I think it sucks when you’ve been told that any sort of intense emotions; even depression or showing sadness, is considered dangerous or socially rude. I have been stuck in this middle stage for a loooong time and have essentially become my own antidepressant. Never too happy never too sad and feeling very confused but I can’t be confused because that’s bad to show that you’re confused so I don’t ask questions and just do. Not exactly empty per-say but not exactly fulfilled. That intermediate stage of emotions, I’m whatever anyone wants me to be with a leash. I’m supposed to respond this way? Ok, I will. I don’t understand it but I won’t question it, I won’t show that I’m questioning it, I can’t show it. I must have full confidence in my false expressions and rely that the other person I’m speaking too doesn’t get confused by me. It’s complacency.

The worse feeling of masking is feeling like you failed to please someone else because of what you’ve been taught to act. You did everything right, and yet, you were responded like you did everything wrong. Conversations and communication is a very complex thing, there is no “standard” to how to talk to someone, so don’t try to script. That’s how I put it. Be true to yourself more and slowly you’ll open up feeling like this life thing isn’t so bad after all. Trust me, when you get into that adult world nobody gives a shit if you’re stretching your fingers or fidgeting to adapt, no one is gonna give a shit if you feel confused about something they said or what expression they made in response to you, 9 times out of 10 they’re gonna clarify and adults have no problem clarifying.

Autism therapy is exclusively made for a child to be around entitled children who are cruel, judge without question, and will maul you if they could. Once you are no longer a child and no longer in school it definitely feels like the worlds been flipped on it’s head, you just were yeeted off the abyss and free falling as you come to terms that grown ass people aren’t that cruel. Some are, the ones in the school systems most definitely; so is any wild animal stuck with a prey animal they dislike. In the open there’s places where those adults just leave, they don’t want to be associated with you and that’s whatever. It sucks but it’s better than being dragged by the digging claws of a teacher with one arm (yours with marks from nails slicing into your skin) and stabbed with a pencil because you were stimming at your desk(only later do you ever think “maybe that person was right, I was being rude, it’s my fault, I need to do better next time” and it’s gross). Adults irl prefer not to give a shit, no one cares. Maybe I’ve been so conditioned for so long that people care and I cared so much about whether people cared that it’s just tonal whiplash for me, first ever bar I go into as an adult, and it’s the most interested and accepting community of folks I’ve ever met. After that I think I cried for a long time in bed because I’ve never felt that average before. I was with people I was ONE of the people, and it was genuinely the most overwhelming thing I have ever experienced.
