In my photoshoot I wanted to make everything look nostalgic and roamntic but with a twisted undertone which is why I chose to use a manequin in the photoshoot. I wanted to show how women in the 1920s were more seen as objects rather than people.
I shot most of it on polaroid film because it made it look more nostalgic and the low key lighting that appears in polaroid film really added to the dark yet nostalgic atmosphere I was going for.
The remaining were shot on a digital camera mainly so I had a bit of varitey for when I was editing them but also for technical reasons because I wan't sure if the polaroids would work as well as they did so I wanted a sort of backup set of photos.

I edited this one in a similar style but changed the colouring to better match the more common sepia tone found in the 1920s. The monochrome style i have used for the last couple photos was still used in the 1920s but this sepia style was a lot more common.

These are screenshots from Lightroom of one of the photos i have edited
The original:

The finished edited version:

I tweaked the lighting to put more focus on the subjects by making them glow more. I also added a vignette and adjusted the midpoint to accomplish the same thing, i also did it to give it a frame of sorts so it looks like a photo that would be hung up in a house in the 1920s
Example:

I changed it into black and white because obviously colour photography wasn’t very common in the 1920s and typically when you imagine the 1920s you imagine black and white photography from the time.

Here are some of the unedited photos from my photoshoot. I’m going to edit them to give them more of a vintage, 1920s feel, so giving them less quality by adding things like grain and roughness, and I want to make them look more romantic by adding details like vignette.

this is some of the previous polaroids I have taken. They’re not related to the 1920s theme necessarily but still have the nostalgic aesthetic that I like

This is a mind map i have been putting together filled with ideas on what I want to do with the project. It’s has inspirations in there as well.

Some standouts are the art deco, silent film stars and the fashion.
Art deco would mean i just have to take photos of buildings. Would link with nostalgia because those buildings are still here today and are a symbol of a time gone by.
Silent film stars would fit in with my Film Studies (Buster Keaton) and I think the silent film stars portraits on polaroid sounds really cool and would have a cool aesthetic.
The fashion is basic but would still work. Honestly not much to say on it.
I will have a think on what I can do. Might re-think the whole project honestly.

These are some of my inspirations from ‘The Polaroid Book’. They all have a nostalgic feel to them that I personally credit to the fact it was taken on instant film. Nostalgia is one of the main things I want to capture in my project.

For my project I want to use Polaroids, which gives a nostalgic look to photos, and the 1920s, a nostalgic era of human history even for people who never lived then. It is generally glorified for things like the jazz era and the romance that comes with that. I want to mix the 1990s kind of nostalgia and the 1920s kind of nostalgia into this one project.
One of my main inspirations also is the caretaker’s Everywhere at the End of Time because of his use of older music to make something seem nostalgic even though most the people viewing it and feeling nostalgic never lived in the time being represented. Another aspect of everywhere at the end of time is it uses that nostalgia to show the degradation of a dementia patients brain and how those nostalgic memories fade away. I want to attempt to show through Polaroids the fading memories of the 1920s and maybe how they have been tainted by nostalgia and the reality of what those times were like have been lost. I want to show this with how Polaroids can look faded after being taken or can fade over time, like a fading memory. I could do this by playing around with lighting and exposure of the photo. There is also a double exposure feature on my camera which overlays 2 photos on top of each other. I have quite a few ideas but no clear idea of how I’m going to properly execute them and with Polaroid film being expensive I need to be careful how I use it so there will be a lot of digital photography done with my DSLR before I start with Polaroids (although one thing I like about Polaroids is the imperfections that come from them)
I want to incorporate 1920s era jazz into my project but this will most likely be done with the installation where I’ll have a playlist of music playing on loop. Tumblr also lets me link music through soundcloud and Spotify so i will link music that I like and had inspired me every time I make a post
I made a Pinterest board to showcase my inspirations and the type of vibe I’m going for with this project which can be found below:
