Caymus vs Caymus | A wine that needs no introduction, we decided to try a side-by-side comparison of ’17 vs ’19. Out of the bottle, the 2017 greeted us with the smell of bright, overly ripe fruit. When tasting, we were surprised to find the ripeness dimished, leaving behind the classic Caymus flavor of dark stone fruit coupled with mocha, baking spices and excellent tannins. The 2019 was disappointing out of the bottle, with muted aroma and flavor. The initial sips were un-remarkable with a bit of alcohol noticeable. We gave the ’19 time to decant over the course of the evening and it opened nicely and began to drink very similar to the 2017.
