•The experiences of alterhumans of color get almost zero representation in the wider alterhuman community and that's really something that needs to change. This sounds like one of those pandering posts, though it really is not. My experience as an indigenous otherkind identifying individual is vastly different than the experiences of white alterhumans, due to my connection with my indigenous culture and because of my involvement in irl indigenous spaces, though documentation of experiences like mine are practically non-existent in the alterhuman community. Essays and discussions of non-white otherkin experiences often get no traction or are just buried between tons of other posts. This, coupled with the fact that mostly white spaces can sometimes be intimidating for people of color (myself included!) to talk about non-white experiences in, presents a serious problem. Being an ally to alterhumans of color often stops when it's personally inconvenient for someone, and that gets absolutely exhausting to deal with.

•Indigenous alterhumans are so fragmented across the alterhuman community, for example. There is almost nothing in indigenous otherkin tags, either because our experiences aren't seen or because ignorant people have forced us into silence. We don't have our own spaces, we don't get to discuss our experiences without a bodily white person in the community saying something like "I'm 1/10th cherokee, ya bro I feel you there". Even talking about discrimination we face can get us into an argument if we don't phrase ourself in a perfect way. Indigenous alterhumans being so fragmented across the alterhuman community is part of why I'm starting a digital powwow for indigenous alterhumans to share their experiences, though I don't want to be the only one sharing my experiences with being indigenous and otherkin. I really want this community to get to a point where indigenous alterhumans feel safe to talk about their experiences without fear of judgement or the fear of facing ignorance. I want to see panels about the experiences of alterhumans of color other than the ones I've hosted myself, our experiences are important to be heard in the community!

•In spite of being minorities in our own community and in spite of everything else though, I really do want to encourage my fellow alterhumans of color to share their unique experiences with the community. Our voices deserve to be heard and appreciated, even if we are so fragmented across the community. If you do face ignorance from anyone, try not to let it stop you from sharing your experiences and expressing yourself. I really want to see more essays from alterhumans of color, I want to see indigenous alterhuman experiences being brought into the spotlight, it's even important to discuss the challenges of feeling alone in a mostly white community. I mean hell, there's only one other indigenous maya person I know throughout the entire alterhuman community. Try not to let ignorance or fear discourage you from being your authentic self in this community. We shouldn't be suppressed nor fragmented in our own communities!

I have to form my thoughts more coherently but with the discussions i’ve seen on Metaphorical vs Literal physical therianthropy / general nonhumanity, I have always thought it extended to more than just physical identities. But I don’t think it’s talked about enough nor acknowledged nor understood at all. I have a theory that a lot of therians actually identify in a more symbolic or metaphorical way,, whether that is psychological or spiritual or physical or something else, they don’t all identify as a 100% Real, Literal animal, though that doesn’t mean they don’t identify as an animal at all. Identifying symbolically is still identifying, but the experiences between that and more literal identity are different, and I think the distinction is important.

I think it’s the main source of a lot of identity discourse in the community, because we are running on two different types of therianthropy. Neither are wrong, neither are invalid, and neither are “less animal” or have less depth than the other, but there is this incongruence between discussions because of it.

I hope this makes sense, and I hope my observations don’t come off as rude (i’m scared people will misinterpret my words). But I’ve thought about this since forever, and I really think we need to start considering it as a possibility, because then maybe (heavy emphasis on the maybe) this identity will be more understood, and you can only hope for less infighting…

iirc, the definition of therianthropy has never really excluded more metaphorical/symbolic IDs either, it only makes sense that a large portion of the community falls under it. You only have to identify as an ‘animal’, not just a Real, Literal, Scientifically accurate animal (would exclude theriomythics and fictotherians anyways)

-> (additional note: I want to make it clear that I’m not saying i’m excluded from any this either, my dog theriotype comes from grief after all, to deny its existence as partially symbolic/metaphorical would be to deny myself. please don’t interpret this as some “I’m not like other therians” tangent)

Coming from a taxpaying adult who saved up literally pennies to buy my first ever piece of gear:

Never will I understand the nonhumans that whine about how high-quality gear is expensive. It is a luxury, an art form, and an object that requires skilled labor, all at once. Of course it will be expensive. You don't need gear to live another day, but the artisan does in fact need that $230 so that they can buy groceries and keep a roof over their head. Lots of economies across the world are in the gutter right now and that won't change overnight, so until that artist can AFFORD to lower their prices, leave them alone.

If you have a problem with that then you can go ahead and fork over your cash to a soulless corporation pumping cheap, low-quality gear out as fast as God wills them to be. Surely your lust for material things surpasses the abuse the workers face, since you'd be willing to harass a worker from a much smaller company?

You can also make your own gear, but Heaven forbid I suggest doing something yourself to beings who are completely convinced they can't.

Never will I understand this entitlement, and honestly I don't think I want to or have to.

we need to normalize not even recommending or buying from a taxidermy fur seller if they do not state where their fur comes from or how it was harvested (and are HONEST about it. i don’t wanna see anyone selling a marble fox tail saying they got it from hunting and trapping.)

Like i love you therian community but this is one of my main issues with the community as a whole, the severe lack of vetting sellers is concerning but i understand that a lot of that has to do with the fact that nobody knows How to properly, so i really need to get my guide on how to do that finished and published lol 💔
