare i say most) Polin fans appear to like neither Colin nor Penelope. Because the way I see it, you can't like Colin if you think so poorly of him, and you certainly can't like Penelope if you think being paired with that guy that you think so poorly of is what she deserves.

I guess what I'm getting at is that I have come to the puzzling realisation that some of the biggest peddlers of mischaracterisations of Colin are Polin fans, and this has made for a very strenuous fandom experience for me. It's frustrating & confusing. I hope that the fandom will course-correct at some point, but we are still dealing with "Colin needed to grovel" nonsense in the year of our Lord 2025, so I guess I won't be holding my breath 😭

Yes you don't have to like everything your fave does, yes you don't have to like your fave's partner if you don't want to but let's get to the other part: you also don't have to be a nasty, mean-spirited, bullying piece of shit to them. Just like you don't have to like them, you also don't have to mistreat them. And if you are struggling to know what is the appropriate way to behave towards people whom you don't care about or even dislike, here's a suggestion: shut the fuck up about them and stay out of their business.
