Welcome to the Black Girl Magic Zine!

What is ‘Black Girl Magic’?

The obvious connotation aside, ‘Black Girl Magic’ is a collection of art, fics, and videos compiled into a zine to increase representation of some of our favorite black, female characters from the Arrowverse. The zine will be for sale through storenvy.com with 100% of the profits going to two wonderful charities: theokraproject.com and http://ffbww.org. The only costs that reduce the gross profits will be charges from vendors to process sales.

Who is represented in ‘Black Girl Magic’?

The characters represented in either fic, video, or art pieces are all of the wonderful black, female characters from the Arrowverse that you know.

Who is contributing to ‘Black Girl Magic’?

The zine is a compilation of the work of various writers, artists, and videographers coming together for a worthy cause. Some you may already follow, while the work of some may be new to you. You can contribute to this project by purchasing a zine to show these actresses how much they’re loved. OIt is also to show DC Comics and The CW how much we want to see more of these characters. 

Why does this project exist?

It’s no secret that systemic racism pervades most, if not all, countries. If you watch the news, you’ll be inundated with information about protests organized in reaction to the latest racist attack. The negative stereotyping of black people in the media has created a schema that directly relates to violence against the Black Community. This project aims to combat that negative messaging and show powerful, loving black women in a more positive and therefore realistic light. This also provides role models for black girls and young adults (or people of any age).

When can I purchase a copy of the zine?

The zine will be available through storenvy.com with an expected release date of 10/15/2020. The link will be posted here on Tumblr. Please follow to get future announcements about the zine.

actually you will not enjoy hearing this but you literally have to abandon your self deprecating humor. besides the fact that it can drive people away you literally are only hurting yourself by constantly making jokes that further cement the idea in your head that you are not good enough. I do not care that you think its a good coping mechanism it is absolutely not and you need to start challenging negative thoughts instead of feeding into them.

Super Friends:  Alex Danvers

To me Alex Danvers is the emotional heart of the show.  As the character who has come the farthest, both as a woman and a hero, I’ll be spending some time on her.

It helps that the software I use has a lot of sci-fi assets, which ties in nicely with Supergirl which has always been science fiction orientated.  Getting a likeness of Chyler Leigh was another matter:  Katie/Lena was achieved pretty quickly- I did her first as a vampire then from that crafted a human version.  The base for Mel/Kara was also arrived at fair quickly but the refinements were arrived at over a period of time.

Alex was another matter: I had gone through at least 6 iterations before putting her on hold.  With the benefit of hindsight I think it’s because expressions really transform her cute elfin features resulting in different looks.  Even doing a toonified version proved to be a challenge but more on that in later posts.

While I had initially thought of a DEO scene for her first render, the set which would have been perfect was not on sale.  Casting around for inspiration I remembered Jim Steranko’s iconic cover of Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. # 4,  which has since been updated and re-created by other artists.

The first version is is closer to Steranko’s original making use of halftone figures and op-art backgrounds. The second version keeps the op-art backgrounds while modernizing the foreground elements.

The DEO logo is from spoofnerd on Deviantart.  If you do decide to download and use it, please send the artist some love.

The line comes from the S1E10 episode “Childish Things”:

A little girl in my 4th grade class came up to me after recess and said, “I got married at recess!” and I said “Oh? I didn’t know anyone was ordained under the age of twelve.” and she asked me what ordained meant and I explained and then she said “Oh, well, no, my wife and I were married by the slide, but we’ll be happy together anyway.”

So apparently on school playgrounds, slides are already legalizing same-sex marriage.

Man is asked if he knows that his girlfriend is transgender. His passionate answer goes viral.

Jade Mcfarlane and her boyfriend, Tyler, responded to a commenter over at tiktok who suggested Mcfarlene’s boyfriend would have left Jade if he knew she was trans.

Jade decided to post Tyler’s wonderful response to the transphobic comments.

Tyler says:

“First off, I want to say trans women are real women. They’re completely valid in their femininity. And the fact that people think that just because someone’s trans and I found out — or anyone found out that their significant other is trans — that [this] would take away or diminish the love they have for them, [it’s] completely disgusting to me.”
