The bear of Salcedo is one of the most representative traditional masks endemic of the Galician Carnival (entroido). During the carnival, a neighbor dresses in the "bear" gown and frightens the inhabitants of the village, dirtying them with ash. Although the origins of the tradition are uncertain, it's believed to be celebrated to bring fertility and prosperity in the harvest season
