Designing a Vanara Exemplar - rambling about my thought process

This is the first time I'm doing a post like this, I mainly aim for clearing my own brain about the character of Kobo, and putting everything I have down in a cleaner format. All the art in this post was drawn by me in the span of three days. Feel free to ask about the character or the process, I'm happy to answer to the best of my abilities.

I am making matching characters with my friend for a possible pathfinder game we will partake in, and I want to share my process as I work on my character. The general theme was decided by the friend, which gave me the censer as a random weapon, and Vanara as a race to go with.

Image drawn with no references At first my concept was not the best, but I knew that censer smoke would go really well visually with a Japanese macaque. I barely remembered how these look like, so Kobo didn't look like much of anything </3 That was before we got offered spots in a campaign, so I didn't put much weight on the design making sense, being a warmup exercise.

Then I remembered that nue exist, so I steered Kobo in that direction. The censer turned into more of a lantern design, referencing an npc from a game I used to play in a while ago. That's also when I came up with a general cloud theme, having Kobo traverse the lands with the grace of morning fog and the power of a storm cloud. The "ribbon" around her was supposed to represent the clouds, but it didn't fit as well as I've imagined.

Then I was invited to play, along with the same friend that picked her general theme, which got me to take Kobo's design seriously and put more work + research into it. We agreed to do matching characters for the session, ending up with a theme of "miss perfect and miss outcast". I went with the miss outcast theme, as I imagine that vanara express emotions completely different to other races, considering their resemblance to monkeys.

Keeping to the Japanese macaque and nue inspiration, I went ahead with doing studies of macaque faces to get her mimicry and face shape correctly. I could get a more coherent and consistent result when drawing her, so I could move onto the whole concept.

I kept the general theme of clouds and storm with her, picking her ikons to be the Thousand-league sandals (visually represented by the ankle bracelets, scar of the survivor (lightning scarring on her back)and the Titan's Breaker (unarmed attack + lightning damage). She is all about mobility and self-sustainability on the battlefield, having the speed to easily get out of harm's way, while being able to pack a punch when she sees an opening. Going unarmed might not be the best, but it fits her most, though I have to admit 2d4 + 8 damage while using titan's breaker is pretty nice. Her divine spark cycling through her body will cause her fur to stand up and crackle with the energy of a raging storm, making for some decently cool art possibilities.

Open Pathfinder Campaign

HEY YOU YEAH YOU You ever wanted to play Pf2e but never were able to because your GM was too into DND or just because you didn't find anyone to GM it?

I'm opening up Six (0/6) Seats on the Pathfinder 2e adventure path of Kingmaker, an adventure path focused on exploration and roleplay potential which has the players go from level 1 to 20. Exploring lands never before charted and raising a kingdom from nothing.

This IS A paid campaign. I have been a GM for 7+ years and I can guarantee a professional-grade experience.

The campaign cost is 7 USD per player per session! And to alleviate any concerns, no player can buy items, etc. The cost is just so I can spend more time working on the campaign, weaving your characters into the narrative, and giving it a lot more time and care.

As for scheduling, once at least 4 seats are filled, we can start selecting a date that works for all players interested.

This campaign is extremely open and welcoming to anyone who hasn't tried PF2e before or is wanting to switch from 5e! Or anyone who wants a cool adventure to rock on. Both beginners AND veterans will have plenty of chance to play and enjoy it, so don't be afraid!
