Misery Bay on Manitoulin Island in Ontario is renowned for its alvars and large dolomite pavements. These flat slabs of stone were ground flat by glaciers during the last ice age. The area was covered by the Laurentide Ice Sheet 20,000 years ago and was only exposed 10,000 years ago. The land has been gradually rising since then, as it is no longer weighed down by the glacier

Field work chic 🏕🪨⛏ This last field course I was on was honestly very life fulfilling. Went into it not knowing anyone- afraid it would be social agony the whole time. Ended up making amazing friends, saw some awesome geology and solved some great puzzles. 5 stars, would recommend. #gay #stem #geology #geologyrocks #minerals #geoscience #school #gayboy #gayguy #cabin #lodge #camping (at Kaladar, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdrLwV6u9I0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Zoisite (Var.) Tanzanite Merelani Mines, Arusha, Tanzania 3.5 cm x 1.6 cm x 1.3 cm. Cut stone 2.8 carats. Jeff Scovil photo. Beautiful unheated gem tanzanite crystal with (God forbid) considerable 'gem rough' within the crystal that would cut larger stones than the example provided here. There is no damage to the crystal other than the contact at the bottom from extraction. First recognized in the year 1967, the stone is rare in the terms that it is only found in one mine near Mt Kilimanjaro, in the country of Tanzania. This is the only mine in the world that produces gem tanzanite crystals. Tanzanite is 1,000 times rarer than a diamond; the stone is expected to be completely mined out in the next couple of decades, which further increases the rarity of the stone. Tanzanite is in the top 10 rarest minerals on earth. Tanzanite has the mineralogical attribute to be trichroic and appears different colors in different lighting at different angles of the axis. Tanzanite was formed 585 million years ago. Many people are of the opinion that tanzanite’s colors are superior to sapphire. #tanzanite #tanzanite #tanzanite #Crystal #gemstone #rockhounds #rockhounding #geology #geologist #gemologist #mineralshow #minerals #naturalgemstone #instacrystals #crystalshop #gemshop #crystals #gemstones #gemporn #mineralporn #crystalporn #geologyrocks #fineminerals #finegemstone #crystalline #geologypage #metaphysical https://www.instagram.com/p/Co5n9BnP1fc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This sample consists of black wrinkly microbial mats, and green grey claystone from the 1.4 billion year old Velkerri formation, from northern Australia. The mats were dominated by cyanobacteria living on the bed of a shallow sea that covered northern Australia at the time. The organic matter contained lots of sulphur which was converted into pyrite during burial. You can sea the pyrite as the sparkly gold flecks in the close up of the black mats. This area of the sea was far from land so instead of depositing grains eroded from existing rocks, like sand, sediment chemically precipitated from the sea water. The sea was rich in iron and silica and so iron silicate clays formed on the sea bed. The iron is green because they're was little oxygen around for it to react with. This process of chemical sedimentation is very slow and so there was plenty of time for the mats to grow across the sea bed. This also means that other material can accumulate on the sediment that would be lost in areas of rapid sedimentation. So I've also found lots of volcanic ash and spherules in these layers. I've also found mysterious grains in these samples which may be impact spherules from a meteor impact, or perhaps even micrometeors too. We don't know what the banding represents. It could be seasonal growth of the mats, it could reflect how nutrient abundance changes, or could effect changes in the rate if sedimentation. It could even reflect all our none of the above. I'm going through these samples, documenting the sedimentary textures and deciding which samples I want to turn into thin sections to examine under the petro microscope, and then to digest in acid to extract the fossils from. #geologyjohnson #geologist #geology #geologyrocks #sedimentary #microbial #microbialmat #precambrian #mesoproterozoic #fossil #fossils #stromatolite #Australia #green #shale #mudstone #earlylife #proterozoic https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc-dI2mNRVF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Look at the colors in this piece of raw petrified wood! The rich red, orange, and earth tones make this a stunning sacred stone that is ideal as an altar piece, collector's piece, or focal point for meditation and manifestation. This piece comes from our homestead in the Arizona high desert. It was found, cleansed, and anointed with my Shaman Stone Ritual Oil.
