Intro: October 1916 was a busy month for Lovecraft - he finished six poems all at once!

And this is just part of all the other work he did, at the time, for the UAPA.

This short poem is from HPL's own journal, The Conservative.

Title: "Inspiration."

One fragrant morn¹, when Spring was young,

I roamed the glen² in eager quest,

Hoping with a careful eye among

The grass to find the violet's nest³;

But not a leaf or bud⁴ seemed to have sprung

Up from the couch⁵ of wintry rest:

And yet, when all my greedy search was over,

By chance I spied the flow⁶ I missed before!

One night, within my chamber pent⁷,

I strove my fancies to enchain⁸

In breathing numbers⁹ & to vent

Some portion of my bliss & pain;

But strife of soul my musings rent¹⁰ -

The sluggish pencil moved in vain:

Yet out upon the mead¹¹ the starlight brought

The long wished for song, unbidden & unsought¹²!

Notes:

1. Morn is a poetic shortening for "morning."

This was known as "forenoon" a long time ago.

So, I'm surprised Howard didn't use it!

Morn is sometimes mistaken for mourn, which means "to feel sorrow or regret at someone's death."

2. A glen is actually a "secluded & very narrow valley."

This area is long, with very gentle slopes surrounding it.

These glens were originally found only in Scotland & Ireland.

3. "Violet's nest" seems a curious description for "a clump of violets."

They're found in various habitats like woodlands, meadows & near streams.

Strangely enough, they use insects for pollination.

Plus, they pollinate as well - thru some closed up flowers!

Definitely not leaving their sex life to chance!!

4. A bud is "a short, undeveloped shoot, leaf or flower."

These will remain dormant & grow only when suitable conditions are present.

They usually survive winters this way.

5. A "couch of wintry rest" probably means "to 'sleep' thru winter."

As couch comes from the Old French couche, meaning "the lie down."

A couch potato thru freezing winter?

6. Flow, in writing, describes "the smooth 'connection' of words & ideas while writing &/or reading."

It's a quality of good writing where the text can be easily followed & enjoyed without any confusion or interruption.

But, here, Lovecraft is just poetically shortening the word "flower."

7. Pent is another word for pent-up, which means "to be confined or held back."

In slang, pent means "to repress one's own feelings or emotions."

8. Enchain usually means "to tie some one up - with chains!"

But, here, the narrator is restraining his own wilder ideas.

Which seems counter productive, as he's seeking inspiration.

But, maybe these wild ideas were too distracting to be used...

9. "Breathing numbers" is another curious phrase to use.

Usually, this refers to one's respiratory rate - between 12 & 20 breaths per minute.

I think HPL is just saying his narrator is "excited" in a poetic way.

After all, the narrator's venting pain & bliss at the same time...

10. Rent - No, not the monthly payment.

Instead, closer to "the violent tearing (of something) apart."

In poetic terms, rent means "to cause great emotional pain (to someone)."

11. Mead, in this instance, is not honey wine.

Just Howard's poetic shortening of "meadow."

And, he seems to always use it!

12. Unsought is "(something) that's not needed nor is wanted or desired" - like advise!

There exist, today, a large variety of "unsought product services" which buyers don't usually order.

These include new technology or paid service plans.

3. Lucifers is early English slang for "matches."

Named after the Biblical Hell King, the name symbolized their ability to bring forth light & for their potential danger.

4. Deuce describes the number two on dice or playing cards.

But, Lovecraft used it as a mild slur associated with "Deuces", slang for "goodbye" among friends.

5. Racer, here, isn't concerned with the fast, but harmless, snake.

Howard is writing about a "fast horse" or "vehicle used in racing."

The third meaning is that of a "round rail along which a carriage" or "heavy gun platform moves."

1. Maurice Winter Moe was an English teacher in Wisconsin & knew Howard from 1914 til 1937.

Moe was part of two of HPL's literary groups: the Gallomo & also in the Kleicomolo.

He was a fervent evangelical Christian so the 'truth' of his religion led to some sharp discussions between the members - as Lovecraft was an atheist - since age 5!!

But, Lovecraft did advise Moe for about a year, when Maurice wrote "Doorway to Poetry", a book on the appreciation of the verse form.

Moe was also the author of the essay "Life For God's Sake."

2. Bookworm describes "someone who reads a lot of books" &, their enemy - "beetle larva that eat paper & the glue used to bind them together."

3. Winewell seems to be taken from the Winwell family.

Whose name was found in the US census from 1840 to 1880 in North Carolina.

From there the family spread out to Alabama, California & Michigan.

4. Queer originally meant anything "strange" or "odd."

Older slang also had a meaning of "to spoil" or "ruin (something)."

Queer came to be used as a slur for any LGBTQ folk in the late 1800s.

But, in the late 1980s, activists began to reclaim the word as a positive self- description.

5. Temperance, in US history, was a social movement that promoted restraint in drinking alcohol.

But, it soon began to outlaw drinking all together!

This led to a 15% decrease in alcohol related problems (in liver disorders & mental health).

It also led to widespread bootlegging & the growth in power of organized criminal syndicates!!

6. A social glass is a poetic phrase to describe a moderate way to avoid intoxication.

The CDC describes moderate drinking as one drink per day for women; two drinks per day for men.

However, there's other factors that can influence the true impact of a drink:

A. Different people metabolize alcohol differently.

B. Certain health conditions (like liver damage & diabetes) need to avoid alcohol altogether.

C. Alcohol can change the impact of certain medications.

D. Pregnant women shouldn't drink any alcohol at all.

E. Alcohol can affect some mental conditions & make them worse.

The choice is yours...

7. 'Twas is an old literary term for "it was."

It shouldn't be confused with Twa, meaning "foreigner" or "outsider."

These people are Pygmies who live in parts of Burundi, Rwanda & Zaire (the Democratic Republic of Congo).

8. Caustic means "(something) that burns or corrodes living tissue."

But, Howard meant the secondary meaning of being "sarcastic in a bitter & scathing matter."

Caustic also has a physics meaning having to do with the "intersection of reflected/refracted parallel rays from a curved surface."

Yeah.

My mirror image is a little bit lost here too...

9. 'Would seems to be a literary or poetic contraction of the words "it would."

That's the only reading that makes any sense of what HPL wrote.

10. Raw has six different meanings & many subdivisions in those.

The nearest definition is "uncooked!"

But, in the subdivision of "material" or "info that hasn't been (edited well enough for publication)."

11. Chum, here, isn't "chopped fish parts & other material thrown over- board as fishing bait" - nor, to attract deep sea monsters...

Instead, the word is an informal term for "a close friend" - with gills?
