2022 in the rearview mirror
Can I claim success???
When I started this in 2022, it was because I wanted to engage my artistic side more, to be more intentional in being more creative. So, I thought doing 1 sketch a day would be the way to go, and posting on Tumblr would make me accountable.
In a lot of ways - this worked! I posted ... close to 150 days of sketches. 142 sketches according to my . I did do more but I didn't post those. I also did 2 commisisons. Well, I drew 2 things for one commission. I finally did my comic book version of NaNoWriMo. I would say I've done a lot more art in 2022 than I have in any other year.
But I also learned this was a monumental task, and I failed at it. Life just got in the way of doing 1 sketch a day - work, family, health issues, other interests. Not only was it hard to get inspired but finding the time to actually do it. And then the quality... I mean, yes, these are supposed to be quick sketches, but I know I can do better. I don't think these were representative of what I can do.
It's too bad I can't change my user ID. I don't think I'll be able to sustain 1 sketch a day, but I definitely want to keep this going. I'm thinking 1 artwork a month. That'll relieve some pressure from needing to post daily. And hopefully let me create something that really shows my skills.
So here's to 2023. Looking to post at least 1 complete artwork a month. With scattering of sketches here and there. Coz sometimes my brain wants to draw something else.

Got asked to draw a DnD character with the following description - basically a cactus cowgirl. Except I missed the part where she's supposed to be short! Like 4 feet short! Oh well, back to the drawing board. Literally.

Totally unexpected
Wow - who knew my Skulduggery Pleasant posts would be so popular? Definitely not me. The whole series was popular enough to have 5 trilogies so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that there's a fanbase. I guess I should go do more Skulduggery art. Both the Detective, Valkyrie, and all the others. I do want to try drawing Mr. Bliss and a Cleaver. I guess I better start working on that.

Yet another Skulduggery Pleasant. This one I started then my 10yo inked, colored, and lettered it to finish it.

Quick sketch of Skulduggery Pleasant. This was an book-on-CD we had during our road trip and I just took a liking to it. Maybe it was the voice reader (Rupert Degas), who just helped bring all the characters to life. Or just the story themselves. Whatever it was, I finished the first 3 books and looking to finish the 4th during the company's year-end shutdown.

The Pumpkin King himself! Did this one for Halloween, and meant to post it but didn't get around to it until now.

I finally did it! The last time I ever did any comic book page was in college, when I did a weekly page for a good 4 (I think) semesters. Ever since I've been wanting to do another, but never found the time, energy, or motivation. I had ideas in my head. I'd almost get started. But never went anywhere with it. Well, ever since I heard about NaNoWriMo, I've wanted to do it, too, except as a comic book, not a novel. And I finally did it! Introducing my comic - VARIANT! (ok, working title)
I kept it simple, just 4 pages. I figured I can do this; any more and I might get stressed. It is not my best work, but I got it done.
Things I learned: 1) drawing on a glass surface sucks. Looking to get a paper-like screen protector. 2) I need to learn Clip Studio Paint better. 3) I need more practice.

Day 113 - 136. Not another commission but I had another idea for that commission that I wanted to do. So, still Rogue and Gambit, but in the style of "She's All That" movie poster. I was also using Clip Studio Paint for the first time, instead of Autodesk Sketchbook. Definitely some learning curve there.

Days 92 - 112. So I got asked to do a commission. And I realized that I couldn’t do a daily sketch and do the commission. So the daily sketch had to go. But I think this more than makes up for it. Again, the point here is to engage my artistic side more this year, with the daily posts as my version of accountability. Doing a commission has built-in accountability.
