Knights of Walpurgis - Hogwarts 1940s HCs

Whenever his visions became intolerable, Cynesigé used to retreat to the bathing rooms and submerge himself under water until the chaotic torrent of images faded from his mind.

Lavrentiy and Neslişah had always harbored feelings for each other, but because Neslişah was engaged to Lestrange, they found it impossible to officially be together.

Ironically, both of them found a source of distraction in the Vulchanov siblings, whom they had slowly grown to care for, despite their initial "no strings attached" arrangement.

Abraxas was secretly obsessed with gossip columns featured in Witch Weekly magazines. He sometimes spent hours hunched over the latest issue, savoring the tantalizing tidbits about famous witches and wizards, their scandals, and whispered romances, all while carefully hiding his interest behind a facade of indifference among his peers.

Tom was the first one of his dormmates to get up every morning, and the last to fall asleep every night. From his side of the dormitory, you could always see an oil lamp lit on his nightstand, casting a warm glow as he pored over his books.

In the later hours of the night, when Riddle had grown bored of reading, he’d stay up listening to Cynesigé’s soft murmurings as he experienced visions in his sleep.

Sometimes, Tom attempted deciphering fragments of Lestrange’s dreams if only by the off chance he hears something concerning his future.

Aleksandr never goes a day without alcohol in his system, a routine that often blurred the lines between necessity and habit. The only thing he finds worthy of curing his hangovers is a bottle of vodka and some aspirin.

At one point, Neslişah tried to persuade Aleksandr to stay sober for at least a day. However, he would always remind her of a promise they made at the beginning of their relationship: she could never ask him to change who he was.

In their sixth year, Narkissos and Liriope Carrow killed their father in cold blood, believing that eliminating him would free them from his oppressive influence. After the deed was done, they crafted jewelry from his bones.

Nicasius had an extensive collection of taxidermied magical creatures that he kept in his bedroom back home. A few specimens were meticulously arranged on shelves, while others hung above his bed.

Verendus slept with his bed curtains closed because he didn't like the thought of his dormmates being able to see him in such an exposed and defenseless state.

Iolanthe Svantje Potter (b. 20 January 1956 - d. 14 October 1978) was the only daughter and second-born child of Dorea Black and Charlus Potter. She had been the younger sister of Marius, who was named after their estranged maternal uncle. In her early twenties, Iolanthe joined the Order of the Phoenix alongside younger her cousin, James Potter.

Within the late sixties, Iolanthe enrolled at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where she was sorted into Slytherin House, following in her mother’s footsteps. It was rare for members of the Potter family to be sorted into Slytherin, as most had traditionally been placed in Gryffindor. This distinction set Iolanthe apart from her family, which made her feel somewhat outcasted and insecure.

Iolanthe died unmarried and childless at the age of twenty-two after being killed by Bellatrix Lestrange, her first cousin once removed.

Avery family headcanons

Author's note: Some of these headcanons will include original characters that have existed in my drafts for a few years now. My old ocs haven't been mentioned before in this blog, so I thought that this post would be a good opportunity to finally introduce them.

The Avery family hailed from Normandy, France, but a few members left during the Norman Conquest and established a new branch in England around the 11th century.

Their surname is derived from the Old French personal name "Averi," which itself has roots in the Germanic name "Alfher," meaning "elf army." Additionally, it is theorized that the name may also derive from the town of Évreux, which is where Château de Avery was located.

During the early 1800s, the English branch of the Avery family found their bloodline outstretching into Eastern Europe, specifically: Bulgaria, Russia, and Slovakia. Those who belonged to this branch attended Koldovstoretz and Durmstrang Institute.

There is also a section of the Avery line that is of German and Dutch ancestry, although many of them can also claim Nordic roots, as well.

Unlike their Anglo-Russian cousins, the Germanic Scandinavian branch of the Avery family integrated themselves back into English society. This integration likely took place over several generations, as many of its members had long been settled in England by the late 1880s.

Those who remained in Eastern Europe became somewhat estranged from their relatives that resided in England, with many experiencing cultural and linguistic shifts over time. Early on, they grew less associated with the "mother branch" and adopted the new surname of Averkiyev (feminine version is Averkiyeva).

Some members of this family include: Vasiliy Averkiyev (b. 1922), Yevgeny Averkiyev (b. 1924), Verunya Averkiyeva (b. 1926), and Tatyana Averkiyeva (b. 1928). All four went to Durmstrang Institute where they became heavily subjected to Grindelwald's influence.

Many pure-blooded students that attended Durmstrang during the time of Gellert Grindelwald's rise to power had been greatly impacted by his ideologies. The school, known for its focus on the darker aspects of magic, attracted witches and wizards who were often sympathetic to Grindelwald's vision of wizarding superiority.

As a result, the Averkiyev family became loyal followers to the dark wizard and were among the many who wished to see him as the next Supreme Mugwump.

The French branch of the Avery family were known as House d'Évreux and had mainly been comprised of snobbish and elitist individuals who prided themselves on their noble lineage and connections to high society. They absolutely detested the collateral lines of their family, believing that those relatives had abandoned their right to the honorable Avery name after choosing to leave their ancestral birthplace.

House d'Évreux thought that they were more superior compared to their English cousins, viewing themselves as the true embodiment of Avery prestige. After a while, they would begin failing to acknowledge their daughter branch as an extension of the family, which would leave the connection of both lines to fade from history.

Lysandra Black (née Yaxley) (b. 10 October 1887 — d. 15 January 1950) was the daughter of Carodista Vlinder and Lysimachus Yaxley. She came from a family deeply associated with the British Ministry of Magic, many of her relatives having served as Aurors or high-ranking Ministry officials. Lysandra had two younger siblings: Lysistratus (b. 1890) and Lymantria (b. 1893).

Yaxley attended Hogwarts between the years of 1898 and 1904, as a member of Ravenclaw House. In her early adulthood, she pursued a career within the Legislative and Judicial branch of wizarding Britain as a Juror on the Wizengamot Council. During this time, Lysandra advocated for the strict blood purity laws, believing that the integrity of the wizarding community depended on its traditional values.

In her late twenties, Lysandra married Arcturus Black (II), a diplomatic and shrewd member of the prestigious Black family. Yaxley’s husband held a position as a lawyer within the Ministry and would often come to the defense of pure-bloods embroiled in legal disputes regarding their persecution against muggles.

Together, the couple had three daughters: Callidora, Cedrella, and Charis. In spite of their bountiful number of three beautiful children, Lysandra and Arcturus would be met with devastation in 1942 when their middle daughter, Cedrella, ran away with blood-traitor, Septimus Weasley. After this tragic misfortune, Mistress Black was keen to erase all traces of Cedrella from the family, even going as far as to suggest that her estranged daughter had died, if only to lessen the aching betrayal she felt in her heart.

In 1950, Lysandra died at age sixty-three as a widow, her mind broken from her constant use of memory charms to extract painful memories of Cedrella. Over the years, the repeated use of these charms took a toll on the elderly witch’s mental state, leading to disorientation and confusion in her old age.

Lysistratus and Lysimachus Yaxley are original characters of @knights-0f-walpurgis. This creator continues to develop their ocs and graciously allowed me to utilize them for my AU.

Aleksandr Vulchanov (16 December 1925 — 27 February 1983) was a Russian wizard of Bulgarian ancestry who attended Durmstrang Institute between the years 1936 and 1942. From an early age, Aleksandr was exposed to the elitist beliefs of his parents, who held strong convictions about blood purity and the superiority of certain magical lineages. He and his family were supporters of Grindelwald, believing in his vision where wizards ruled over Muggles for the greater good. Aleksandr’s upbringing shaped his early views, instilling in him a sense of entitlement and a belief in the inherent superiority of his own heritage.

Vulchanov had been the elder brother of Kseniya Vulchanova, who later became well-known in her own right after marrying Lavrentiy Rosier. Before his sister's engagement, Aleksandr became acquainted with the Dark Lord, formerly known as Tom Riddle, during the culmination of the Death Eaters rise to power. As Riddle sought to consolidate his influence and recruit followers, Aleksandr found himself receiving the Dark Mark within the year of 1948.

In his late teens, Aleksandr was the lover of Neslişah Shafiq, a strong-willed and fiercely independent witch, who became disillusioned with the oppressive ideologies surrounding them. Shafiq had been betrothed to Cynesigé Lestrange, heir to the English branch of House Lestrange. Vulchanov's relationship with Neslişah was short-lived, but the two continued interacting throughout their adulthood due to his association with the Rosiers, a close relation to the Lestrange family.

Short Headcanons for Orion Black

he gets squeamish at the sight of blood.

orion and walburga were best friends and married each other for duty. they loved each other, but only platonically.

black may appear cold, distant and aloof, but he's actually quite sensitive and secretly soft-hearted.

initially orion had planned to marry a witch from the greengrass family that he had genuinely grown to love, although arcturus disapproved because of their blood curse.

orion kept greengrass as a mistress, but his wish of marrying her remained unfulfilled, as the pressure from his family weighed heavily on his shoulders.

despite the passion they shared, he knew that marrying her would invite scorn and rejection from his father, who viewed the greengrass bloodline as tainted.

orion would never admit this, but he was devastated when sirius had been disowned from the family. the man would lock himself in his study for hours, claiming that he was tending to important matters regarding the estate and his job.

truthfully, orion was wallowing in sorrow and regret, grappling with the emptiness that Sirius's absence left behind when he left.

only lucretia and melania about how orion felt about his son's disownment, but they would never be inclined to tell anyone.

when orion was six, he wandered outside the gates of 12 grimmauld place, having been curious about the world beyond the confines of his family home.

as a result of this little excursion, black found out the reason why his father had always forbidden him not to step foot outside of the gate's threshold.

orion came across three muggle boys and showed them a display of his magic, but due to his young age the trick that he performed was uncontrolled. the children became fearful of the young wizard, prompting them to attack him as they believed he posed a threat to their safety.

after the assault, black returned to 12 grimmauld place covered in black and blue bruises with tears streaming down his face. arcturus was furious with orion, and the knowledge of what those boys did to his son only fueled his rage.

melania's heart was completely shattered at the sight of Orion utterly traumatized and refused to continue living in such close proximity to muggles.

they moved back to the black family's ancestral home shortly thereafter and rarely ever visited 12 grimmauld place whilst orion was growing up.

when he did return once married to walburga, the fear of muggles attacking him slightly dissipated, but somewhere buried in his memory, the incident from his early youth lingered.

orion was older now and his magical capabilities had grown significantly, using the skill he honed to cast protective enchantments over the house to keep his family safe.

(especially once sirius and regulus were born because he didn't want what happened to him to also happen to his sons, as well)

during his second year at hogwarts, orion became a close acquaintance with tom riddle. the two would start up a friendship, much to walburga's displeasure.

orion would never become a follower of voldemort, nor did he believe in riddle's extremist values. after they both graduated hogwarts, black began distancing himself from tom.

they were still friends, but barely saw one another due to riddle's schemes and ambitions that orion wanted no part of.

even so, both of them remained respectful and cordial to one another on the few occasions they did interact.

Hogwarts '40s — Riddle Era HCs

Warning: Includes original characters of my own making, potential non-canon ships, and poor writing. Most of these headcanons are based on my personal interpretation of what Tom Riddle's years at school were like, but I'd like to point out that there were a few of them were created with the collaborative effort of my mutuals. Also, I would like to point out that certain ocs mentioned in this post are not mine—credits will appear at the end.

Walburga Black absolutely bullied Riddle while they were attending Hogwarts together. She was in her second year when Tom was integrated into the wizarding world by Dumbledore, although his magical capabilities only earned him the disdain of his pure-blooded peers; many believed he was stealing their birthright.

Black, staunchly upholding her family's supremacist values, found joy in mocking Riddle's humble origins and Muggle status. Before Tom gained his reputation, Walburga reveled in her ability to belittle him, using her sharp tongue to reinforce her own sense of superiority.

Harsh and offensive words were not the only thing to escape Wally's lips when Riddle was in her presence. Sometimes, muttered curses slipped from her tongue, laced with malice and intent. These subtle curses were not verbal offenses, but foul hexes that were cast upon Tom if only to increase his misery by a fraction.

Riddle founded the Knights of Walpurgis during his fourth year at Hogwarts, his group of followers hailing from aristocratic and respectable pure-blood families. The boys were spoiled, entitled, and carried heads on their shoulders clouded by racist values that influenced them into joining Riddle's ranks.

Cynesigé Lestrange, a haughty and arrogant heir to the English branch of the Lestrange family, had been easily manipulated by his own hubris to impulsively affiliate himself with Riddle. He was driven by an unquenchable thirst fueled by ambition and desire for power over those he deemed lesser than himself.

Vavřinec Rosier was a French-born pure-blood wizard and the elder brother of Druella Rosier. He and his family were allied with Grindelwald’s regime before the French Ministry forced them out of France for their association with the dark wizard. Rosier's history caught Tom's attention as he sought to expand his circle of influence, resulting in Vavřinec's recruitment just shortly after the Knights of Walpurgis were officially established.

Kolgrim Mulciber was always the quickest one of the bunch to verbally exploit someone as a mudblood. Kolgrim never shies away from an opportunity to put people in their place with a biting tongue that left little room for defense. He took pride in his pure-blood heritage and wielded it like a weapon, often targeting those he deemed inferior. Kolgrim's insults were calculated, designed to sting and humiliate, and he had a knack for finding the vulnerabilities of his peers.

Verendus Nott was notorious for his unwavering disdain towards Muggle-kind. He was a figure of both fear and hatred within the wizarding community, known for his sharp tongue and even sharper intellect. With a lineage steeped in pure-blood tradition, Verendus often boasted of his family's long-standing abhorrence for Muggles, viewing them as inferior and unworthy of respect.

Fulcram Yaxley grew up in the shadow of his elder brother Remaclus and often felt the pressure to carve out his own identity, leaving him with the ambition to prove to his family that he was just as valuable as his brother. By the time he reached his third year at Hogwarts, Yaxley had become involved with the Knights of Walpurgis, seeking to earn himself a reputation that would distinguish him from Remaclus.

Abraxas Malfoy hated Tom Riddle. He was two years Riddle's junior and had heard the rumors through older peers about how the Muggleborn was pretending to be something higher than what was appropriate for his station. Malfoy was utterly disgusted by Tom, whose ambition and arrogance seemed to overshadow the very foundations of the wizarding world. Abraxas had grown up in a family that valued blood purity above all else, and he found Riddle's rise through cunning manipulation particularly offensive. Despite Malfoy's previous detestation, he would later be compelled to join the Knights after the revelation of Tom's ancestry.

Narkissos and Liriope Carrow, often known together as "The Black Peril", were twins born into the violent and malicious Carrow family. Both of them were recruited by Riddle to be the eyes and ears of his organization, utilizing their innate cunning and ability to blend in without being given much notice.

Sergei Dolohov was a transfer student from Koldovstoretz and enrolled at Hogwarts during his fifth year. He was expelled from his previous school for endangering a fellow student during the process of perfecting his purple flame incantation. Riddle heard about Dolohov’s reputation and invited him to join the Knights of Walpurgis, to which he agreed. Creating personal and complex spells was something that only few of Riddle’s Knights could do, and so he thought Dolohov would be an asset to him due to his skill in this department.

Nicasius Macnair had a natural cruelty and hatred towards magical creatures. He was plagued with a sick mind that manifested his disdain for anything weaker than himself. He hailed from a pure-blooded Scottish family notorious for their poaching of rare creatures, often using their furs to bolster their wealth and status.

Veasna Avery's unrivaled beauty was what attracted the attention of Tom Riddle, who thought he could use her to further his own ambitions. Veasna's physical attributes allowed her to manipulate situations to her advantage, especially when she was in the company of male peers who underestimated her. She became skilled at playing the game of charm and persuasion, using her looks to gain favors and insights while keeping her true intentions hidden.

Tom Riddle never ate in front of his followers. He found that eating in the presence of others showed a glimpse into his humanity, proving that he was no different from anyone else. Riddle thought that dining in the company of solitude would be the most effective course of action if he wished to appear less vulnerable.

Alphard withdrew from Hogwarts during his sixth year to enlist in the war effort, under the guise of "protecting magical secrecy." In reality, Black's true intention was to assist the Muggles.

Euphemia and Walburga were friends during their school days, but they drifted apart due to differing beliefs and Effie's marriage to blood traitor Fleamont Potter.

Abraxas Malfoy and Verendus Nott were first cousins. Abraxas's father, Brutus Malfoy, was the elder brother of Verendus's mother, Aurélie Nott (née Malfoy). In spite of their blood relation with one another, they often kept their familial connection a secret.

Druella and Cygnus were not lovers during their years at Hogwarts, having little to no interaction with each other, at all. The two were arranged to be married, but found love in their duty to one another, leading them to have a healthy union.

Due to Druella's association with Grindelwald, many "respectable" pure-bloods were wary of her as they didn't want their reputation to be damaged by being linked to someone who had shown such overt allegiance to a controversial figure.

The Rosier siblings were of Scandinavian and Slavic descent on their mother's side. The two were eligible to enroll at Durmstrang, but their father Félicien insisted that his children remained in France to attend Beauxbatons. In the end, Druella and Vavřinec were sent to Hogwarts after their family was uprooted from their home country.

Orion Black was at the top of his charms class during his years at Hogwarts, the skill he honed unmatched by any of his other pupils. He was very good at creating mirages through casted illusions. He was truly a man talented in the art of deception and trickery.

Dorea Black attended Hogwarts from 1931 to 1938, and so was still going to school when Walburga enrolled in 1936. Although the two were only separated by five years in terms of age, they weren't particularly close to the point where aunt and niece had been essentially estranged from one another.

Walburga's Patronus was a Black Widow spider, representing her dark elegance and venomous manipulation. Black Widows are known for their potent venom and ability to ensnare prey, perfectly mirroring her cunning nature and the lengths she would go to protect her purity. 

Cynesigé was gifted with the power of foresight, although he often believed it to be a curse. Ironically, the raven is the family emblem of the Lestrange family, and in Greek mythology, the same bird is a sacred animal of Apollo, God of Prophecy.

Neslişah Shafiq, a witch of Middle Eastern descent, was married to Cynesigé Lestrange and had two children with him: Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange.

The name Vavrinec, of Slovak origin, is a form of the name Lawrence (Latin: Laurentius) and means "from Laurentum" or "laurelled".

The French version of this name is Laurent.

A few short hcs for the rosier family

evan rosier was a seer, he often foresaw death and received most of his visions in sleep.

a few members of the rosier family actually inherit the gift of foresight, although it skips a few generations.

the rosiers obtained this ability through their ancestor, vérène lestrange.

their family flower was actually not a rose, but a narcissus flower.

the sisters minette and félicule, as well as their brother narcisse rosier, all married members of the lestrange family.

the rosier family originate from auvergne, france. although many members relocated themselves to paris for better marriage and political advantages.

the manor in auvergne was used as a vacation house by the time of druella’s childhood.

an old money family. they prefer to associate with more conservative pure-blood circles, which excludes families like the malfoys.

like the english branch of the lestrange family, the rosiers didn’t frequently resort to inbreeding.

they wanted to keep their gene pool more diverse, but continue their pure line.

that feat alone was not difficult at all, although there was an occasional repetition of a few surnames within their family tree.

nothing too excessive, but enough to know that the rosiers didn’t mind allowing a few distant cousins to marry them.

most members had blond hair and blue eyes, but minette and vinda rosier somehow inherited dark hair and green eyes.

the two women were noted to look similar in appearance to each other.

there is also an even rarer trait of brown hair and dark eyes, although this gene is seen in very few members of the rosier family.

disowning a relative is rare for the rosiers. unless it was a severe public scandal that needed to be properly acknowledged.

the family just simply dissociate from the individual that was no longer worthy of their position as a rosier.

back then, it was a great shame on the family if someone was disowned for betraying their purist morals.

the rosiers were not eager to bring shame upon their house. therefore, they never officially disowned anyone accept for when it was absolutely necessary.

as a result, to keep up appearances the rosier family would sometimes invite their estranged kin to social banquets.

everyone would pretend they were welcome, but the tension at some of these parties was almost tangible.

felix rosier was raised away from his brother, due to being the youngest sibling and the spare heir to the rosier family bloodline.

it was apparent that felix’s father did not wish for him to become head of the family in the case that evan were to die.

felix himself had no interest in one day taking up evan’s mantle if unfortunate circumstances were to arise.

luckily, the younger rosier brother had become estranged from the family due to his association with blood traitors.

evan did eventually pass away, although his death left an unborn child fatherless.

vavřinec held out hope that the baby would be a son, although when it ended up being a daughter he had no use for her.

evan’s short-lived marriage to a lady from the french aristocratic family would prove insignificant from the outcome of her daughter’s birth.

of course the rosiers would make sure that the mother of their son’s child was financially supported, but nothing more.

when evan’s daughter was eight, her mother passed away. afterwards, she was taken in by her aunt liriope rosier.

unlike many other pure-blood families, the rosiers were in full support of voldemort’s uprising.

after grindelwald’s failure to carry out his revolt, the family were eager to make a contribution to his cause.

this made a lot of complications for druella when she wished to marry cygnus black.

the blacks were not very supportive of voldemort’s rise to power and weren’t very happy about the idea of being associated with him through a marriage with the rosiers.

cygnus was the one who pushed for the betrothal to commence, but druella had to agree that she wouldn’t follow his influence.

Vavřinec Rosier (b. 12 January 1925 - d. circa 1986) was the son of Gersinda Larvik and Félicien Rosier. He was the elder brother of Druella Rosier, and through her he had three nieces: Bellatrix, Andromeda, and Narcissa Black. The Rosier family hailed from Auvergne, France, although Vavřinec and his sister were both born in the heart of Paris. The two siblings fell subject to the dark influence of Grindelwald very early on in their youth when the wizard arose to power once more after his initial imprisonment.

Both Gersinda and Félicien were in favor of Grindelwald's regime and were his loyal devotees since the early 1920s, donating a sizeable amount of their riches to fund their master's campaign in the hopes that he would shield them from the threat Muggles posed to wizardkind.

When Vavřinec was eleven, Félicien was taken into Ministry custody due to his involvement in Grindelwald's sinister plans to overthrow the existing magical government. As a result, the Rosier family left France after Monsieur Rosier was declared innocent and released from detention, aided by bribes and testimonies from influential pure-blood aristocrats. Unfortunately, the Rosiers move to England did little to alleviate the tensions that followed them, as whispers of their past lingered in the air like a dark cloud.

During Rosier's first few years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, many of his peers believed that he was sent by Grindelwald to spy on Dumbledore. Rumors circulated around the school quickly, and by his second year, Vavřinec found himself isolated, the target of suspicion and mistrust. He had very few friends, mostly fellow pure-bloods from elite families like his own, although their companionship often felt shallow and transactional.

The reputation Rosier gained for himself caught the attention of Tom Riddle in his fourth year, the boy having come from the Muggle world—just another vermin to be crushed by the feet of those who held superiority over him. To Vavřinec, the Muggle was just an insignificant bug, a mudblood who wasn't worthy to even be a thought in his mind. In spite of this, he couldn't help but find himself intrigued when Riddle started accumulating followers, many from pure bloodlines that wouldn't dare associate themselves with filth such as the boy their children appeared to worship.

Vavřinec watched with a mix of disdain and curiosity as Riddle's influence grew, attracting students who once held the same prejudices he did. It was a perplexing sight, witnessing the way Riddle spun his web of purist ideology, stressing the significance of power and supremacy while still possessing the very traits Rosier claimed to despise. People seemed to gravitate toward him, like a moth to a flame. It was almost laughable, but also it was a bit threatening, especially when Vavřinec began noticing Tom’s gaze lingering on him for longer than was necessary. There was a glint of predation in his eyes that always seemed to grow stronger whenever the Muggleborn spared Rosier even the most ficklest of glances.

There was no doubt that Riddle wanted Vavřinec to become part of his collection of pure-blood heirs, but he tried to resist the temptation and subtle urge to do so. Of course, Rosier started to become curious. What could this boy possibly be offering his newfound cult that persuaded them to follow him? Vavřinec knew that he wouldn’t have the answer unless he joined. It would defile his very beliefs if he ever affiliated himself with such an impurity, no matter whether or not Riddle seemed to uphold the same values as many other purist supremacists. A hypocrite to his own origin, that’s what Tom was.

Regardless of what he thought before, it wouldn't be much longer until Vavřinec would fall victim to the same seductive cunning Riddle used to rein in his pure-blooded classmates, becoming one of his most trusted companions as a Knight of Walpurgis. In later generations, the small organization would later flourish into a group of Tom Riddle’s most elite followers called the Death Eaters, comprised of witches and wizards with a strong hatred for the Muggle world.
