Wammy's has houses now! And students!
What you see is a snapshot of december 2003.
Refresher:
Zimt boarding school Wammy's for twice exceptional kids has a capacity of ~60 kids. These are not all of 'em but I ran out of breath at 39 (they have 52 kids at the time, so 13 to go yippee).
They take in kids who tested 130+ in an official IQ test. Kids over 150 are invited for a private talk with L and given a special assignment. Here's the 150+ kids at the time:

What's still missing are the house masters/matrons. I think Mrs Parrey is the house matron of Marple.

I know we’ve talked about this a lot already but up to this day Mello’s magical recovery after he nuked his whole devil den still baffles me lmao.
So as you guys have already known, after Mello blew up his mafia base in LA, he got third-degree burns (at least ig) extending from his face to his back and possibly several internal injuries. Yet within a week he literally did all the heavy lifting and flew right to Near’s HQ in the other side of the States. He got back in the game almost immediately with his gorge hairline and rockstar ragged golden locks still miraculously intact.
Even though it may look a little bit unbelievable for such a grounded and realistic show like DN, I believe O&O made that deliberate choice for the coherence in narrative and aesthetic matters too. And I completely respect that, even love that a lot as well. It’s a great piece of symbolism with our homeboy Mello as a burnt martyr in the pursuit of Kira, and it makes a great manifesto of how far he’s willing to become the best instead of just a victim of his fails and falls. You can read my previous post here in case you wanna dig more into my view on this.
Yet if you guys are still interested in exploring his post-explosion injuries, like realistically, also the severity and the medical procedures Mels might had undergone, then come along with me.

(I'll put a pic here for reference so you guys don't hafta search up later)
Alors, just gonna remind you I’m not a doctor with any certified medical background so please don’t come for me in any case, but in order to help you guys visualize Mello’s injury situation more clearly, I’m gonna take a very similar real-life case of my beloved Formula 1 idol Niki Lauda as an example (referencing real cases in history as evidence is my biggest forte and habit so bear with me even if it might sound a tad dry). In 1976, Niki Lauda crashed his car into the barrier while racing on the Nurburgring circuit with terryfing speed like a bat outta hell. Deadly flames engulfed his Ferrari car immediately and he was trapped for nearly 1 minute in the fire until other drivers successfully pulled him out of the cockpit. This accident left huge burn scars on Niki that quite disfigured his head, scalp, face and some other parts of his body, like his ear also. To be honest, Mello’s scars are remarkably similar to his.
(This is Niki before-during-after his injury. You guys can see the resemblance right? His situation is very similar to Mello yet fyi his reserved personality and strategy in racing reminds me of Near a lot, as he always made it clear he'd keep the percentage of risks on track to at most 20% and once the odds got worse, he went home.)
But the burns weren’t the fatal parts in this situation. Most importantly, Niki Lauda inhaled a ton of toxic fumes and gases. Mello definitely did too, as he even used bombs to wreck his den (so count the debris dust as well), and obviously it took more than 1 minute for him to successfully get out of the ruins. Inhaling toxicity like that leads to severe lung injury, blood contamination, as well as chemical damage in other internal organs.
Now for the medical procedures. Surgeons performed skin grafts on Niki’s face over weeks using skin taken from his thigh to patch the burnt areas. His hairline was completely ruined and unfixable as you can see in the pic. Of course they have to perform blood transfusions on him daily as well. As for the lungs, doctors inserted a long suction tube down his throat to clean all the toxic fluids and it left painful bruises all over his lungs, as well as huge risk of pneumonia and sepsis. And these are precisely the kind of intense, invasive procedures that Mello would likely have had to endure realistically. I know some of you guys are going to question me about the gas mask our homeboy picked up before he pressed the nuke button. Well I ain’t gonna lie, he of course did wear a rather sketchy gas mask to offer his lungs more protection, yet that’s still nothing compared to the sheer force of such destructive explosion. Come on guys, he used real *bombs* (wink wink). This man always plays for keeps.
As Mello’s scar goes through half of his face, he might have to get an eyelid surgery like Niki did, which forever impaired his ability to blink normally and I believe his left ear was completely deformed behind those golden locks too. Ah I haven’t talked about the ruptured eardrums as well. Maybe the only perk Mello got from it is that half of his face doesn't sweat anymore.
Somehow my overly detailed ahh headcanon that Mello refused to use anesthesia when they cleaned and treated his burnt eyelid daily to avoid affecting his alertness, which is also a defining trait of his character, and that makes sense especially when he’s an internationally wanted criminal with police steady watching him, everyday they clocking him. After all, I know he’s definitely not the type who trusts any one but himself in such life-threatening situations. That procedure is extremely excruciating if you actually think about it.
After 42 days (which was considered an unbelievable amount of time for recovery from such severe injury), Niki Lauda got right back in the game to beat his biggest bestie rival on the grid James Hunt and ofc with those burn scars were still fresh and sometimes even bled hard when he drove the machine with full throttle.
Let alone our gangsta who actually blew up his whole base with actual bombs while he was still inside it, with no bomb-proof suit or any kind of special protection aside from his gas mask, and he still managed to escape just in time from the whole task force with far better equipments. Then by sheer perseverance made out of pure kevlar, homeboy traveled from the West Coast to the other side of the States within ten days. It’s no joke he gave his own body a really tough deadline for recovery. Trust me, just a flight from LA to NYC alone is enough to drain my entire energy and I always hafta spend the whole afternoon sleeping to recharge myself (thank god the vice-versa flights are usually shorter), so we can say Mello is nothing short of tough. And by the time he arrived at SPK’s HQ, he’s already dressed in his iconic visual kei drip to shove his gun at Near’s giant head and get back his lethal face card from childhood (literally).
Not to mention his mental traumas, though that’s a topic many people have already explored through deeply thoughtful and refined writing. I just wanna point out that, for someone like Mello who is clearly super well-groomed and takes great care in how he presents himself to the world (I believe the trait is a big part that comes along with his inferiority complex, as he can be a sucker for external validation even more than he’d actually admit), the explosion might have impacted his sense of self-security. You guys may argue that it makes him much cooler aesthetic-wise and I can’t agree with you more, post-explosion Mello feels even more stunning to look at, but we mainly feel that way because we are offered the reader’s viewpoint. Seeing how meticulous Mello is in dedicating to his look and outfits and how deep his insecurities are rooted, there’s no doubt appearance has always been his forte and pride. Through the reader’s viewpoint, the wounds kinda give him more of this visual kei rockstar-esque appeal, yet in fact it literally damaged the entire immaculate appearance he went the extra mile to maintain in the very first chapters of arc 2. This is why I wouldn’t say he doesn’t give much of a damn about his damaged look, if not to say it affected his mental health a great deal.
Also in an AU where Mello was still alive after Kira was defeated, aside all the traumas he has been through, he would have to spend the rest of his lifetime dealing with lung problems to a certain degree, and that’s tragic as hell to me. I think this information might help for those who wanna delve into this AU, or at least I hope so.
Now I think it’s easier for you guys to imagine all the physical and mental pain Mello had to go through just to confront Near again, in full pride. And for that, Mello will always have my full respect.
My debatably Catholic anti-saint.
P/s: Okay why my blog is slowly looking like a Mello shrine even though I dedicated it for Near in the first place. But whatever, who cares, I love them both wholeheartedly, and recently I’ve been in a mood for Mello’s tragedy as he overwhelms my shower sessions with thoughtful streaks so I'll just live with it for the moment. My Nearposts can wait I guess, as I depend on my mood a lot.
P/s 2: I forgot to say this but I think @zimt-deathnote’s visual depiction of a medically realistic injured Mello is totally spot on. What a super job. That’s exactly how I picture Mello’d look like post-explosion if things took a more realistic turn.
#excellent analysis#i feel very honored#thank you so much <33#i researched burn wounds for mello accuracy#no way his hair survived when the skin UNDER IT burned...#screw canon in that regard

Has there ever been a rosary that you saw and immediately thought it was cool? If so, what did it look like?

This is my favourite one. It was my grandmothers once upon a time. She won it in a poker game she was cheating at. Won this, cash and a gun. Three days later we had to bury my grandfather. Food poisoning.
