We see that our jokes led to some serious concerns, and would like to address them.
Your mod team engages in fandom in a very specific and isolated capacity: we read fic, we write fic, we run the Big Bang Challenge, and outside of Challenge-related duties, not one of us has actively or consistently used Tumblr in over two years. As such, we have not engaged in very many recent conversations about fandom beyond making 1DBB mod decisions. To us, and the parts of fandom we remain in contact with, issues concerning the fourth wall and fan comportment were a thing of the past (and jokes about Louis's height were just dumb jokes). We didn't think that it needed to be outright stated that we are huge fans of maintaining the fourth wall and doing what we can on our end to keep fandom entirely separate from the band and anyone affiliated with it - we assumed that prioritizing respectful fan engagement went without saying. We were wrong, and we are sorry.
To re-answer the questions posed to us on 10/24: Yes, 2/3 of us ship H/L. No, none of us fall under the category of ‘larrie’ or 'larry tinhat.'
We have received word from a number of participants that they do not wish to engage in a fandom institution that "permits" tinhats to participate. We do not have the time nor the inclination to thoroughly investigate every person who signs up for the Big Bang Challenge and make judgement calls about whether they are respectful 'enough'. Collectively, we hesitate to believe that any member of the band or their families would, at a glance, understand the distinction between shipping, headcanons, and tinhatting. As such, we feel that our "do not link this Challenge or any of its contents to the band/people affiliated with the band" rule is sufficient for maintaining our boundaries. To be specific and honest, we are not comfortable with an inclusion/exclusion criteria approach to our Challenge; we prefer to facilitate a space where everyone is welcome to participate if they choose to do so, provided they abide by Challenge rules. This has always been the stance the 1DBB holds, and it will not be changing now.
While we would obviously prefer for everyone to participate in our Challenge regardless of fandom-related attitudes, because it's our baby and we love the atmosphere of creation and joy that we have fostered for five years thus far, we also understand that other people have different perspectives and limitations than we do, and we respect those limitations. We're all about creating safe spaces for fulfilling fan engagement, and if we have to lose the work of wonderful writers who do not view this Challenge as a safe space for them, we definitely prefer that the creation of lengthy fanworks is still facilitated! To that end, we have put together a guide for running your own Big Bang Challenge, based on all of our collective experiences in this and other fandoms. You can find it here. If it's missing any information that you would like to see, or if you have also run a Big Bang Challenge in the past and would like to offer a different perspective, please don't hesitate to let us know!

hi! question: do any of the mods think larry is real?
of the three of us, one prefers other ships, one likes larry a lot as a ship but doesn’t tinhat it, and one insists that i write that they claim to make a point of cycling through tinhatting every 1d-related ship one day at a time because it’s more fun that way. i’m going to go ahead and clarify that this is the first i’ve heard of the tinhatting rolodex strategy from this mod, and the entire time i’ve known them they’ve been openly agnostic about everything (i have an email from that mod with the line “omg. liam and taylor swift. they could have fucked once. i don’t know! it’s possible! i hope they have!”) but the entire mod team will support our co-mod in their iterative tinhatting ways if they choose to continue with this approach.
so in sum: rarely-if-ever? i think?
THAT SAID! we do want to say a few words about the fact that we’ve gotten quite a few asks along these lines since this round of the challenge was announced, which is that: the point of all of this is creating fictional fanworks about characters who are based, approximately, on real people. what we care about is curating a space where people can create and share lengthy fanworks about characters they love engaging in behaviors they want to envision them engaging in.
our ideal challenge is one where no one feels like they cannot participate due to what they ship/feel/believe (EVEN if it’s that louis has ever ACTUALLY been honest about his ACTUAL REAL height, louis-always-overstates-his-height is an official 1dbb mod team stance/belief), and where everyone creates what makes their heart happiest, even/especially if it’s something that one or more of us mods don’t particularly care for or about. ideally, we want a big bang challenge with ample and equal representation of every ship/otp/ot3/ot4/ot5/otmore involving at least one current or former member of popular hiatused boyband one direction. we feel that ~who’s behind the curtain~ shouldn’t make a difference in the pursuit of these ideals. we also want to go on record as saying that to us, it doesn’t matter if you feel like you’re writing an account of your actual beliefs of what happens behind closed doors on tour, or if you honestly forget (as, i think, have we all...) that one direction actually exist in the real world and not just the basest levels of our imaginations. we want to create a space where everyone can allow that to not matter to them, either. fandom being what it is, we may not ever achieve this last goal but by golly, we’re going to try.
this is the last ask we will answer about the specific fandom spaces each mod occupies in their personal fandom engagement.

Who runs this exchange? (And are you conspiracy theorists?)
Sorry, we don’t reveal personal mod information! But we can say with confidence that none of us mods believe that Bush did 9/11, that GMOs are engineered by drug companies for personal gain (though we do acknowledge that seeds engineered to need specific, highly-priced fertilizers or otherwise be entirely ineffective are fucked up and further the continued blight of colonialism), or that vaccines cause autism, though a quick check reveals that the mods cannot reach conclusive agreement about the nature of JFK’s death. Hope this helps!
#Posting publicly because this is an Official 1DBB Mod Stance (tm) now#If you're talking about fandom theories the official stance is that we need more specificity because we have a diverse mod staff#from multiple corners of fandom#and several of us had different understanding of what thoughts are considered to be 'conspiracy theories' based on our corners#so a yes or no from us may not mean the same thing as a yes or no from you!

what's the reason for submitting summaries so early? i rarely know the plot that far into the process, and i'm worried about being able to submit an accurate summary at just the first check in.
hi! One of our most common pieces of feedback at the end of each round is artists wish that they had longer with the fic to work on art for their claims or otherwise have a more prominent role in the process. This way, the collaboration will last 3-4 months instead of one, maybe two months at the end of everything. The mod team are all writers (one also an artist), so we definitely feel you on the “uncertain plot” front! So the claims summaries at first check-in will be “projected summaries.” You are welcome to be up-front about whether you are still uncertain about parts of the plot (e.g., you can say something like “I am writing a Leverage AU focusing on X ship where Harry is the A, Liam is the B, Niall is the C [etc]; this will include 3-5 heists, one of which will include graphic violence. I’m still hammering out specific details, but I’ll probably include [things]”) or whether you have yet to settle between two plots (e.g., “I have 5k written about the relationship in [this context] but I’m still not sure if I want it to be a regular uni AU or a superpowers AU”). We also have a clause -- and artists will be apprised -- that you can change your plot entirely after summaries are submitted, PROVIDED the artist is on-board with collaborating on the new idea instead. If there are irreconcilable differences after change in a plot, for this round, there will be no penalty for being asked to dissolve a partnership through the collaboration timeline due date at the end of January.
hope this helps!

Hi so for the first check in is say summaries are also due? Does that mean the summary we will post to ao3 or like a summary of our fic so you guys know the direction it's going in
Hey there! This post hopefully explains everything a little better... essentially we’re looking for enough of a summary that artists can claim your work with a reasonable sense of what they’re signing up for!
