This morning I am also thinking about all the remnants coming to know Komaeda. Finding out about his diagnoses and his past and actually reaching a point of sort of understanding him. I think for some it wouldn't change much about how they feel towards him, but imagining others suddenly looking at him a bit differently and being like "yeah...I think I'd be a bit fucked up too." Like how complicated that would make their feelings towards him, to know that he's dying so violently from the inside out, and has been the entire time they knew him, and was when they treated him so (rightfully and understandably!!!!) roughly...For some i think that'd be really hard to untangle, because nothing they'd learn would excuse how he acted, but it changes it.

Over time them all becoming gentler towards him because of this understanding, harsher in other ways. Being able to joke with him and tease him about it, pushing the lines and not walking on eggshells around him anymore. It would be so strange for Komaeda, not having people either ignore him or treat him like bad smell or at worst a bomb thats about to go off. Just all of them becoming so comfortable with each other in a way that if their younger selves from the program, or even from school, saw them they'd be completely freaked out.

In the end, this would be the summit of all Nanami wanted for them too. In them all coming together and understanding each other, they honour her memory, and I think that would just be so lovely and healing for all of them too.

In an AU where they could be together, it's just so beautifully tragic. Nanami being the only person Kamukura really feels around. Something about this girl intrinsically makes him feel safe in a way no one else has. He's drawn to her by something he can't remember, but no matter what when he looks at her he wants to be by her and no one else, but he doesn't know why. It's just something inside him that calls out to her. He's never felt like that for anyone, someone who cuts through the monotony, and through to something human that he doesn't want to acknowledge he feels, because he's been told his whole short existence that he can't feel it.

Then there Nananmi, who looks at Kamukura and sees only the boy she lost. Her best friend that she let destroy himself, and now he's gone, and this new person is all thats left. But...He's still him sometimes. He's still her best friend, and in moments, she'll look at him and see Hinata, and though he's intimidating and powerful and cold...She can't let him go. She let him go once, and wont let it happen again. Guilt keeps her close to him, and that creates in her more guilt, because she can see that the way Kamukura behaves around her isn't how he acts around anyone else, that for some reason, she's special to him. He tells her about it one day, and it takes everything in her not to break. A love confession, a lifetime too late, through the lips of someone else, using the same voice that never found the courage to speak it.

So even though she's not good at romance, and not good at relationships, she lets him close. She tries her hardest, so he's never alone again.

And somehow, just like before, all her faults don't really seem to mean much to Kamukura at all. She can't help but wonder if that's Hinata's doing or Kamukura's. She hates herself a little bit for it.

Fascinated how both Chain of Memories and Days pull the video game sidegame nonsense "actually there was a female character who was totally super important, but not important enough to have been mentioned before" and yet makes it work

Sora and "Riku" fighting over Namine in CoM would have been egregiously annoying if it had been played straight like you might see in other games, but the memory manipulation twist explains everyone's behaviour and adds to the oppressive feeling of Castle Oblivion

Axel and Roxas never fight over Xion in the annoying usual romantic sense, but rather Axel conflicted over trying to convince himself that Xion isn't a real person to dampen the inevitable tragedy he can see coming where he'll have to pick one or the other since Roxas and Xion can't co-exist, and Roxas just tragically caught in the middle of the whole thing with little agency or ability to even understand what's going on. Xion's battle for agency and personhood and ultimate final decision to choose her own fate/demise is sympathetic enough that we root for her as a character, even though she is literally erased from memory to explain away why she was never mentioned in KH2

Most other one-off female characters in other video game franchise side games are usually pretty poorly written and disliked, but Namine and Xion are fan favourites enough that people have spent years now wishing to see more of them and give them happier endings. I just think it's neat
