Une géographie pas comme les autres -

Hi there, it’s my first time doing that but I am quite happy to write this post for @herecomesthepolyglot for the Langblr Secret santa challenged organised by @langblrsecretsanta

As I could see you like studying French and geography :D so why not doing it for France - Yeah let’s go deep 

Introduction

I do love when thing are a bit organised so I will make some parts.

You might already know how Fench geography is complicated ;) but I thought it will be a perfect topic because I am from what is now called a “French oversea territory”.

I’m living a bit everywhere in Europe since I went to colleage, but I’m from Reunion Island - Île de la Réunion

Petit Point sur la Réunion

L’île de la Réunion est un territoire d’outre-mer français, tout comme la Martinique ou la Guadeloupe. La Réunion est située entre Madagascar et l’île Maurice. 

Cependant, la Réunion est également un département d’outre-mer et une région française. 

Département et Région : those could simply be considered as county and regions. One region usually contains a few department. However, for oversea territories some are both a Region and Department they are called :  DROM - Département et Région d’Outre-Mer. 

Why ? I guess I could you divide a island into department when the island is sometime smaller than a Department. Some oversea territoires are only now only Collectivité d’Outre-Mer like “Wallis-et-Futuna” or even more complicated like “la Nouvelle Calédonie”. They don’t have the same statut but their citizen are French (so no need for Visa inside the EU).

Vocabulary List 

There are so much more things to speak about but I thought I will make it a bit educational and also some vocabulary words : 

- Réunionnais/ Réunionnaise : habitant de l’Île de la Réunion 

- DROM (Département et Région d’Outre-Mer) is now used, previously people would refer to those DROM as DOM-TOM (Département d’Outre-Mer et Territoire d’Outre-Mer) Effectivement pourquoi faire simple quand on peut faire compliqué. 

- Ancienne colonie française : Ex-French colony. Ce terme est obsolète, en effet, même si certaines personne l’utilise, l’administration française, les lois française et la constitution ne réfèrent jamais les DROM comme des anciennes colonies.

Culture et Histoire (en Bref)

La Réunion était à l’origine une île inhabitée. Sûrement ? En réalité, il y a très peu de documentation sur l’origine du peuplement de la Réunion avant la colonisation française. Ce que nous savons c’est que la France a utilisé la Réunion comme escale de ravitaillement, après avoir eu des soucis avec la grande île de Madagascar. Les premiers habitant étaient des colons et des esclaves de Madagascar. Madagascar était elle cependant habitée. Beaucoup d’esclaves furent déportés à la Réunion principalement de Madagascar et de la côte Est d’Afrique. (Rien n’est cependant totalement précis dans la plupart des écrits.) Il y a eu aussi des débarquement d’Indien (du Sud et côte Est de l’Inde). Ils étaient principalement des travailleurs très pauvres appartenant aux classes les plus basses d’Indes. Ils voulaient travailler uniquement quelques années à la Réunion, mais les salaires étant trop bas, ils n’avaient jamais assez d’argent pour rentrer en Inde. La Réunion a connu également une immigration chinoise et de certaines régions de l’Océan Indien.

C’est la raison pour laquelle l’île est culturellement très riche et mixte, un peu comme le Brésil. Les cultures et religions se mélangent souvent et la majeure partie de la population est multi-ethnique.

I know that’s a lot of super similar vocab in one sitting, but once you learn them you’ll hear them everywhere

And I have started

I am not unfamiliar with Tumblr. I have been around for a couple of time, for a wide range of reason. My new hobby now is to document/blog about my new favorite dream. Starting my legal career abroad.

To be honest, I was deceived by diplomacy. Although I have dream about it for so long, 6 month internship was enough to refrain my desire to start my career in this very specific world. I have after decided to fully dedicated myself to a couple of thing !

1. Passing the bar 

2. Getting better at languages (including English, Spanish and another language, ideally Japanese or Korean)

3. and Just having more amazing things in my life.
