As much as I can understand how saying "I identify as _" feels long-winded and unnecessary and almost beating around the bush versus saying "I am _", by definition, they're one in the same. It's the same distinction as saying "the sky's color is blue" and "the sky is blue". If saying one over the other is just a matter of preferring how one sounds or the length of the phrase then yeah go for it, but if it's because saying "I identify as [species]" feels like you're not saying the same thing as when you say "I am [species]", then you likely don't grasp what to identify as actually means. The actual definition of identity is "the fact of being who or what a person or thing is". Don't let others' shallow interpretation of such a deep and meaningful term dictate your language. You ARE that species no matter which way you say it. /nm /gen

I will return to my hiatus after this post, but I felt the need to pay respects to Sam Nordquist, a trans man of color, and unfortunately, the recent victim of a hate crime in New York, in which he was subjected to all kinds of torture for two months.

Sam's mother described him, saying he was “very kind, loved his family, loved his nieces and nephew, very outgoing, worked hard.” She also said he was the type of person to "give you the shirt off his back. "

I will not be mentioning the perpetrators' names. May they be brought to justice and forgotten forever. Disgusting wastes of oxygen.

Sam Nordquist, 24 years old, far too young. Rest in power. May the world be kinder to you next time if "next time" exists. May you never be forgotten and may your family heal from the horrible events.

Sam’s vigil will be on Monday, February 17, at 6pm. The vigil will be held at Wood Library, 134 N Main St. Canandaigua, NY 14424.

I urge that you donate to his families gofundme campaign if you can.

I also urge you to call or write to your sensators and representatives. Events like these are the results of the current culture war and propaganda against trans people and people of color. The creators of all of those articles, videos, books, and laws that have been used to spread transphobia and racism. They are at fault aswell.
