The eighth stage of the Dakar 2022 was one of the longest, with more than 5 hours of special. Today they competitors had to face a 394km special but they had to add another 434km of liaison, of which almost 70km of track and sailing on course. It is the second longest stage in terms of time on the bike and one of the most complicated for the sum of 100km on dunes.

The second half of the Dakar 2022 began with a highlight, a 400km stage of special (although approximately 70km neutralized in asphalt area). The Dakar Rua has left the Saudi capital behind and has moved towards Al Dawadimi, in the south. A stage that was expected to be long and tough.

Tech3 KTM Factory Racing’s Danilo Petrucci has won stage five of the Dakar Rally. Putting in a fast but measured performance, the former MotoGP™ star impressed once again by posting the fastest time on the 341-kilometer special. In what has been a race of huge highs and lows for Danilo Petrucci, the Italian has proven his offroad credentials in no uncertain terms today, winning stage five of the 2022 Dakar in what is his first ever rally raid competition. Completing yesterday’s stage four as third fastest, Danilo was penalized 10 minutes for speeding, and was relegated to 15th.

However, setting off with an advantageous start position into today’s special, and focusing on improving his roadbook skills, the MotoGP race winner was able to steadily move up through the field to ultimately take the win.

Skyler Howes crashed on the day’s special. The Husqvarna rider hit his head hard and does not remember anything about his fall, but nevertheless managed to make it to the finishing line. He started feeling unwell immediately after arriving and with ankle and shoulder injuries as well, Howes was taken to hospital by the organization’s teams to undergo further examinations. In any event, the American will have to skip the rest of the 44th edition of the Dakar. It is a big blow for Howes, who finished fifth last year and was in eighth place at the beginning of the day’s stage, as well as being the best place Husqvarna rider.

In its third outing in Saudi Arabia, the Dakar continues to explore new landscapes with an even more substantial presence of sand in the specials. Whether on the tracks or surfing vast chains of dunes, the riders, drivers and crews will go head to head on all sorts of sandy terrain, knowing that the nuances of navigation in Saudi Arabia, where competitors have to avoid losing their bearings in a hodgepodge of tracks, are a real game-changer in the battle for the top honors.

Walcher Racing-Team Germany. o-tone social media: "The 4th stage of @dakarrally 2022 is done. It was the longest and so far also the most challenging, especially in the first half there were many opportunities to completely destroy the car. Fortunately, we didn't notice any of them and, although at night, we reached the finish in 47th place without any problems."

We have a tremendous amount of respect for anybody who chooses to put their body and sanity on the line to conquer thousands of miles in some of the world’s most rugged terrains.
