Garnet var. Spessartine - Shengus, Skardu, Gilgit Valley, Pakistan, 3.3 cm x 3.7 cm x 1.9 cm. Cut stone 6.52 carats. Jeff Scovil Photo. Donald E Ricks collection. Depending on lighting with the spessartine specimen it lights up and flashes deep orange red fire. I have been asked to display at the Denver Gem & Mineral Show this year and I’m looking forward to putting a display together. #spessartine #spessartinegarnet #garnet #garnetjewelry #geology #Crystal #gemstone #rockhounds #rockhounding #geology #geologist #gemologist #mineralshow #minerals #naturalgemstone #instacrystals #crystalshop #gemshop #crystals #gemstones #gemporn #mineralporn #crystalporn #geologyrocks #fineminerals #finegemstone #crystalline #geologypage https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp8klP4vr1e/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Zoisite (Var.) Tanzanite Merelani Mines, Arusha, Tanzania 3.5 cm x 1.6 cm x 1.3 cm. Cut stone 2.8 carats. Jeff Scovil photo. Beautiful unheated gem tanzanite crystal with (God forbid) considerable 'gem rough' within the crystal that would cut larger stones than the example provided here. There is no damage to the crystal other than the contact at the bottom from extraction. First recognized in the year 1967, the stone is rare in the terms that it is only found in one mine near Mt Kilimanjaro, in the country of Tanzania. This is the only mine in the world that produces gem tanzanite crystals. Tanzanite is 1,000 times rarer than a diamond; the stone is expected to be completely mined out in the next couple of decades, which further increases the rarity of the stone. Tanzanite is in the top 10 rarest minerals on earth. Tanzanite has the mineralogical attribute to be trichroic and appears different colors in different lighting at different angles of the axis. Tanzanite was formed 585 million years ago. Many people are of the opinion that tanzanite’s colors are superior to sapphire. #tanzanite #tanzanite #tanzanite #Crystal #gemstone #rockhounds #rockhounding #geology #geologist #gemologist #mineralshow #minerals #naturalgemstone #instacrystals #crystalshop #gemshop #crystals #gemstones #gemporn #mineralporn #crystalporn #geologyrocks #fineminerals #finegemstone #crystalline #geologypage #metaphysical https://www.instagram.com/p/Co5n9BnP1fc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Andradite var. Demantoid - Antetezambato Demantoid-Topazolite Mine, Anetetzambato Maherivaratra Commune, Maherivaratra Commune, Abanja District, Diana Region, Antsiranana Provence Madagascar. 7.5 cm x 8.2 cm x 3.8 cm (largest xls 1.8 cm x 1 cm). Cut stone 4.2 carats. This is a rather large cabinet specimen which is rare for a mineral that is already rare. The white matrix was limestone which has been, amazingly, metamorphosed (metasomatized) into garnet in ancient geological time. Incredible origins for a matrix garnet specimen, and yet another reason to value this deposit so highly. Demantoid was first discovered in Russia's Ural Mountains in 1851, and from that time through the early 1900s they were popular in Russia and used in the finest jewelers' workshops, often seen in Carl Fabergé's jewelry and precious objects made for the Czars. The 4.02 carat cut stone is quite large for the species considering that any cut stone over one carat is rare. A good part of faceted cut demantoid’s popularity is attributed to its high dispersion. An example of dispersion is the facets of a diamond which act as a prism to refract light and split it into a spectrum of rainbow colors. Demantoid garnet has a higher dispersion than diamonds. #garnet #garnetjewelry #demantoid #demantoidgarnet #demantoidgarnets #geology #Crystal #gemstone #rockhounds #rockhounding #geology #geologist #gemologist #mineralshow #minerals #naturalgemstone #instacrystals #crystalshop #gemshop #crystals #gemstones #gemporn #mineralporn #crystalporn #geologyrocks #fineminerals #finegemstone #crystalline #geologypage #me https://www.instagram.com/p/CnVB_NPvQGa/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Beryl var. Morganite - Urucum Mine, Galileia, Minas Gerasis, Brazil 5 cm x 5.2 cm x 2.7 cm. Cut stone 5.76 carats. Brazil’s Urucum pegmatite is known for its fine morganite beryl crystals, considered by many to be the best in the world for this popular gem mineral. This morganite specimen is unique because there were few small cabinet size specimens that came from the mine. The interior of this specimen is flawless faceting material which would produce a 20 – 30 carat faceted stone. The Urucum mine produces cut morganites that are often referred to as Cor-de-Rosa in which this cut stone reflects with that color. #morganite #beryl # #tourmaline #tourmalinejewelry #tourmalineslice #tourmalinespecimen ##gemologist #mineralshow #minerals #naturalgemstone #instacrystals #crystalshop #gemshop #crystals #gemstones #gemporn #mineralporn #crystalporn #geologyrocks #fineminerals #finegemstone #crystalline #geologypage #metaphysical https://www.instagram.com/p/CmfYS-8PTvh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Beryl var. Aquamarine with Albite - Skardu, Baltistan, Gilgit - Baltistan, Pakistan 5.9 cm x 3.5 cm x 4.3 cm. Cut stone 11.64 carats. There is a lot of Pakistani aquamarine in the marketplace, and I like to purchase material that is unique within my price range. I purchased this unusual aquamarine from a Pakistani miner many years ago and what drew me to it is the beautiful aesthetic with the snow-white albite ‘jacket’ along with the unusual etching. Regarding that, it’s interesting to note that about one third down the gem crystal it’s completely missing an etched section, but the lower two thirds show an un-interrupted growth pattern. The aquamarine is double terminited. Jeff Scovil Photo. https://www.instagram.com/p/CmPRTogviub/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Corundum var. Sapphire - Ratnapura, Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka, 3.5 cm x 1.6 cm x 1.5 cm. The cut stone is a fine Kashmir color and weighs 1.81 carats. Sapphire specimens of this quality are extremely rare and hard to find. A beautiful specimen I acquired many years ago. The crystal is double terminated and has sharp edges and is not river worn and rounded at all. 90% of all sapphires, such as this are heat treated. Heating a sapphire at high temperatures specifically dissolves inclusions known as "silk" and other impurities, making the gemstone more valuable. Heat treatment is the most desirable gemstone enhancement because it does not use chemicals to alter the stone. Jeff Scovil photo. https://www.instagram.com/p/CmICayAPvHR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Over the years with my collecting of high-quality mineral specimens, I have accumulated many cut stones as well. Many of the cut stones correspond with certain mineral specimens. These sets are called 'rough and cut.’ I recently pulled some of the rough and cut specimens out of my bank safety deposit box and I was able to catchup with photographer Jeff Scovil at the last Denver Gem & Mineral Show. I consider Jeff to be the heir apparent to Harold and Erica Van Pelt whose mineral photography was unrivaled and considered the best in the world. Jeff became the heir apparent and the acknowledged leader of mineral photography in the world once the Van Pelts left the scene. Jeff's work is featured in all the mineral magazines in the United States as well as Europe and is Associate Photographer for several of them. His work also appears in many gem and jewelry journals, as well as numerous textbooks. Jeff’s photos have appeared on hundreds of magazines covers and many mineral show posters worldwide. Jeff travels the world photographing for collectors, museums, dealers, and publishers. He also makes many public presentations on photography, mineralogy and travelogs. His work has taken him to many places including Brazil, Canada, China, Israel, Madagascar, Morocco, Russia, and most of Europe. The emerald specimen in this photo, I acquired while on a time sensitive trip to Cartagena Columbia. While sightseeing in Cartagena I was also rushing into as many jewelry shops as I had time for while there. After many hours I finally found a specimen of emerald that was suitable to bring home. I would have bought more if I had more time. I love the way Jeff has brought out the beauty of the calcite and the beautiful reliefs on the emerald crystal. All natural and undamaged. Beryl var. Emerald Cosquez Mine, Boyaca Dept., Columbia 3.7cm x 3.2 cm x 2.1 cm. Cut stone 2.53 carats. https://www.instagram.com/p/CmE9Cx7gEMf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Fluorite on Quartz - Buranpur, Madhya Pradesh State, India. 9.5 cm x 4.6 cm x 4.6 cm. Donald E Ricks collection. Perfect sphere of yellow fluorite set on top of crystalized quartz. Absolutely stunning specimen of one of the rarest red-orange colors of all fluorites snuggled as nest eggs into crystalized quartz. I love the 'wisp' of the fluorite crystal on the upper left-hand side left intact when they cut the geode. Scolecite - Pune District, Pune Division, Maharashtra, India. 14.2 cm x 13 cm x 3.5 cm. Donald E Ricks collection. This is a large spectacular multiple spray specimen of scolecite. I recently had the pleasure of Dr. Leonard Himes and his wife, Linda coming and spending the weekend at our home for a formal appraisel of the mineral specimen part of my collection. When I asked Leoard what specimens that I should potentially enter into the Richard Pearl competition for 'Best Mineral' at the Denver Gem & Mineral show he pointed out a couple including this scolecite. Leonard said to me "you don't see them like this very often." #scolecite #scolecitecrystal #geologist #gemologist #mineralshow #minerals #naturalgemstone #instacrystals #crystalshop #gemshop #crystals #gemstones #gemporn #mineralporn #crystalporn #geologyrocks #fineminerals #finegemstone #crystalline #geologypage #metaphysical https://www.instagram.com/p/Cfo11woA4ma/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
