In the foyer of the minor family mansion, looming large and ominous against dark paneled wood, is a floor-to-ceiling portrait of Gun.

This is Pete’s first time seeing it. He must have walked by it earlier without realizing; he wouldn’t have noticed it on their way out either if Macau hadn’t come to a screeching halt in front of it.

In the portrait, Gun sits tall in an ornate chair, smoldering cigar hanging from his fingertips, expression brimming with arrogance. The narcissism of it — the centering of this house’s power on its patriarch, with his sons nowhere to be seen — is not unusual for a mafia mogul like Gun. Pete loathes him for it anyway.

Pete glances at Macau, whose gaze is fixed on his father’s face, and then down at where Macau is thumbing restlessly at the lighter in his palm. The gesture is familiar; the lighter is Vegas’s. It was the only item the doctors found tucked away in the tatters of Vegas’s clothing, and Macau has not relinquished it since. Pete has numbed himself to the sight and sound of it flicking open and shut, matching time with the beeping of Vegas’s heart monitor as he and Macau keep vigil on opposite sides of Vegas’s hospital bed.

The click of the lighter echoes in the cavernous foyer, now, sharp and eerie.

“Macau,” Pete blurts out. He hefts the box cradled in his arms. “I’ll go put your things in the car.” And when that earns him no response, he mumbles, “I’ll be back.”

He staggers out of the foyer and down the front steps to the car, leaving Macau to his thoughts.

Pete’s own mind, fractured and worn from weeks of poor sleep, swirls with thoughts of dead fathers. They leave themselves behind in empty houses and littered beer bottles, in stacks of yellowed photos and stacks of debt, in bruises, old and new. Their specters are impossible to shake, even without massive portraits to contend with.

Pete hopes Vegas won’t keep the portrait if he… when he wakes up. The love sons have for their bastard fathers is a curse, but Vegas will not see it that way, not for a long time. Vegas will want to keep the shadow of his father close. He will not be able to help himself after a lifetime of chasing Gun’s approval.

Better the shadow of his father than the real thing, Pete thinks darkly.

He slams the trunk of the car shut, turns back towards the mansion and then, even through his daze, the scent of it is thick enough to choke — smoke.

Fire.

“Macau?” Pete yells, sprinting up the steps and rushing back into the foyer. Alarms blare in his head: Macau is in danger. He has to keep Macau safe for Vegas. “Something’s wrong, we have to get out—”

He skids to a stop.

Macau looks over his shoulder at Pete, face inscrutable, silhouetted as he is by the burning, blazing portrait behind him. The lighter glints as he flips it round and round between his fingers.

The flames crawl up the portrait, eating away at its domineering presence, incinerating Gun into worthless ashes at his son’s feet.

Prompt 14 -KP Superlatives (dealer's choice)

1. Best Hair -Tankhun, and not just because I have a thing for red hair...okay mostly because I have a thing for red hair. But what can I say, it was at least 3 different shades, it was snatched. It was fab. 

Runner Up -Kinn. I know Mile cut his hair for this role and once it was free, it seemed to take the opportunity to fluff up as much as possible. It’s gloriously wild and poofy. 

 

2. Best James Bond Roleplay - Kinn in the white tux

Runner Up-Porsche and his various spying on Kinn

3. Best Comedic performance in a serious role -Pol. I know the prevailing theory is that he was hired to be a companion for Tankhun more than a bodyguard, but he still has bodyguard training so he can actually protect Khun and he’s still included in bodyguard activities, but yeah.

Runner Up -Gun. This man never met a dramatic moment he couldn’t drag over the top kicking and screaming. 

4. Best Prop - Red Ducati motorcycles. These get ridden more than Porsche. Everybody looks good on them. Both Kinn and Vegas let Porsche drive. They actually have passenger helmets that look like they’d protect precious skulls(looking at you Between Us and Love in the Air).  

Runner Up - Kinn’s lucky gun. It’s just sexy and romantic that he gave it to Porsche as a token, okay. It’s also the gun Porsche is using when he’s contemplating killing the man who he thinks killed his parents (which is an interesting meta that I am not doing, nope).  

5. Best Unhinged Moment - Pool pants y’all. In a show full of unhinged moments, this one is supreme for me. I still shudder thinking about it. 

Runner Up - Atticwife Nampheung (pictured hearing this plot point for the first time)

I couldn’t decide. Both are unhinged in entirely different ways and are perfect examples of the tonal whiplash of that show(something I adore shrugs). 

6. Best Serious Performance in a comedic role -Jom. I side-eye the comic relief characters but KP was awesome with this? Like every character is heart-warming instead of annoying and still funny. I probably should have done an underrated character post for Jom tbh. I love him. I love the way he supports his friends, giving Porsche the money he won on the fight, staying up to the point of exhaustion helping Tem deal with his broken heart. For all his goofiness, he’s smart and observant and I still think he was deliberately fucking with Kinn, who even if he didn’t know he was Porsche’s boss, was clearly some rich guy out of his element and only there because he was crushing on Porsche. It’s a small role and it could have been just a throwaway part but it’s so much better than that because who he is says a lot about who Porsche is and shows why he became such good friends with the misfit gang. 

Runner Up -Yok. Definitely not an underrated character. I think we all know that Yok is the shit. But again, she’s not just funny and fabulous, she’s smart and she loves Porsche and rolls with all the weirdness he brings with him and gives him great advice and becomes a safe person for Tankhun. She turns what could have been a caricature into the only mature, caring, functional, non-evil “adult” character in the show. 

7. Best Product Placement - Peppermint Field Black Inhaler. I know it seems like the bread is a shoo-in here, but hear me out. Black Inhaler was willing to let their product be used during illegal underground fighting and public sex. The Bread is great but it can’t compare to that. 

Runner Up -Bread obvs

8. Best Facial Feature -Vegas’ smirk

Chay’s doe eyes

Kim’s killer glare/dead-eyed stare/flirty smize (the boy does a lot with his eyes)

9. Best Visual Joke - Kinn reading a coffee-table book about coffee while waiting on Porsche to bring him coffee. 

Runner Up-Pol whipping out a finger gun 

10. Best Use of A BL Trope -  Spongebath. Using this comedically as a deliberate seduction technique, basically acknowledging that it’s kind of ridiculous, works very well, letting Porsche’s goofball side and Kinn’s clueless side really shine. It also lets their uncontrolled horniness and Porsche’s ass shine -right in front of Pete’s salad eventually, but oh well. 

Runner Up(s) - Baby is a clumsy bunny(which I think is what @absolutebl calls it, I couldn’t find the exact post)  -the show uses Porsche’s literal tripping as a foreshadowing of his figurative trip up, showing that while he can talk the talk of a bodyguard i.e. ... wear the snazzy suit, he can’t yet walk the walk. He proves that by his behavior on his first bodyguard gig. 

Singing - Can I say that @AbsoluteBL’s hatred of this trope makes me giggle because my mother hates singing so much that I had to verbalize an SNL musical sketch to her instead of letting her watch it? Anyway, this one is pretty obvious, but still notable because they didn’t just let Jeff, Mile, and Barcode show off their pipes. They wove music in as a subplot that allowed it to stand as a character marker for not just Kim, but Chay and Kinn. I feel like “Between Us” scarred me for life with bad singing awkwardly shoved into the plot for no reason, so KP gets so much love from me for this. 

Bonus: Best Hype Man 

Seriously, this guy is more excited than Gun about this coup attempt. He has been waiting years for this. And now my head-canon is that he used to work for the main family and when he was injured in the line of duty, Korn tossed him out and Gun took him in for spite and he’s nurtured a seething hatred for Korn since then. 

Bonus: Sexiest Gesture - Kinn’s finger come hither.

Prompt 12 -Identity

In the aftermath, the weeks and months that follow that day, they,all of them, form a strange, precarious detente. Porsche is Pete’s best friend and they talk every damn day. And it proves impossible to completely disentangle himself from the minor family business. They are still family, no matter how much Vegas wishes he could drain the blood from his veins, from Macau’s and replace it with something new and untainted. And Korn doesn’t let go of family -- not unless they’re in a coffin. The evil fuck kept his sister locked in a secret room for years. Vegas is still a little smug about that when he looks at Kinn. Sure his Pa sucked but not quite that much. 

Sometimes though, sometimes, Vegas looks at Porsche and he remembers that the first time his Pa looked at him like he was nothing, the first time he hit him was the day after Porsche “died”. And no matter how almost friendly they are now, he hates and hates. His mind is a red haze, filled with all the ways he could have/should have/would have tortured Porsche. And he has to leave. He goes to the lakehouse, takes a stack of books and waits. Pete always comes for him. 

But those days grow fewer as time passes. Vegas will never trust Korn, but turns out the bastard really is sick. And when he’s gone, things ease a lot. Vegas doesn’t even realize the slow turn from tenuous contentment to happiness, doesn’t notice when he stops expecting everything to fall apart, to be taken from him like always. He just knows that one day, he looks at Porsche and something dark and knotted inside him breaks apart and disappears. He looks at Porsche and he knows that it was never, ever about Vegas. There was nothing wrong, or broken about him. Pete’s lesson finally settles deep inside him. He could have never made his father happy, because he was the wrong son.

So, quick question:

See, I'm asking because I don't know how Korn could come back after everything that's happened...

We saw in the meeting Kinn held with their 'business' associates that the news of Korn's death wasn't just kept within their family, to lure Gun to act. Everyone thinks Korn's dead and that Kinn now has full control of the main family.

In this same meeting, Kinn kills two of their associates, who questioned his authority:

Now that could have been part of Korn's plans, to let his ruthless son take care of disloyal allies - fun fact: this whole argument started over the main family not being fast enough to sign a Russian dealer, Mr. Vadim, who Kinn was supposed to meet in the last episode before Korn very kindly rescheduled it.

But, even still - how would it look for Korn if he came back to life after both this meeting and the coup? What would all of the other gangs think of Korn's deception leading to the deaths of three leaders (the two here, as well as Gun's)?

I think that would be a step too far away from the 'fair and reasonable’ image Korn projects of himself. It would cause too much unrest among the underworld, and threaten the very power he's spent so long cultivating.

No - I think Korn is stuck here. Whether he intended to or not, he's now locked himself permanently in his compound.

Vegas twists the ring on his finger and replays the scene in his mind again. Porsche, wounded and vulnerable, and Kinn knelt by his side. At Vegas’s feet. He wonders what would have happened if he’d had time to pull the trigger– first on Porsche, then Kinn.  Chances are he would have been killed. They were still outnumbered on enemy grounds, he probably wouldn’t have even made it out of the garage.  His father would still be dead. And whatever future he had envisioned for his son had died with him. Still– he can’t help but think about it. If he’d succeeded, how would the main family ring have felt on his finger, instead?  “We’re back!” Macau’s shout jolts Vegas back to the present, where his curry has reached a gentle simmer.  Pete shuffles into the kitchen just behind Macau, smile widening when his eyes meet Vegas’s.  “This smells great,” he says appreciatively. “I think we got everything you wanted.” He places a full bag on the countertop next to where Vegas is working.  “You’re everything I want,” Vegas responds without thinking, and grins at both Pete’s automatic blush and Macau’s overexaggerated gagging.  “Stop it,” Pete mumbles. He places a chaste kiss on Vegas’s cheek before starting to put the groceries away.  “Phi, can you help me? I don’t get this homework.” Macau has managed to splay what looks like the entire contents of his backpack on the kitchen table in the seconds Vegas was looking away.  “In a minute, this is nearly done.”  “Do you want these washed?” Pete asks, gesturing to some fresh herbs.  “I’ll do it, you sit down.” He removes his ring and rolls his sleeves up, running some water to rinse the herbs. “Maybe you can help Macau.” “With English?” Both Pete and Macau say incredulously. Vegas laughs at the offended look on Pete’s face as they begin to bicker good naturedly, leaving Vegas to return to his cooking.  It’s not until much later, when dinner has been eaten and the dishes are being collected up, that Vegas realises he never put the ring back on. 

ending at the ending <3 this has been such a fun little anniversary project, it felt right to once again leave off with my favourite boys living their best post-canon life
