It’s weird to grow up in a family where you know you’re loved but you don’t feel loved. And then later in adulthood you understand how almost impossible it seems to cross that distance and let yourself experience closeness, how otherworldly love feels now and how love feels unbearable at times. You flinch when someone tries to wholeheartedly love you. And over and over you see so clearly how you cannot be loved unless it's from afar and love is mixed with that familiar sensation of distance and coldness.

When Hades decided he loved this girl he built for her a duplicate of earth, everything the same, down to the meadow, but with a bed added. Everything the same, including sunlight, because it would be hard on a young girl to go so quickly from bright light to utter darkness. Gradually, he thought, he'd introduce the night, first as the shadows of fluttering leaves. Then moon, then stars. Then no moon, no stars. Let Persephone get used to it slowly. In the end, he thought, she'd find it comforting. A replica of earth except there was love here. Doesn't everyone want love?
Louise Glück, from "A Myth of Devotion" in Poems 1962-2012

LAUREN BACALL and HUMPHREY BOGART in THE BIG SLEEP (1946)
I mooned over him for days. We’d sit in his car, holding hands, talking, looking at each other, kissing. We’d exchange letters - I’d bring one that he would read after I’d gone, and he’d give me one that I’d read on the way home and twenty times after that. An example from Bogie’s letters: “I can only say that I’ve searched my heart thoroughly these past two weeks and I know that I deeply adore you and I know that I’ve got to have you.” It was high adventure - very romantic, frustrating and young. What any two people madly in love would do. - Lauren Bacall

I could be martyred for my religion. Love is my religion. I could die for that. I could die for you. My Creed is Love and you are its only tenet.
-John Keats
