ROLL THE TAPES
For my final project, I decided to take classic movie tropes and find them in real life. From the romance to the comedy, picture-perfect moments are never too hard to find. Life imitates art as art imitates life.
In my project, I took five iconic movie scenes and moments and utilized the medium of my own photography and memories in my life in order to emit the same feelings as the stages cinema moment could. The best part about doing this project is that some of the photos I was able to capture and bring to this project are candid. This really takes the realism of movie moments happening in real life.
For every movie moment or troupe, there is a photo juxtaposed next to the actual cinema scene that is of my own work. Below the photo diptych, there is a video of the scenes from the movie to fully understand the words said and the context around the photos and the moments on screen. There is also a written explanation given of why the photo is important to me and why the pictures and grabs from the films match up so well in my mind and on paper.

TIMELINE STORY
For my Timeline Project, I decided to touch on a topic that I had personal passion for, and that had a very interesting timeline progression.
Princess Diana of Whales lived a very lavish life, but her story came out as tragic and unbecoming of a royal family member. Diana endured her royal husband having an affair with Camilla, the woman he previously left. Diana’s story is tragic, but shows the amount of strength she had in order to come out and tell her story.
I have a personal fascination with the British royal family, and Diana is an enigma that passed through the family, and it is important that she is not forgotten.

For my Storymap post, I decided to go back to the roots of my family.
My family on my father’s side is originally from Valenzano, Italy. My father comes from a great big family of women. Seven sisters and husbands raised him and created his life in Valenzano, Italy until he was ten years old. The food was better and made more with love, the culture was rich, and the town was friendly.
This map takes the audience through the journey of my father moving from Italy to the U.S. and where he decided to plant roots, but not without remembering where he came from. Today, I take my culture and my roots and celebrate them, even though it might be very far away.

The Greatest Disservice of Journalists to the American Populace
The fact that smoking causes major illnesses and kills roughly half of its users hasn't persuaded the world's 1.1 billion smokers to quit, nor has it persuaded governments to enact outright smoking bans. Denial, false information, the deliberate weakening of true data by portraying it as "junk science" in order to obfuscate public health policy, concocted information, media framing distortion, and secretive illicit trading have all been documented in the tobacco industry's and its supporters' decades-long battle to maintain their profitable but deadly business.
The purpose of this comparison is to emphasize a few points: first, climate change will kill us. Two, large businesses profit from natural disasters. Three, media firms don't perform enough accountability journalism or sound the alarm loudly enough. When you add it all up, the lack of responsible, scientific media will ultimately lead to the demise of civilization.
A Pew Research survey found that nearly a third of Americans are scientifically ignorant. The majority of people can correctly respond to questions on antibiotic use or the idea of "incubation time." Certain concepts, on the other hand, are more difficult to grasp; for example, fewer Americans understand the difference between a hypothesis and the importance of bases in antacids.
For my final project, I elaborate on the greatest disservice journalists have done to the American public: undermine scientific news.

The history of human communication
For my final project, I wanted to make it about communication in our history. What were the innovative ways humans communicated with each other? I wanted to show the progression in our communication over time and how it was formed into a simpler and shorter way to get the point across.

Taiwan Trip 2019
For my storymap project I document my travels across Taipai, Taiwan. I was blown away by the beauty of the landscape, the accessibility for tourists, and the amazing food! The best food I had was a 25 cent dumpling bun. One bite leads to an explosion of juice in handhold package. Interestingly enough Buzzfeed's Worth It covered the chain in 10 million hit video a few months later! The trip with flight, hotel, excessive food, and souvenirs totaled to sub $1000 for a 10-day stay. For anyone who wants an affordable Asian destination, Taiwan is the way to go! - Mingson Lau

File Organization 101
I wanted to create a blog-like guide on how to properly organize, save, and backup multimedia files following the development of my personal digital organization. There are a multitude of storage devices, files systems, and cloud storage options for consumers, but it can get very confusing. It can be a hassle to bumble through all of that so I want to help people create more efficient workflows. -Mingson Lau

Tackling Tourism
For my honors contract, I did a Medium article about how Hawai’i has handled the COVID-19 Pandemic. For multimedia elements, I took photos around the Hilton Hawaiian Resort Hotel in Honolulu, HI to show how tourism is around the area. In addition, I added a few tweets to give further context to the story, and created my own graph showing the 7 day averages for COVID-19 rates in the state. I hope you enjoy reading it! - Kiersten Moss

For my storymap project, I decided to inform the general public on the best sandwiches that the Valley has to offer (in my opinion.) If you have been looking to find your new favorite lunch stop, look no further than this interactive slideshow of my favorite restaurants.

My Brothers
I have brothers of blood, brothers of war and brothers of life. We laugh, we debate, we support. There is no weakness in these bonds. As we grow and migrate into our own lives, we alway remember there’s a den for us to come to when we need a break. No words will be spoken, no actions to be taken, whats understood doesn’t need to be said. Sleep, laugh, eat and go back into woods with comfort that the den will always be there and your brothers will always be there.

Going Up
The topic for my Visual Story was “Up.” My first though was of the buildings in Downtown Phoenix. When I was thinking of the subject I noticed my eyes followed an imaginary line from the ground and up the buildings before looking at the sun. Since I wanted to develop a story, I thought it would be cool to introduce a character and follow their journey up. I photoshopped and sequeneced the photos to make it look like the eyes were climbing up. At the end I also wanted to include some shots of the up-ed sun looking down at another pair of eyes interested in making the journey up. I added some dream-generated images to lighten up the vibe and bring some color into the cloud covered sky. “Creative Minds” by Bensound was the perfect musical fit. - Mingson Lau

My name Mingson
Hello, my name is Mingson Lau and I am a journalism student at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism. I am a multimedia reporter with experience in video, photo, writing, and editing. Born in Las Vegas, Nevada, I am of Chinese and Vietnamese descent. I have spent years working in restaurants preparing sushi and out on the field reporting stories.
I have the foolhardy goal of not having concrete goals. Yes, there are some things I would like to do career-wise. I want to work for National Geographic and PBS, travel the world, and establish a livelihood based on my abilities and knowledge — without the dependency of a job. But, I want to have the freedom to explore to my heart's content and develop the ability to share what I find in a compelling way. -Mingson Lau
