COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS (FRANZEN & MCLEOD, 2010)
Sampling has been an essential element of hip hop music since its inception (see: Rapper's Delight/Good Times). This documentary film, released in 2010, examines sampling through both a creative and commercial lens- discussing the legalities of the technique and attempting to answer the question of whether sampling is a legitimate art form or lazy theft. The film features appearances from hip hop luminaries such as Pete Rock, De La Soul, & DJ Q-Bert, all of whom rely heavily on sampling in their work, as well artists whose work as heavily been sampled like George Clinton & Clyde Stubblefield.
Give the drummer some.

HOPIE - DISCONNECTED
A few weeks ago, Hopie hit the YouTube to drop this short video over RJD2's "Disconnected", from the album Magnificent City. Vowing to drop the studio version of her 40 bars after the video reached 2,000 views, she blesses us this week with the studio track AND the vox for producers that want to take their hand at remixing the joint.

PUT THIS ON - "THE 'LO HEADS" (NY POLO RALPH LAUREN CULTURE)
Meet the 'Lo Heads. With roots in 1980s street gangs, these Polo Ralph Lauren enthusiasts have made "aspirational apparel" a lifestyle. They once had to boost their Polo from stores and fight to keep it on the streets. Today, their culture is worldwide, promulgated by hip-hop. Their hero is Ralph Lauren - a working class New Yorker who understood that the fantastical power of style can be transformative. Dallas Penn from The Internets Celebrities, a dedicated Lo Head (and former member of the Decepts crew) with a collection of over 1000 pieces of Polo apparel takes us on a tour of this remarkable fashion subculture.

SECLUDED JOURNALISTS - "OLD MAN" (feat. T-ROOT)
In celebration of 10 years since Secluded Journalists released our first and only album (to date) "Who Are We" AND to keep our 1 song every 10 year average, we present to you "Old Man". A song that fittingly describes our "coming of age" in HipHop and in life. This track also features our good longtime friend/Bay Area cipher legend T.Root better known to most as Gavin Grant who lays down an amazing guest verse. Initially just a song to celebrate the anniversary of our album, this song will now provide as a teaser for what is to come. After 10 years, nearly 3 albums worth of scrapped material, various home studios, 70 hour a week jobs, homelessness, crashed hard drives, DJ gigs, arguments, fractured friendships, and nearly retiring the group all together, we are proud to announce the long awaited Secluded Journalists album "Sometime Next to Never" will be completed in 2012. Please check back in with us as we plan to continue dropping new treats throughout the year. This is only the beginning. ... We're back. Secluded Journalists is Ayentee, Wonway, & (honorary member) Bullsh?t. 1996 to infinity...
