For a second there, Mello is at a loss for words. It's hard to believe that anyone could be afraid of Misa, but he doesn't like to underestimate–especially when he's in a vulnerable position. “I don’t need protection. If you can dress my wounds, that’s enough.”

Those words are heavy. Hearing them feels like a gut punch, and Mello's mouth tastes sour all of a sudden. God, what is this. Her composure is unchanged, but who knows how long that'll last. “If I’m all you’ve got…” she scoffs, shaking her head. “You’re in even shittier shape than I thought. How'd you end up like this in the first place?”

Hmmm.. for that enemies to friends to lovers thing.. how about "If anyone lays a finger on you, I’ll kill them." Or "Maybe you’re not as bad as I thought you were. Maybe." For meronia. Those are my favorites >:)

I would read any fic with any of those lines between mello and near !! Especially a nice slow burn oohhh... I always want to write something like that but I'm so bad at things with actual plot :/ honestly ugh

It's easier when Near doesn't talk. Mello never knows when he's going to come out and say things like this. It doesn't make any sense. Feeling confused isn't his favorite, to say the least. Perhaps it's visible in his expression–the way his eyebrows draw together slightly and his nose twitches. "... Keep that to yourself."

Mello continues pulling on her leather pants, and resists the urge to sigh at Misa. For now, she’s not going to look at her. There’s a pause before Mello speaks; her hands are occupied, redoing the lacing at her belt. “Strong potential to interfere with my goals. You know that. Whether I want it is irrelevant,” she explains, sparing Misa a glance over her shoulder. “... You performed well.” As Mello praises her, her gaze flickers to Misa's exposed collarbone for a moment. She isn't expecting those words to come out of her own mouth, but they're true, regardless.
