Before you read, I’d like to make it clear that (as you may already know) I did NOT create these characters. This drabble just came from my noggin and I couldn’t help but share! Tell Brianne how wonderful her characters are, cause, you know, they are.

liam payne is a good person. kind, maybe serious and stoic at first glance, but with a bursting heart that bled and expanded each day. always has been, always will be.

  liam was the kind of person that when he gave himself to someone else— gave his heart and his thoughts and worries— he gave himself entirely. it was just who he was. he couldn’t help but care so much, love so much, want to protect so much, and give give give.

  because liam payne loved to pamper his special someone. be it in a lovely night for the two, with expensive gifts, thriving with elation by pleasing his significant other, or with endless affection.

  sometimes, though, in return, liam wouldn’t get much back.

over the past few days, zayn had been thinking. stressing and worrying about his plans with jaimie and niall and how they’d affect him and liam. recently though, what he thought of more was when his brother was drunk.

  zayn could think of two occasions when his brother had far too much to drink. the first was years ago while the second time was only a few weeks back.

  he recalls the first time was at a club. zayn had insisted the two brothers have a night out. he imagined the result would be fun and get his mind off things. and get his mind off things it did.

  once he got him started with a beer and a shot for confidence, zayn encouraged him to head to the dancefloor where many pretty girls had already been making eyes at the two of them. but liam refused. he stated he didn’t have any good dance moves to offer (bold faced lie) and stayed at the bar the rest of the night.

  while zayn slumped next to him, he understood he shouldn’t push. liam didn’t want anyone but melanie. though he didn’t understand why, he didn’t question him. he’ll get over this with time, zayn told himself. he knew this type of grieving wouldn’t be a recurring thing. so he let him sigh and grimace and frown and gulp down.

  last time they’d had far too many drinks together was when harry and thea were ‘round their place. zayn had been far more gone than the three men, snickering and stumbling around. even if his brother was capable of handling a fire or sure to remember the events the next day, there was no doubt liam was much looser, much more comfortable— especially around thea.

  it was all really a big blur to zayn, like puzzle pieces strayed about since his senses weren’t as coherent as usual. but he did remember liam helping thea with the fire, leaning into her, rubbing her back, the way thea’s hands hid under liam’s enormous jacket.

  the two nights couldn’t be more different, but he found himself wondering.

  when he came back from his trip just one month ago, he noticed the changes between thea and liam. at first it didn’t anticipate as much uneasiness with him. he had other things to worry about and it was just thea and liam. but that didn’t mean he hadn’t kept a watchful eye.

  now, though, all he could do was worry. what kind of brother would he be if he didn’t? it was the least he could do. when the two had first met, liam was nothing but friendly and welcoming. made sure zayn knew he could always count on him. back then zayn had no idea why he cared so much, didn’t know how. however, as they grew up together, he learned it was effortless, their love.

  that’s why they looked after one another. why zayn didn’t fancy much the idea of leaving liam and the vineyard. why he feared even the idea of thea drifting away and leaving them as soon as the baby was born. scared of liam fighting and fighting and fighting for thea, all for it to be game over. he wanted his best friend, his brother to be happy.

zayn already knew thea made liam more than happy (as well as the other way around). no longer obsessively fussing about work, laughing along with thea while clutching her hand, eyes crinkling when he smiled as she talked. but, would it last? was it sure that liam would be able to give give give but also receive receive receive? so with his head whirling with confusion and tendrils of skepticism clouding his mind, he picked up the phone and dialed.
