today, july 18 2025, marks six years since the kyoani arson attack. six years ago, a man doused kyoto animation's studio 1 building with gasoline, and then he set it on fire. killing dozens of people and injuring dozens more. it was one of the deadliest massacres in japan since the end of world war 2.
the arsonist claimed that kyoto animation plagiarized his own works in their anime after he submitted his novel for a contest. so he killed them for revenge
and here were the things he said were plagiarized:
in the anime free, they fly a banner reading "swimming club advances to local tournament". in the arsonist's novel, there were banners
in the anime tsurune, someone buys meat at a discount. in the arsonist's novel, the main character buys meat at a 50% discount
in the anime k-on, a character says they repeated a grade. in the arsonist's novel, a character gets told by a teacher that they might be forced to repeat a grade
that was really all it was
a lot of people know about the arson attack but not about the details of exactly why he did it other than "plagiarism". so many wonderful people were injured and murdered just for this bullshit
kyoto animation is responsible for the production of some of the most beloved and iconic anime ever made. if you watch anime, you have probably seen a kyoani show. and if you have not seen a kyoani show yet, you should.
air, amagi brilliant park, beyond the boundary, clannad, free, full metal panic, k-on, kanon, liz and the blue bird, lucky star, the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya, nichijou, a silent voice, sound euphonium, tsurune, violet evergarden, and so many more. they worked on crayon shin-chan, doraemon, pokemon, gundam, ghibli films.
since the arson attack, kyoani has worked on and released a few other anime series and movies. but this anime season, summer 2025, is the release of their first new anime series in several years: CITY the animation. it is a delightful adaptation of a manga by the creator of nichijou.
youtube
the animation, music, vocal performances, and direction are all amazing. so far it is just plain awesome. a fun show about life, being an adult, and moving forward. if you are in need of an anime to watch, especially if you do not want something too intense, give CITY a look. it is silly, it is colorful, and it is a good time.
I think one of the best things to do now is just to celebrate and support kyoani. they made something fantastic again. and apparently a lot of folks had no idea CITY was even getting an anime! it did, it is, and here it is! so if you are up for giving CITY a watch, and you wind up liking it, I hope you will consider spreading the word.

The Kelantan state government is considering installing anti-LGBTQ+ signage in public spaces, following Terengganu’s lead. Thailand has legalized same-sex marriage 🥹🌈❤️

This bill passed in the senate with overwhelming support, 130 to 4, making it only the third region in Asia to embrace marriage equality (behind Taiwan and Nepal).
I cannot overstate how much it means to me to see this kind of progress. When I think of all the lives this law will change, and how much it will likely improve the climate for LGBTQ people in Thailand, I feel really emotional.
There's still a long way to go, with same-sex relationships being illegal or heavily discriminated against in most areas of Asia. I think it might surprise some of my readers to know that men in the military who have same-sex relationships face up to two years in prison in South Korea, for example. In Malaysia homosexuality is illegal, with penalties of up to 20 years in prison.
Of course we already know that China has been heading backwards for years. Just this week a popular lesbian bar in Shanghai was forced to close its doors.
Still, this news out of Thailand is very exciting, and something to celebrate. Happy Pride everyone! 🥳

i dont think the 1975 understands that what they did last night will probably put the lgbt movement in malaysia back by like 20 steps.
its already so hard for us to talk about it and help people understand but now all they will be thinking about is how this concert had a man kiss another man in a drunken stupor.
while im glad that for many people around the world, they are able to live freely and love who they love. but this is not the case for us living in places where it is illegal and punishable by law.
im not saying that i think the law is right or just. but i am saying that we do what it takes for us to survive.
and most of the time, surviving means loving quietly to live another day.
(if you think 1975 getting banned is harsh, think about the potential backlash a queer person might face here)
ALSO to the people who are not from Malaysia or South East Asia in general, not everyone here is homophobic, so stop grouping all of us together like that. its easier for you to make comments saying that the whole country/region is homophobic but that isnt true.
we're here.
listen to us.

There's something that has been stuck in my head since I finished Turnabout for Tomorrow, which is the last ending video.
I'll preface this by saying I've only played the games this year so I'm very new to everything, but I wonder if other Clay Terran enjoyers spotted the same thing:

I DON'T KNOW THERE'S THIS GUY THAT LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE HIM?????? The hair is not perfectly the same but?????? HUH??? Has anyone else already noticed this before? I have to know

cool how once a man gets famous enough he can pretty much just rape as many women as he wants and experience zero consequences. but don't worry guys if you try and have a basic conversation about how women are still an oppressed minority group a bunch of people are going to crawl out of the woodwork salivating over themselves to make sure the conversation becomes about how Men Are Harmed By The Patriarchy Too

dont get me wrong, there are plenty of amazing female characters in the series, but it often feels like Ace Attorney writers are allergic to having a woman in the spotlight or having a fully developed arc. how am i eight games in and only played 3 cases against a woman prosecutor and only 5 1/2 (only ONE of which was a full length case btw) cases played as a woman
(afaik you dont play as a woman in Investigations or PLvsPW but i have yet to play them so i make no claims)

HEEELPPP a six year old just came into the nature center and she had SO many questions. it's pouring rain and nobody else is here but her family so non-stop for an hour she had my full attention. by the end of it i had half my field guides open to various insects and mammals and birds and she just kept going.
she became extremely fixated on bigfoot and asked about the ways people try to prove its existence until I was explaining DNA to her, and she asked such thoughtful questions! she said, "what if someone found a skull they thought might be bigfoot, and there was hair left over. could we use DNA from hair to prove it's bigfoot?" but before i could answer, she said, "but if you don't have a living bigfoot that you KNOW is bigfoot, to take hair from, how could you know this hair from this dead bigfoot is really bigfoot hair?" !!!! what an awesome question!!
so this 6 year old and i started discussing control groups in scientific studies and she was so engaged!!
then the bigfoot talk led to discussions of extinction which led to dinosaurs, and she said, "what I don't understand is why people say dinosaurs are extinct, but they also say that dinosaurs became birds. how could they all be extinct if they became something else?"
she asked questions that really challenged me in that figuring out how to answer them on the fly in a way that's digestible wasn't totally straightforward.
a few minutes ago, the adult with her said it was time to go and get ice cream and she said, "can't you see I have 1,000 more questions to ask? i have to just bloooowwww them all out now so you don't have to answer them later."
I saw my younger self in her so much LOL. They said they're coming back tomorrow and I said, "I won't be here, but my colleague knows even more than I do!" And she said, "Well, I hope so. He's gonna need to."
