I was thinking about IM2 and I realized something:
In that scene in when Fury finds Tony in the donut, then takes him to lunch with Natasha, we’re meant to believe that Tony is really out of it and in obvious pain because he’s hungover. But do you remember how quickly he snaps to being himself after Natasha gives him the shot? As soon as she does, he’s not holding his head or mumbling or anything. And the way he was acting pre-shot looked an awful lot like how he was acting before a Rhodey found him almost passing out in his lab.
we weren’t (just) seeing Tony hungover. We were seeing the palladium poisoning at its worst.
Which means that after his last birthday party Tony just. gave up. He wasn’t changing his arc reactor core or trying a new element or anything else even though the palladium was seriously fucking him up. He told Pepper she was gorgeous and gave his suit to Rhodey and went to go die eating a donut in a donut. (Okay, probably not IN the donut. But I bet it wouldn’t have been long at all.) And if Fury hadn’t shown up he probably would have. …And now I feel like IM2 just reached out from 2010 and punched me in the gut.
