There's only so much Earth we can do this to: commentary on the war on abundance
The butt of the joke, a threat, a matter-of-fact, a reminder...The phrase "It can all be traced back to capitalism" has served many a context with the bottom-line truth of the mess we've dug ourselves into.
The seek-and-destory methods of the vacuous and incompassionate have plowed through abundant nations but there are only so many people we can do this to. What has been announced as a guarded and strong nation is turning its explosive weaponary into an exponential splurge of illness onto its own citizens. The entertainment is losing its enclosure. Both in the Palisades fires and erosion of darkening Hollywood. Success is awarded in distraction or destruction. The engineers are high paid to, in assembly-line fashion, contribute to legos of the greater war machine. The business man and the pipeline. All spilling into the payroll of the doctor, scholarly spanning in all fields, who will mop up the remains of all casualities, in writing and surgery. Documenting or discarding. While the artist is high paid to tell you your emotions are on the screens, stereos, and stages but sometimes (rarely) joining you on the front lines. Telling the fan 'to read between the lines', and find their supposed meaning and resistence in code, rather than standing in uncompromised, concrete solidarity. Not just a profitable concept of the everyday battles of oppression.
There are fascinating moments that leave me head-tilted and wide-eyed, wondering how emotional the weather has been. Like a human in states of regression and agony. The sister that stands soldier to shoulder with the marginalized, equals under the regime. It will defeat us before we defeat it. There is only so much Earth we can do this to. Self-immolation of the exploited tree and veteran alike.
While people debate celebrities’ deservingness of the poor man’s empathy online (same shit different day), lands of Los Angeles are catching fire. It’s a ‘punishment of Hollywood’s elite’, it’s an ‘arsonic terrorist attack’, it’s…it’s…” Whatever it is, one thing remains true, we will never be able to settle with what lies ahead of us. Lana Del Ray is not a clairvoyant for picturing LA wildfires in the shadowing landscape of the NFR album cover. It is not the result of a dated sci-fi author’s ability to quantum jump to the future for their precisely prophetic novel published in the 80’s. This is the system at work as per usual. This is the seen-before, fully realized truth. The books, the films, as eeriely accurate as they are, are simply the synthesized outcome of pattern recogntion. You think you’ve seen this film before, because you have, because you live it.
But the real culture, art, beauty and sensuality lies in resistence. I've often pondered what makes substance. What is the aligned path? It is resistence. Spirituality, abundance, decolonization. What is love if not an open-invitation? To exist beyond limitation and binary. Existing in the compassion of the curious and liminal. We have to want more for ourselves than being the audience of a commercial (Good morning, oh and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!). Read the books, share the knowledge, give an extra bowl, redistribute your dollars and remember you are the sibling of the Earth, not the conqueror. Love is the greatest resistence. There's only so much love to gift (that keeps on giving).
