OC x Mighty Nein
I had to write down my character’s backstory for a session and decided to bed that into a little fanfic with the M9. <3
(Caleb, Nott, and Fjord belong to Critical Role, Meliachd belongs to me)
Mel let herself fall into a free chair, drink in hand, ready to numb all the feelings from this day. Her head was swimming with all the emotions she had felt today, sadness at Nott’s revelation of her past, the shock – and even disdain – at Caleb’s, but also guilt at seeing him knocking himself down because of it. Faintly, the tiefling recognized the rhythm of the music changing in the background, the band falling into a song that was all too familiar. Eyes still closed, she unconsciously started humming along to the song, her mind filled with past memories. As the song ended, she slowly opened her eyes, a silent tear falling down her cheek, only to find the others look at her surprised.
“That….that was flawless Zemnian,” Caleb muttered.
“Ja…I guess. I actually haven’t spoken it in years,” Meliachd replied hesitantly. “l was raised in a tiny village near Pride’s Call before I got drafted into the army.”
“But then you’ve served the Empire too?” He sat down next to her, looking at her in anticipation.
“Yep. Served the Empire proud and strong.” The tiefling joked. “Me and a boy – Telf – were the only Tieflings in our little village. We did everything together ever since we were little. He was my best friend – hell, he was even more than that. My brother? First love? I guess a bit of everything.”
She took a deep breath. “He always had this idea of becoming a soldier in the Empire’s Army and he put that idea into my head too. At first it was all games, us running around with sticks pretending to sword-fight, but over time this became our only identity. What had started of a way for me to be able to provide for my parents in the harsh winters turned into this dream of becoming an honoured knight and when the call came after we had come off age, we were proudly seen off by everyone in the village.” “I’m not gonna lie, training was hard, but I loved every second of it. After all, we were protecting the people of the Empire, protecting the King. Then the war started and the first few battles felt great. It was everything I had every dreamed of and more. I finally had a purpose.” Mel smiled vaguely.
“As the war went on, though, the realisation hit even more that the people fighting on the other side were just like us and not the terrible monsters we were trained to see. But still, Iwent on without hesitation, but then…” The girl bit her lower lip, hesitant if she could really trust those people enough to share this part of her story. From the corner of her eye, she saw Caleb shift in his chair, leaning over to her to put his hand on her knee. Her first instinct was to immediately push it away, but taking it in for a second, she realised it made her feel…calm. Her eyes shily drifted him her knee, up his arm until she met his brown eyes, the firelight in the room reflected in them. Not taking her eyes away from his, she continued, her voice slightly shaking.
“I think something snapped in me when we burned down a whole village. One of our own people. Just because we heard the rumours that a spy was hiding there. We…” She led her eyes back to the ground, closing them for a second to try and lock the tears away that were threatening to escape. “We locked them all in and burned down every single house. Those that tried to run were struck down, worse even done to some women…” As she, Meliachd could still taste the ash and smoke in her mouth.
“And then you left…” Fjord concluded quietly.
Mel’s eyes snapped up to his for a second, trying to read the expression in the pool of yellow and orange. “I didn’t.”
She looked around the room, trying to find the traces of disgust and shock she was expecting on everyone’s face. Or pity, which would be even worse. To her, surprise, however, she found none of those.
“I wish I had been strong enough to leave, but I wasn’t. I tried to talk Telf into leaving, but he wouldn’t hear of it. He was living his childhood dream, his devotion still unwavering unlike mine. And this was still the only place where I’ve been someone. A respected soldiers, part of a group of many. Or at least so I thought…Turns out the army recruits Tieflings for a very specific reason and Telf and I were gonna find out soon which…”
“Collateral…” Caleb muttered, his voice barely more than a whisper. Of course he’d known. After all he had trained to accompany the same troops, so he knew all their strategies.
The purple tiefling nodded. “Apparently everyone knew of this strategic manoeuvre, at least everyone but me and Telf, because once we got into an ambush that was threatening to overrun our whole group, our spellcasters cast a spell on Telf and me that would bind us in place while they disengaged. We weren’t even close to each other as that would have maybe given us more chance to somehow fight our way through. The spell only lasted for ten minutes, but that was enough for everyone else to escape and for us to attract enough enemies that, by the time we were free to move, there was no way out. I saw Telf go down first. My vision blurred, I tried to claw my way through to him, not caring for the searing pain that every cut of their swords caused running through my whole body.” Hot tears were falling down on her clenched fist, knuckles white from the tension, her sharp nails digging into her palm drawing blood.
“When I finally reached him, I felt hot pain piercing through my back, my legs buckling under me. The last thing I remember before everything went black was my hand trying to reach him to heal him, but I failed. When I woke up again I was alone, chained against a cold stone wall.” Meliachd visibly shivers at the memory. Trying to shift her focus back to the present, she realised that the pain in her palm was gone, her hand instead intertwined with Caleb’s.
“Was…was that the last time you saw him?” Nott asked carefully.
“Unfortunately not,” Mel replied.
“After having been tortured for days, where it took all the strength I had left to keep my mouth shut, they just tossed me into the woods one day, without any of my weapons or armour. They probably thought I was gonna die or end up as owlbear food anyway. I don’t even remember much of my journey, drifting in and out of consciousness for weeks, more dead than alive. But somehow, I made it back to the army’s main camp.” The tiefling took another deep breath to steady her voice. “But instead of welcoming me back, they just laughed at me, telling me that I was no use to them now that I have lost my armour and weapon and that they definitely wouldn’t waste another set on a useless tiefling like me. The commotion attracted the King’s attention, who had just arrived a few days earlier to check on his troops. In my desperation, I launched myself at him. Of course, I didn’t get even close in my state and was promptly grappled by one of his personal guards. With the king’s instruction to depose of me, then guard roughly dragged me to the outskirts of the camp, his sword drawn. ‘What the fuck do you think you’re doing, Mel?’ he spat at me through gritted teeth while throwing me on the floor. I was too taken aback by the familiar voice to answer. Turns out, they had been instructed to return and retrieve Telf, apparently his devotion paired with his skill hadn’t gone unnoticed by the higher ranking generals and he had been one of the candidates for the new King’s guard. The enemies that took me must have left him there, thinking him dead already – as I did - , but turns out that the army has quite skilled healers, seeing as he was now towering over me, not a single scratch left on his body.”
The tears in Mel’s eyes that had formed earlier were now replaced by flaming anger and hatred. “For some reason, he let me live that day, though I had wished he had just killed me for months afterwards. But apparently, he had still enough love for me left to spare my life – or enough hatred to just prolong my suffering.”

I wasn't super happy with what I wrote for that prompt, so I decided to add another longer part ☺️
Home - Caleb Widogast X OC/Reader
Prompt: 48. Someone accidentally lets something slip
Character: Caleb Widogast (property of Liam O’Brian/Critical Role)
Word count: 1257
I lean back with a sigh, closing my eyes for a second to stop the tears from falling. My mind is racing, trying to process everything I’ve just heard. Caleb has always hinted that his past was dark, constantly pushing everyone away that got even remotely close to him because of it, but I hadn’t expected anything like what I’ve just heard. I hate myself for having reacted the way I did. The hurt in Caleb’s eyes when he saw my shocked expression had felt like a dart to my heart.
“I can understand if you want me to leave. I know I don’t deserve any of this or you.” Caleb’s voice is full of guilt and grief. All I want to do is walk over to him and hug him, but I just couldn’t bear the thought of him shying away from my touch. And why would he listen to me? Nott has told him several times that he needs to stop beating himself up, that she’ll always be by his side as his friend and he still doesn’t believe it. So why should he believe me or even care? I'm not even part of the Nein.
Nott is currently at it again, reassuring him again and again that he will always be part of the Mighty Nein.
“I’m just not a good person. I don’t even know if I’m capable of any positive feelings…And I don’t wanna drag all of you down with me…” Caleb continues, his face buried in his hands, every muscle in his arms tense, like a scared cat pushed into a corner, ready to strike or flee at any second.
“But you are a good person, Caleb,” Nott reassures him once more. “And you care for us, don’t you? So you definitely are capable of love.”
At this Jester jumps up. “Right! And you’ve told me you had feelings for Mel, so there’s that!”
At Caleb’s sharp intake of air, Jester covers her mouth in shock. “Oh.”
My eyes shoot up, darting between him and Jester before finding his eyes. “What…?” is all I was able to usher, the words probably not even intelligible for anyone not within a few inches of me.
“I…I’m sorry,” Caleb mutters, before shooting up, pushing his chair over in the process. Before anyone could stop him, he rushes out of the house.
-----------------------
Nott is about to follow him, but Fjord puts an arm on her shoulder, signalling her to wait.  Without even having been able to sort my thoughts, my feet carry me towards the door.
The cold air hits my brain like a wall, immediately making my thoughts clearer. Has he really told Jester he had feelings for me or has she just misunderstood him? While those thoughts are rummaging through my mind, my eyes scan the vicinity of the house. Thanks to my darkvision I’m able to spot Caleb within moments. His hands wrapped around him, he’s walking around aimlessly.
With a few fast steps I’m able to catch up to him. “Caleb, please wait,” escapes my mouth quietly. He stops, but neither turns around nor looks at me.
“Please, just forget what Jester said,” he mumbles, his eyes still fixated at the floor.
“What if I don’t want to?” My reply barely more than a whisper.
Caught off guard, his posture relaxes for the faction of a second before he tenses up again, his fingers digging into his own arms.
“I’ve seen the look on your face earlier,” he states matter-of-factly.
Taking a deep breath, I finally regain my courage and place myself in front of him. Gently but firmly I pry his hands away from his body, taking them into mine instead.
“Caleb, listen,” I begin, more confidently than I feel. “I won’t lie and say I wasn’t shocked – hell, you should be concerned if I weren’t – but your past doesn’t define you.”
I remove my right hand from his and let it hover over his breast to see his reaction. Instead of moving away, he uses our still connected hands to pull me slightly towards him, closing the distance between us. This close, I can breathe in his smell of old leather, books, and fire. With my ears filled with the beating of my own heart, it gets harder to form a coherent thought. I close my eyes and try to focus on the rhythm of his heart, steadily bumping against my hand on his chest, instead.
My gaze leaves my own hand and travels up to his face, his eyes still averting mine. “When I look at you, I see a man that deeply cares for others, even though you might not want to show it openly. Who would move mountains to right the wrongs he’s done…And I just wish you would see the same things when you look in a mirror.”
He opens his mouth to object, but before he can I continue. “I know it’s much easier said than done, believe me.” Now it’s my turn to look down at the ground. “I know what it feels like to be haunted by your past. To hear those screams in your head as soon as you’re in a quiet room. To relieve those moments every night in your dreams, only to wake up to the taste of smoke in your mouth as if you were still there…” My voice breaks, warm tears burning their way along my cheeks.
To my surprise, I feel his hand underneath my chin, gently pushing it up. “Sounds like you should take your own advice,” he whispered, his eyes meeting mine for the first time. We don’t speak for a moment while he subconsciously brushes his thumb across my cheek, wiping a stray tear away. With my heart threatening to jump out of my chest I take a small step towards him, our faces just a few inches from each other.
“We…You…Shouldn’t. I could never forgive myself for dragging you down with me…I’m not the person you should lose your heart to…even if I might have lost my own to you.” He is so close that I can feel his breath brushing my forehead as he speaks. I feel his weight shift away from me slightly, so I slightly tighten my grip on his left hand.
“Please, don’t act like I don’t know what I’m in for. And I know you love to protect people, but could you please let go for once and trust me when I say you don’t have to protect me from yourself? Because I want you – the good and the bad - and I want this – whatever ‘this’ is going to be. So please just stop worrying and kiss me.”
I feel the heat rising in my cheeks, my mouth acting quicker than my brain, not having intended to actually say the last bit out loud. I almost expect Caleb to turn on the spot and run.
A slight gasp escapes my lips as his hand suddenly moves from my cheek to the back of my head, pulling me in, so our lips touch. No longer hesitantly, he wraps his other arm around my lower back, pulling me in even closer, deepening the kiss. My body completely melts into his embrace. All my nervousness gone, instead replaced by a feeling of warmth and safety...the feeling of home. Something I've haven't had in a long time.

Comforting The Reader After A Tough Battle
Caleb
Caleb, being the squishy wizard that he is, knows that the battlefield can be an unpredictable place - no matter how experienced or inexperienced someone is, there is always room for error.
That's why he was so understanding when you lost your pep after a fight that wasn't in your favour.
The Nein had taken their leave, setting up a camp nearby to heal injuries and catch their breaths. All the while you remained where the fight had taken place, observing the aftermath of the destruction that everyone had left behind.
Or rather, the destruction everyone but you had left behind.
Your head wasn't in the right place that day, with your thoughts racing and a weight on your shoulders. You had tried your best, you really had, but your spells weren't as potent and your sword hadn't met its targets. You barely contributed to the fight, and you couldn't help but feel guilty about it.
Your mind was elsewhere when a tail curling around your shin brought you back to the present. You glanced down at the Frumpkin, the tabby cat staring up at you expectantly, gem-like eyes shining in the fading light of the day.
Mood slightly lifting in his presence, you scooped up the familiar, threading your fingers through his soft fur, and as you turned around you noticed you weren't alone. Caleb stood a few feet away, hands in his pockets and a pensive look on his face. Slight embarrassment filled you - you didn't want anyone in the party to catch you in your disheartened state - but the gentle purrs coming from the cat in your arms quickly put you at ease.
The wizard closed the distance and patted your shoulder comfortingly, his eyes tired but full of fondness as he searched your face. "You did good today." Before you could protest, the hand on your shoulder pulled you into a hug, Frumpkin slipping out of your grasp and landing on the ground elegantly so he wouldn't he crushed between you. Caleb shook his head and perched his chin on your shoulder, observing the battlefield behind you.
"I know you might think otherwise," he said softly, "but you did all that you could, and that's an achievement in itself. What's more, you got through it. You live. We both live, because we are a team - and teams look out for each other and share victories. It's days like today that help us learn and grow, while tomorrow brings possibilities of doing better. You are strong. You are brave." He learned back slightly to have you meet his eyes, still keeping you close. "And myself and the others are always so grateful to have you by our sides. Never forget that."
You held onto him just a little tighter, emotion rising in your throat as your vision blurred with unshed tears. You were exhausted, but his words and lean frame managed to keep your knees from buckling and falling apart. A few moments passed of simply holding each other, but eventually you found the will to pull away and nod. A smile teased its way onto his lips. Caleb draped an arm over your shoulder and led you to camp, Frumpkin at your heels as you abandoned the battlefield.
There was no need to linger there any longer. It was time to move on and look to what tomorrow brings.
"Let's get you fed and rested, ja? I think we both deserve it."

Mistletoe - Caleb x Reader
Prompt: Mistletoe
Character: Caleb Widogast (property of Liam O’Brian/Critical Role)
Word count: 377
Late breakfasts are your favourite. You don’t often get to just sit around in the morning, but that’s what you’ve been doing today. For hours. Trying to figure out where to head next. Fjord and Beau deep into a discussion on how to best handle all the new situations that have presented themselves to you in the last few days, Jester and Nott only half listening and instead fooling around, Caduceus busy making the perfect tea for everyone, and Caleb leaning against the kitchen counter, his nose deep in a book as always. After a while, Cad announces that the tea is done. Ready to get some warmth into you on this cold morning, you immediately get up and walk towards the huge kettle. As you pass Jester and Nott you suddenly feel yourself trip over legs that just seem to have shot out from under the table, sending you tumbling forward. Within the faction of a second you find yourself crashing into Caleb, his hands immediately grabbing your arms to steady you.
“Woah, careful there,” he mumbles in surprise.
“What the hell, Jester? Why would you-“ Your voice gets stuck in your throat upon seeing the mischievous grin on the blue tiefling’s face, her eyes trailing to a spot above you. As you look up, you see a mistletoe forming, tiny colourful sparks surrounding it as Jester works her magic.
“I’ve heard that means you have to kiss,” she explains innocently.
As you hesitantly turn back to face Caleb, you realize for the first time how close you are. His lips almost brushing the top of your head. Heart beating faster, your eyes darting from one interesting spot on the wooden floor to the next, you finally find your voice to talk.
“We don’t have to-“ you begin but before the whole sentence has even left your mouth, his right hand gently tilts your chin up, your lips now inches from his. He holds still for a second, waiting for you to close the little distance that was left between you as a way to ask for you permission. With a shy smile, you gently grabbed his tunic, pulling yourself up on your tiptoes before you close your eyes, just a moment before your lips finally touch.

caleb x reader
Prompt: “What are you doing here?”
Character: Caleb Widowgast (property of Liam O’Brian/Critical Role)
Word count: 382
As soon as you turn the corner, you spot the familiar brown hair. It’s like your subconsciousness is immediately drawn to him whenever you’re in the same vicinity. Before he has a chance to spot you, you draw your hood close, turning your attention to one of the stalls, carrying an assortment of oddly shaped potion bottles.
As you turn around to leave, you crash into a figure, that immediately grabs your shoulders to steady you. “Sorry ‘bout that,” you mumble before you start registering who was standing in front of you. “What are you doing here?” the person demanded harshly, making you wince. “Did they send you?”
“What? No,” you stammer, confused as to why he would think that. “I left them years ago,” you try to explain, unable to look him in the eyes.
“Then why are you following me?” he asked again, his voice full of disdain. That’s when your head snaps up, meeting his stern brown eyes, eyes you’ve been too intimidated to look into when you were younger, with your own. “Why would I follow you?” you ask incredulously, anger rising in your voice. “You really still think you are the centre of the universe, don’t you Bren?” you spit at him. You notice him flinching at the mention of his name but you couldn’t care less at this point. “When I left, all I wanted  was to forget everything about the Academy, to get as far away from everything I’ve done as I could. So you think it’s funny for me to constantly bump into the one person that made my time there even worse by constantly breaking my heart?” Your eyes open in shock by the words that had just left your mouth.
You see the man in front of you lose his composure for the first time ever, his grip on your shoulder slightly loosening. “I…what?” he asked in a whisper, barely able for you to hear him. But you had taken your change when you felt his hand open for just a faction of a second, forcing your way out of his hold and were now walking away from him as fast as you can.
“Jayra, wait!” you hear him shouting after you, his voice already getting lost in the mass around you.

Hello there!
I’m new to this whole Tumblr thing, but as I really wanna go back into writing, I thought I’d give this whole oneshot/imagines/headcanons thing a shot.
I’ll be writing for CR Campaign 2 and 3 (maybe 1 once I’ve gotten round to watching that) and Supernatural. I’ll try to post a prompt list soon, but feel free to also request whatever.
WHAT I DON’T WRITE:
- reader as a minor (no matter if it’s romantic or platonic)
- anything about pregnancy/having children with a character
- probably no smut
