As impressed as I am of 8 year olds doing triple axels, nothing can beat the admiration I have for Aljona Savchenco learning a 3A at 36 after giving birth ten months ago
It's been a tough couple of seasons for them after their groundbreaking junior successes, but I wasn't expecting the partnership to end at this point. Real shame they've stopped working together now.
I now have no Southern Hemisphere teams to root for until either of them re-pair with someone else. And even then I'll still miss this team.
There's a jarring contrast between what's going on with Alina, and then Liza coming up with a quad combo in her twenties at the same time. I hold out hope all of these girls will keep competing for a long time, but sadly Liza is both the outlier in Russian ladies skating and not quite at the top so who knows. I do wonder about the mindset the 3A have on their competitive futures.
I wonder what Sasha, Alena, Anna and other young Eteri girls think, when they see this happening? Do they think they鈥檙e going to be different or do they think that they too have a year or two before someone younger comes to seniors and takes their place at the top? I wonder what kind of conversations are going around at that rink. Obviously we don鈥檛 know what鈥檚 happening in private and I鈥檒l admit that I don鈥檛 that much about FS or it鈥檚 history yet. But when you see that an olympic champion is being pushed to retire at 17 isn鈥檛 that scary? I hope Alina manages to change coaches if she wishes to continue skating and I wish all the girls to be healthy and have long careers
I wonder how, if she puts the quad in her programs, this could affect the standings in RusNats.
Respect to Elizaveta and to Mishin.
The significance of Tuktamysheva learning that quad as a fully mature senior lady who is only weeks away from her 23rd birthday shouldn鈥檛 be underestimated.聽
That kind of crazy technical upgrade is some serious business. Congratulations to Mishin for standing by Liza through her ups and downs and helping her make these leaps forward.聽
