Salvaging Food After a Catastrophic Event, What Action Should Be Taken? Use It, Uh No
Most natural disasters cause an interruption of our utilities, when a storm is moving in I begin to gather flashlights and batteries in anticipation of the situation to deteriorate. With the loss of utilities we also lose our refrigerators, cooking abilities, water supply and lighting. In the event of an evacuation situation when we are allowed to return to our homes there are many issues to deal with. Depending on the damage that our dwellings sustain that will also determine the ground rules for returning, if your house is "red tagged" there are major repairs to be made before re-entry. But what if you are allowed to return while the utilities are off, looking as if this situation will last for days or even maybe weeks. The first tasks we must take on is securing the food we have in the Pantry, refrigerator and home freezer. Water will have to be dealt with as well.
There are foods that have a natural long shelf life, honey, oatmeal, cereals and dehydrated foods are among them. There are also foods that will store as long as they are kept in 40 degree F temperatures. There are some assumptions we should make.1) In the event of a flood your water is contaminated, only drink water from a sealed known source such as the cases of water available you have purchased. If you have a water well it must be assumed your water is "non-potable" tainted, have your well checked by a lab before you use it.

Survival Gear: What You Should Have For Survival In Emergencies
It is a wise decision to be prepared in case of possible emergencies. Whether it be planning in case of a natural disaster, going on a camping trip or other outdoor activities, having survival gear is essential. You may have to manage on your own for many hours or even days before help arrives.Having survival gear will eliminate the need of trying to find things at the last minute. When there are warnings of things like hurricanes or blizzards, store shelves often empty quickly. If you are traveling by car, or planning on being outdoors, having survival gear can get your through critical time. The first thing you should prepare for are food and water. Tap water may not be safe to drink, but water purification tablets will destroy bacteria and viruses, yet they are odorless and tasteless. Bottled water should also be on hand, in case you don't have running water. At least one gallon per day for each person will be necessary. Such things a protein food bars, dried fruit and nuts are easy to pack and take with you on outdoor trips or if you are planning a long commute. How much survival food you store will depend on personal circumstances and preferences. However, you should plan to store at least a week's supply at a minimum. Having enough food to last at least a month would give you peace of mind in case it should be necessary. Having such things as powdered milk, pastas and non perishable food items can be safely stored for quite some time. For long-term food storage, freeze-dried foods can have a shelf life of twenty or more years. These include such things as stews, pastas, vegetables and much more. Meals are available for breakfast, lunch and dinner.Since you could be without electricity for days in case of natural disaster, a flashlight and batteries are essential. A generator can provide back up power. Portable ones are available as well as larger standby units that will give you power to your entire home.Your survival gear should contain a first aid kit. You can make your own but a basic kit that will have all the essentials is inexpensive to buy.A battery or solar-powered radio can keep you up to date on local weather conditions and news. Some radios have other uses including charging your cell phone or an SOS emergency light so they can be even more versatile. It is important to plan for emergencies by having survival gear for your home, as well as your car. You can buy fully complete survival kits or make up your own. Depending where you live, you may want to have a kit in your car at all times. If you live in an earthquake area, you know they happen without warning, and you could be traveling at the time. Even a few basic things like water, a solar blanket, and energy bars in your car is a good plan to be prepared. A survival kit should always be taken when you are going on road trips, particularly away from a city or in sparsely populated areas, as well as camping and other outdoor activities.

When I think of freedom. I flashback - to the last day of school, the bell rang and I was released for a whole summer.
The first day or two, I'd sleep in. Enjoy ice cream in the middle of the day. Tune into daytime television, and sometimes even take a nap in the middle of the day. But, eventually I had to face the reality that I still had to do my chores and go to my summer job.
When I finally finished school I was truly free from the deadlines of semesters and grades. Then a new life emerged where I faced the long term reality of what I would do with my freedom. Would I invest in slack time, or use my freedom to become responsible. I was free, but for what purpose.
In Galatians chapter 5:13, Paul writes to a church struggling to understand true freedom. Some false teachers promised that freedom was found in strict religious requirements. But, Paul argued that freedom comes by God's grace alone.
Paul's teachings on grace came with a warning. He wrote, you my brothers and sisters were called to be free, but do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh, rather serve one another humbly in love.
Jesus died on the across to provide full freedom and forgiveness from our mistakes, from our sins and we have choice regarding just what we'll do with such freedom. Would we take advantage of God's grace and do whatever we want. Or will we take advantage of God's grace by serving others in humility and love.
Experiencing the freedom we have in Jesus, influences what we do with it. Instead of indulging in the easy feel good. Let's invest our freedom in loving God, and loving others.
God bless you,
