The sound of the wind momentarily distracting me as I looked down from my balcony. The evening sky was a brilliant shade of vermillion and violet as the sun went down. The moon, on the first phase of waning, was a beautiful shade of ivory that just about peaked out from the clouds. I sighed; I don't know when 'it' would be starting, if even. I hope it's not tonight; I don't think I'm ready or ever will be. The chaos that would ensue sounds petrifying. The news was vague and so were the following amber alerts. I guess one perk about living on the outskirts of town is that nothing ever really happens. The evening air stilled, and I heard a soft crunch in the leaves nearby.
My nearest neighbor was a mile away, town was 3 miles in the other direction. Animals walk across my property all the time; the news and the amber alerts are just putting me on edge.
snap
A branch this time broke. A rush of cold washed over me, it's just an animal I hear myself saying. The last remaining rays of the sun washed over the warm tones of red, orange and brown leaves decaying. When I heard more crunching in the woods towards the right, I turned to face what was making the noise.
A person was standing there, looking back at me. They didn't look right though, something seemed off about them. I couldn't tell what was off before it suddenly screamed and ran towards my front door. I can't recall if I locked the door or not, but I ran inside, hoping, praying even that I could find something to defend myself with. I heard my front door slam open, then frantic running up my stairs, the 'thing' slamming into walls as the staircase turned.
My throat tightened with fear, adrenaline rushing through me my head was spinning. I grabbed a pillow off of my bed and ran back to my balcony. I closed the door and tried to hop onto my railing in an attempt to get to my roof before the thing got into my room. I heard more screaming from the woods. It sounded inhumane in every sense.
The balcony door slammed open.
I saw soft green eyes stare at me, and before I could fully process what was happening, I was falling and hit the ground roughly. I heard what could only be described as a thunder of footsteps before the thing that broke in was on top of me staring at me, saliva falling from once human lips.
My breath hitched as I realized it would be my last before I became like them.
